Point 3. of my precedent resumee has now been overridden. Freezing has been
observed in the following situations:
a. while working on KDE & Gnome
b. in a VT window under X
c. in a VT after boot without starting the Xserver (startx)

I could personally verify point c. case also, on a fresh Kubuntu v7.10
installation, without upgrades first and with them in a later test.

As a consequence of this observations, it seems convincing the opinion
the problem is originated by the kernel itself.

I'll ad a point to the list:

10. I've observed that hotplug isn't working cleanly on the HD
installation (but it works fine from the live CD), and freeze sometimes
happens in concomitance with plugging a new USB external resource (HD);
