I face similar problem of shutdown not completing. My original install is Edgy upgraded to Feisty. Then I installed kubuntu-desktop and in the process selected kdm as the desktop manager. I had no problems with Edgy or in Feisty while using gdm. After installing kubuntu-desktop, the problem started while shutting down.
When I click on the shutdown button from the panel, the desktop closes and I often get a blank dark screen. This occurs 80% of the time I shutdown. Sometimes, I get a pale white screen or some colors moving on th screen like a screen saver instead of the blank screen. But, the processor LED glows for sometime and hangs down. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL restarts the system, while pressing the power button shuts down. And in the remaining 20% of the shutdowns, I do not get a complete kubuntu-usplash during shutdown, it appears only for the last 10% or so before the system powers off. I have tried changing the usplash from kubuntu to ubuntu, but still the problem continues.
