The alternate packages don't seem to make a difference. Restarting from KDM on my Thinkpad results in text, while restarting from KDE results in a blank or corrupted screen that changes to the proper splash screen right at the end. On a desktop with an Intel 810 graphics chipset, it generally works with KDM, fails with KDE. On my desktop (nvidia geforce 7600), it often locks up completely, but it will sometimes function properly. It seems to work more often in Gutsy.
