This morning things were so bad that I decided to switch monitors.
I unplugged the VGA connectors from both monitors, and swapped them.
The "new" configuration was much better, with no turning off of the monitor.

Many times I did a usb flash drive boot for 15.10, 64 bit. Only for 15.10
was there a problem. Using dd in place of startup disk creator solved the
problem. So I can't confirm what is said on Ask Ubuntu. There however
nobody seemed to try dd.

On my laptop I tried UEFI and BIOS. In UEFI it would not give an error -
it would just ignore the usb stick and go directly into the usual
Ubuntu. I take this to mean that in UEFI it is intelligent enough to

3.19.0-22 won't display o
This morning there was a new kernel 3.19.0-25 so I updated again. The problem
still exists.
While trying to do the update I noticed that 3.19.0-20 had some problem with
aport.grub (not sure of the spelling).
Since the problem is at boot I decide to drop back to 3.19.0-18 which reported
no errors
This morning I updated to 3.19.0-23 and the problem exists on the latest kernel
as well.
The only way I can work is to drop back to 3.19.0-20

The following tar file (usb-debug.tgz) contains debugging obtained using
the instructions in the link provided above.
I used two USB enclosures with the SATA hard drive, one that "works" and the
one that exhibits the bug.
Testing was done with the last kernel installed (3.7.0-030700rc7).

The laptop on which I reported the bug is not one I can modify. Therefore I
used a different one that is running Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit.
First I verified that the problem I reported above can be recreated on this
other system. I quickly managed to confirm that it can.

Writing on a certain USB HDD causes corruption

As far as my tests went, it does not matter where in the drive I write to with
dd - it gets corrupted.
The example I gave was in order to simplify the description of what I was
seeing.
Originally, The drive had a formatted partition and when I moved it to this
USB/SATA enclosure I began experie
try being the USB to SATA controller that I think Ubuntu has
a problem with.

I would like to remove this bug. It turns out that Evince has its own
Color <--> Gray scale choice which doesn't look at the values defined in
the Printer Options. Probably when I updated from 12.04 to 12.10 the
Evince values got reset. The reason it is still working correctly on the
other computer
