1. Create a gconf-defaults file under "/usr/share/gconf/defaults/"
2. Add 2 keys:
/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/default "/usr/bin/metacity"
/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/current to "/usr/bin/metacity"
3. run "update-gconf-defaults"

Enclosed are some debug and logs for last test run.
logs/Xorg.0.log is new X server running after getting login screen
logs/Xorg.0.log.old is X server running at time of operator getting login
screen after attempting resolution change. I am suspecting X crashed. I have
verified process id chan
Was planning to provide Xorg.0.log file but found it may be limited use because
X server crashes when compiz is running. this is why the operator will see
the login screen as a new X server process is started. Of course this causes a
new log file to be created. Thus to read the xorg log, it

We have confirmed that symptoms in step 1 through 5 of the original post occur
on two different machines.
Have also confirmed steps 6 and 7 occur on one of the machines.
These only occur when Visual Effects are enabled via "Appearance Preferences"
utilitly.
Visual Effects using Normal or Extra c
This issue is very similar to a few others reported before and is not
limited to Intel chip sets. Also affects ATI and Nvidia.
The symptoms seem to point to compviz conflicting with the "Display
Settings" utility.

I'd look for a more specific driver. That should solve the issue; the
ALSA driver can't handle what you're doing. I could be wrong, but it's
worth a try.
