Thanks for popping up Olivier, if, once started, you could give me an

Daniel asked me to respond to this issue as lead developer for Bluefish.
The reason for this user interface design choice is that the text area
is the most important area for bluefish. Since bluefish has multiple
toolbars, tabs etc. these all reduce the size available for the text
area. Using both
I'm going to do some more research on this.
Which of the following is the desired upstream behavior?
1. To always use "icons only"
2. To make "icons only" the *default* everywhere (even in GNOME with the
system setting set to something else)
3. To make "icons only" the *default* in al

Why not? Its their application and they wanted it to behave like this.
Are they not compliant with GTK style guidelines or any other applicable
specification?

@Richard Laager:
You expect that a system setting, that is clearly a GNOME setting, has
an effetc on non-GNOME applications? So following this argument, KDE
applications also have to respect this setting. I'm sorry, but it
doesn't make sense to me.
BTW: You compare supporting *GTK* themes with su

They shouldn't override their toolkit's default settings without a good
reason. Is there any reason they should in this case "(beside the fact
that it is possible)"?

The answer from upstream is quite clear:
"I won't do"
Any argument why they should (beside the fact that it is possible)?
Do you think we should patch all GTK applications in universe to make them
respect the Gnome settings, even when they have been clearly not been designed
this way?
I use blu
I don't really care about GTK vs. GNOME vs. whatever here. This bug is
for Ubuntu, not the upstream app. The setting is in System ->
Preferences -> Appearance. That implies it affects the appearance of
everything on the system.
I'm well aware of the "This is a GTK+ app, not a GNOME app." argument.
And why should a *GTK*-based application "respect" a *GNOME" feature?
Can you pint me to your argument? GTK is not GNOME. You are free to port
bluefish toolbars to optionally use GNOME features. I won't do.

bluefish doesn't honor the GNOME toolbar settings.

I've filed a bug on Ubuntu. Things in Ubuntu should be consistent. It
should be possible for a non-GNOME app using GTK+ to honor this setting.

Of course. Bluefish is an independent application (that just uses some
GNOME libraries). Changing the GNOME setting does not have any effect on
Bluefish, because it does not contain this functionality. And to my
knowledge, nobody ever requested to show icons, text or both (I guess,
that's waht you
