I just bought an Epson Stylus C80 to use with RH 6.0 realizing that I
probably wasn't going to realize anything close to the resolution the
printer is capable of without without installing a wad of upgrades.
Things could be going better.
This will buy me a B&W printout using the printtool option
Ran up2date yesterday and today downloaded all the rpms that looked like
pertinent to printing and ran them. All answered "Already installed."
Symptoms are still the same - Abiword and using lpr just end with no error

I have RH7.2 and a canon bjc6000 printer. It does a great job printing
pictures with gimp, but I can't get it to print text.
I set it up with printconf-gui, it showed me a bjc6000 driver which I
selected. Hit "apply" and then test. Popup box said "sent test page to

The printer is very low cost and prints real nice under window 98. So
far I cannot get it to do more than print its test page under linux.

You really don't need drivers. Try setting it up as a generic postscript
or PCL printer. In fact, usually you don't even need to use a print
filter with lpd for most Lexmark printers as they auto sniff the incomming
print job and treat it as PCL, PS, or ASCII appropriately.

Many times you can get away with just a symlink. Say you have
libncurses.so.5, you could do the following (assuming it's in /lib)
ln -s /lib/libncurses.so.5 /lib/libncurses.so.4

I'm not sure what the Lexmark enhanced drivers do exactly, but I have
an Optra Ep and it works just fine as a generic PostScript printer.
If you don't have PostScript on the E+, then it should work as an HP
LaserJet 4. Choose the appropriate filter in the printtool and
you should be good to go.
heh.. sorta sucks considering it would only need ncurses for a
setup/diagnostic proggy.. not the driver itself. I don't suppose they
wrote that under GPL.. if you can.. try to get the source and compile the
package yourself.

I just got a lexmark Optra E+ that I'd like to set up with my Linux system.
I downloaded the driver .rpm's from Lexmark's' support site and installed
them. However, after setting up the software, I cannot get it to run
because it says it has a failed dependency for libncurses.so.4. I currently

hi,
I managed to setup printing to a network printer on Redhat 6.1
The printer is a HP LaserJet 5/5M postscript. I set it up using samba.
Is there a way by which I can set the printer options when I am about to
print? The problem is that each application has its own way of setting
print option
