This is happening on Hardy. It's very persistent on a AMD-64 X2 with
ATI graphics and Kubuntu (KDE 3.x):

i still get the issue...
It is strange that, leaving KDE, there's everytime a dark screen, then some
seconds pass (that is not normal i think), and there i get 2 possibilities :
normal shutdown (or deconnexion, or X-restart) or dark screen with grey squares.

Do you have an Intel graphics card? I am experiencing the same problems
on Dell Inspiron 6400 with Kubuntu Feisty and I think it has to do with
the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver. For more info take a look at this:

This seems to be a general problem, as it also affects Gnome version.
I've got it on one of my laptops, but not the other. The inconsistency
is likely part of the reason a fix is slow in coming. On gnome version
nosplash did not fix the shutdown.

i hope this will be fixed in the next release
the main site says that kubuntu is designed for everyone as a replacement os
for your desktop pc
but a new guy or one that doesn't know much about computers not being able to
shut down the computer (which im sure you'll all agree is a must)

Will there be a fix released for Kubuntu Feisty Fawn soon ? I am able to
work around it by editing menu.lst however a fix would be greatly
appreciated.

With my P4P800 I could not shut down in Edgy or Fiesty (would hang at the end).
It turns out that an option for apm had been disabled. You'll need to
re-enable it with the following:

other packges should be up/downgraded as well. Doing that resulted again
in Packages that should be up-downgraded.
When i installed 7.04 for the first time i upgraded the whole system.

Goodevening,
Because the KDM package didn't work for me right now i removed "splash"
from the " /boot/grub/menu.lst" and did a updat-grub.
This works fine but only one time . The next time i logged in a noticed
that the grub/menu.lst had restored itself.

When I shutdown or restart from KDE menu ,can occurs (launching a coin):
HEADS- blank screen, (shutting down log on text term, CRTL+ALT+F1),
KUBUNTU splash with progress bar appears for 0.2 secs and works (restart
or shutdown). After that, monitor turns off (when shutting down). All

from within a KDE session does not (freezing on Kubuntu splash screen).
I can also confirm that removing usplash (or probably disabling it) is

Siemens Amilo Pi1505 notebook, with Feisty, and also in a computer with

If I log out, and choose Shutdown from the kdm menu, it works well, but

process selected kdm as the desktop manager. I had no problems with Edgy

what you want as your default dm, so choose kdm. I remember I installed
that package as well on my fresh Dell Inspiron system and I added the
changes above. After that combined action, the problems were solved for

I can confirm this on Kubuntu 7.04. My guess is that there might be some
processes blocking the shutdown: If I have a fresh login, KDE shutdown
mostly works. If I enter "sudo shutdown now" into the terminal the PC
shuts down instantly. Maybe the KDE shutdown buttons need to be a little
more aggress

I have to add that also selecting "end session / log off user" from kde does
not work.
So the problem occurs when I try to exit the X session in the normal manner,
from the graphical environment.
I never have a problem with aborting the X-session using CTRL-ALT-BKSPC, it
