Hi Fred
I have a horrible memory, so I can't remember 5.2 (at all :) )
However, I'll bet it's version of linuxconf already had this feature in
it's PPP configuration.
Believe it or not this is the simplest case for PPP dialup!
Run linuxconf, and go to
Networking->Client Tasks->PPP/SLIP/PLIP
Click add to add an interface and choose PPP. (don't try edit an existing
one, delete the old one(s) and start fresh
You will have a dialog that has the same kind of info to fill in as when
using the windows dialiup wizard. Just fill in your dialup number, choose
the right device for your modem, *** select PAP authentication ***, and
your username and password
Accept/Save/Quit your way out, and you are done.
I'm sure you know this, but just in case - bring up with
ifup ppp0
and down with
ifdown ppp0
