I had the same issue. I use xbacklight to solve the issue.
Add xbacklight to your startup applications with the desired brightness
setting and problem worked around.

hostname in your alpine configuration.

I installed the current Debian 2.6.18 vserver kernel and am using
Ubuntu's packages for everything else, including util-vserver.
I wanted to make a vserver, so I did this:

Please fix this. This is a major annoyance if you're using an Ubuntu
system to develop packages for Debian.
I maintain some packages in Debian as well as in a repository as part of
sysadmining, and I'm not affiliated with Ubuntu, so my debian/changelog
lines shouldn't be saying ubuntu anything. (
I can report that this persists when running amaroK on Feisty (as of
April 2, 2007).

You mentioned you're running a systemtap kernel. Do you get this
behavior with a stock Ubuntu kernel?
Also, what if you copy the binary you compiled on a FC5 system to an
Ubuntu system with an official kernel?

system I'm replacing. "svk pull" crashes svk, which means the program
is totally broken. :-(
