I have a horrible memory, so I can't remember 5.2 (at all :) )
However, I'll bet it's version of linuxconf already had this feature in
it's PPP configuration.
Believe it or not this is the simplest case for PPP dialup!
Run linuxconf, and go to
Networking->Client Tasks->PPP/SLIP/PLIP

it has a very good explanation of PAP and CHAP and is an excellent ppp
resource.
