NICs have correct MAC address stored at production time. Therefore some
applications like macchanger (Linux) and some MoBo' BIOSes enable the
user to change without any correctness check the MAC address.

I have noticed this behavior in the Gutsy Gibbon v7.10 Kubuntu starting from
the on-line updates of the last two weeks too.
As Gutsy Gibbon worked with no problems before that time I suppose the bug has
to be searched in that period's patches.

I confirm, the problem exists on the new Hardy Heron Kubuntu v8.04b too.
This bug has to be set to *critical state* because it affects security aspects

Yes, maybe, but I wouldn't be so shure.
Who says that? How much can be considered true what is stated?
What happens to unsold computers? I don't think Windows will be uninstalled and
then installed on the new models...
What is the market? Who says how much cubes "the market"?

Point 3. of my precedent resumee has now been overridden. Freezing has been
observed in the following situations:
a. while working on KDE & Gnome
b. in a VT window under X
c. in a VT after boot without starting the Xserver (startx)
I could personally verify point c. case also, on a fresh Kubuntu
tested on various new and older PCs (5 years old hw too) without change on
behave.
