Has anyone here tried using the free ISP "freewwweb" ??

Or perhaps another way to phrase my question is:

Can someone here assist me in setting up my PPP to use PAP authentication?

i've been using PPP for years. I set it up by hand using one of the various
HOWTO documents floating around, back on RH 4.0 and have been just copying
the same setup forward as I upgrade.

I'm now on RH5.2 and am trying to use the free web access at freewwweb.com.
I've signed up, and have a username and a password.

FWIW Windoze dials up and connects just fine.

But I can't figure out how to get Linux to do it. They say you need to
configure PAP. I've followed what seems like what the docs (including
the PPP HOWTO) are saying but no joy.

it seems that my /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file should contain a line similar
to:

        my-username-at-the-ISP * my-password-at-the-ISP

and I've got it set accordingly.

In /etc/ppp/options I've got a line reading:

        name my-username-at-the-ISP

and in /etc/ppp/login I've got a line giving the dialing instructions:

        "" atdtxxxx

There is no chat script in /etc/ppp/login because: When there IS, chat
is waiting for a "ogin:" prompt which never comes and times out.

When there is NO chat script, we get a message from the ISP's terminal
server, then we die with (usually but not always) a message about serial
line is looped back.

I'm stumped!

Furthermore, if I use a terminal program (c-kermit, in my case) to dial
the same phone number, I get the terminal server banner, followed by a
prompt something like "Please enter System Password:" and nothing I enter
there goes beyond that. Certainly the assigned username or password does
not work.

I can't think of any further permutations to try, other than:

I moved my ppp config files out of the way and ran LINUXCONF and let it
configure ppp for me. The only thing it changed was the pap-secrets file,
and it looked essentially like the one I made by hand. Further, it did not
modify the login file at all, so when ppp starts it still dials the same
way I had it hand-configured.

I'm really stumped!

TIA
