I have used amanda for about a year and A half now. I have only had to
revcover files that I accidently deleted well, one time most of a 10GB
partiton rm -f is not your friend in all cases :) Any way I believe the
amanda approcah is not necessarily one of restore this machine entirely,
but more of put an os on here and then restore the data kind of deal.
It does use native tar or dump to backup so you could probably get there
on a unix box. Windows might be a different story. When I first set
mine up I was more worried about the servers and never looked into the
smbtar/samba stuff. My partner asks about it occationally and I have to
say yeah I think we should backup your machine. Inthe meantime why
don't you use your home dir on the server :)
The amanda FAQ at amanda.org might be helpful. There is a great mailing
list too and very well supported by knowlegable users as well as the
primary author/maintainer. They are big on rtfm first.
I have not tried the rpms I did mine by hand and it was a drag. Of
course as most of thesse eaarly projects I bit off I barely knew what a
super user was, only that I did not want to be it. RPMS would help a
lot if they worked out the config issues. The amanda guys are vrey big
on cusomizing a configuration for a site. Ever since I installed it, all
I have to do is feed it the next tape (it tells you which one it is
expecting, and it does the rest for 4 machines and approx. 75GB of data
on a 30 GB dlt drive. The planner does a good job of interspersing
full, incremental and differntial backups so all your machines get
backed up with full backups at as often as you tell it. Mine is once a
week I think or was that twice a week,i forget.
