One final comment - a work-around here for me is to remove the gstreamer
codecs from the bad set and install vlc. Then set vlc as the default
player.
I have also attached the new xsession-errors in case it will provide
extra info

OK back again - I did a fresh install in the hopes of narrowing down
what is causing the problem.
I also documented exactly what packages were installed after the
installation, tested 3 different mpegs each time something was
installed, both before and after a boo - see attachedt.

I am just wondering if this might be related to app-armor - thinking
that this "might" be a result of my using the app-armor profiles (I used
what came from synaptic, without fiddling there). Any thoughts ?
Also would there be any other tests or logfiles I could process/upload

I was just wondering if app-armor would have any effect - I did have
this installed in the last install... so I added the profiles from
synaptic and rebooted - at that point I started getting the problem with

OK, I opted to wipe Ubuntu and re-install (thank goodness for
aptoncd...)
I did all updates, installed the nvidia 173 driver and then added the
gstreamer ugly. I then grabbed the mpeg from my windows partition,
