that wont work because that needs disk slices to be given as
input(am i right?),but i want only some directories(users home

I use amanda. I'm happy with it. You can specify file systems.
If your backing up other users systems I strongly encourage you to
backup EVERYTHING.

Most vendors will give you equivalent credit if changing platforms. Look at
it as not losing your existing investment in Veritas.

I like amanda. Free, well supported, cross-Unix compatible. RPM's come
with Red Hat. Bit of a learning curve but well worth it IMHO.
