I have the same problem, 90% of ocasions when I press the
GnomeMenu->System->Quit, the system continues to work, but doesnt respond to
mouse clicks, or
keyboard. Only thing that I can do, is to press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, and then
Shutdown from GDM menu.

I can restart Gnome with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, but Ctr-Alt-Delete doesn't
work.
When I tried sudo shutdown, the X server recovery console came up,
giving me the option to repair X. I am running the Nvidia proprietary
driver with my 7800GS card. If I try to repair X from the recovery
console, it rest
Can you try shutting down from the terminal with the command "sudo
shutdown" and see if that works?
Attaching the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log will also help.

the beta version for a few weeks(no problems, apart from Firefox, and my
Emu 0404 sound card still doesn't work).
