I found out that I can't add a volume plugin to the panel in Hardy
unless I first remove the keybindings for the media keys in the keyboard
settings. Removing them fixes it (the plugin handles them, so there is
no loss of functionality).

works -- I guess the versions are too different now to use each other's

The trayicon plugin requires a part written in C and compiled to
trayicon.so . I can see there are no .so files in the package.
What's funny, I had to move the .so file and chnage the path in
trayicon.py to make the version downloaded from the pympd home page
work...

I tried it under xfce with metacity replacing xfwm4 -- everything works
fine, so I guess it's xfwm4 indeed.
I also tried the --compositor=off option. This makes the delay much
smaller, and almost ignorable -- but it's still there it seems (this was
