Good News: Unity has been cleaned up to the point where my previous
code now works as intended. Evolution runs in the background with no

Geoff, you've done great work here! I really like the idea of squashing
this bug and your enthusiasm for doing it. But I see two blockers to
merging it as-is:
1) As Vish says though, we need to get some sort of buy-in from Neil or
Matthew on the design side.
2) I don't actually see a patch or m
For me, what's really important is that Evolution is launched
automatically on startup, like gwibber and empathy, and that "closing"
it keeps it alive so that you can still get mail notification. I doubt
Unity can do all that without a patched indicator-applet, but I could be
wrong.

That could certainly be fixed. The bigger issue is that in unity when
you "minimize" evolution it minimizes to the launcher icon. (Think Mac

Hey, got a couple of emails about this, so I thought I would update on
the bug page. There actually haven't been any bugs reported on the
project page and I haven't had or heard of any problems with the patched
code. So I would say that the modified version of evolution-indicator
is more or less

(and hopefully any other "extra" windows) normally now.
As for the special flag, if only it were that simple. The evolution
devs are pretty adamant about not adding a "windowless" mode to
evolution so there is no such flag. R

Thanks for the feedback! I've updated the repository with some bug
fixes. Evolution should reappear on the taskbar and in the pager after

Well, good news everyone. Turns out there were some significant
upgrades to evolution from lucid to maverick. Because of that I've been
able to implement all of the features I had working in lucid *entirely*
within the evolution-indicator package without any sort of hackery.

I've uploaded the latest evolution to my ppa with the necessary signal
emit changes, so evolution shouldn't need to be manually installed now.
(At least until its updated again.)
Also, just for kicks, I've implemented the suggestion about running at
startup and hiding when evolu

There is a temporary way around until they fix this..
Install cGmail and use it.
And in its preferences>Advanced>Commands>Exec this command on new mails, enter
"evolution --online" without the quotes..
Check the options to start application on ubuntu startup. It will start
and checks when you go

I may be confused as to what "unity" we are talking about. I thought
maybe I couldn't reproduce your problem because I installed unity on an
existing gnome installation so I tried a usbboot of ubuntu netbook
edition. However, I was unable to reproduce your problem there either.

That is a strange bug. For some reason gtk_widget_hide is messing with
the dimensions of the gtk_paned widget used to divide evolution into the
accounts list and everything else. I also end up with the same behavior
if I maximize evolution, resize the accounts list, and then unmaximize

To avoid conflicts with the ubuntu main repository, avoid using the same
version number (as you did with evolution package) and also avoid
increasing the ubuntu version number (as you did with evolution-

the one in my ppa. This package has priority over mine when you install
via apt-get.

I hate to say it but after testing this package for a few weeks I'm
afraid its not going to work as is. The problem is that because of my
tomfoolery with the "dont quit" flag, evolution doesn't quit cleanly on

Evolution recently received a truckload of code changes in preparation
for Gnome 3.0 and all deprecations it will introduce

True enough. I also think that the plugin api was designed more for
plugins which work within evolution. This is _way_ outside the scope of
this bug, but a lot of these problems could be fixed by adding something
like a dbus interface to evolution. Something that would allow other
programs, like

instance.
This limits a lot what can be improved in the indicator plugin in terms
of usability. For example, right now there is one item for each account,
but all items do essentially the same thing which is opening the
Evolu
Concious: I noticed this as well. To my knowledge the plugin api
doesn't allow you to focus an already open window. Taking a look at the
original evolution-indicator code I see that the contacts menu item
works by using g_spawn to call "evolution -c contacts" which will,
necessarily, start a new
Working great for me too, testing in Lucid.
The only issue I'm seeing is that the new "Contacts" option in the
messaging menu launches another instance of Evolution. A think a better
behavior would be to unhide the current instance and focus on the
contacts view. But I'm not even sure the plugin A

I just tried to install the updates in a cdboot of Lucid and it seemed

the ppa apparently dont work gives this when I try to update evolution (with
doing sudo apt-get upgrade evolution and related packages are kept back).
