Independent of the "Java is completely broken" issue, I do think the
originally stated case of "ca-certificate-java should support openjdk-8"
is still totally valid. Installing this package seems to bring in java
7 even when you already have 8 installed.
The current situation is pretty ridiculous
We're also finding that we cannot install Java 8 on Trusty anymore. One
other thing I noted is that the openjdk-8 package seems to have a
'Breaks: ' directive for older versions of ca-certificates-java,
including this version.
This is a really serious issue for us, and this is not the first time
We just ran into this bug on 14.04
How come it never got backported? This is a super serious issue, and just led
to a outage on our site :(

We rolled out a new pip package to all our systems this morning. Since
it happened to pull in a new requests library, we now are the proud
owners of approximately 50 hosts with completely broken pip installs.
Exact same problem described here.
How does a bug this serious persist in a LTS release
Debian Stable fixed this bug almost two years ago. I just ran into it
on Ubuntu again. Does anyone actually care that this OS works? :(

Additionally, attempting to bring in utopic libc to fix the bug causes
dependency resolution problems down the road. Both the trusty python3

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

I too cannot understand why this fix was refused to backport to trusty.
We just spent two man-weeks tracking down this issue in one of our

they are installing a supported version are actually silently getting an

I just stumbled on this, and if the Ubuntu team will close such obvious

The lack of a openjdk8 package makes it very difficult to install any
