So RH9 is a complete solution and has no need to function correctly with
any outside apps to meet all of the reasonable needs of all who pay them
money for their OS?

their latest OS release actually *worked* with commonly used apps?

That's encouraging. Sounds like M$ ... or the government ... customers
can pound sand. Release a buggy distro then follow it with buggy
patches and then string them along endlessly. Is RH8 so much like the
voodoo code of M$ that they can't write a development plan to get 8.1
out on a sked?

Thousands of patches and kludges later RH8 is functional but well behind
the curve. Anyone know if/when RedHat intends to release a
significantly upgraded version? (I am sick of wasting time trying to
get things to work, or fixing things the updates break.)

In my efforts to fill as many of the gaps as possible I discovered the
need to supplement RH8 with something to equip the printing of a png
landscape file intact.
I have Beonex but even when I choose landscape mode the setting is
ignored and it prints in portrait mode, half of the image is lost.
When I follow these instructions I receive an error re.
/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES , apparently it does not exist and the loading
command doesn't create it.
Are these out dated instructions? If so, what has changed, please? (I
was using them to open gd-1.8.1-1.src.rpm)

I am currently using a US Robotics internal pci modem with no problems,
RH8 picked it up. I also have a backup $14. pci modem from SAMS, brand

I did not need to load any special driver for the US Robotics.

xpdf doesn't even offer a toolbar when I use it to open a pdf file.
How do you get text search features out of it?

You may want to try PdfSearch at http://pdfsearch.sourceforge.net/
Please share your results. (I have been using xpdf but it lacks text
search.)

Every time Ximian Evolution requests the E-mail password I check the box
to remember it -- and it fails to do so.
I have upgraded to the most recent version 1.2.0 to no avail. Is there
a security setting elsewhere that may override this?

Just loaded StarOffice 6.0 as root and cannot access it as a regular
user. The SO6 manual says it may be placed in the program directory for
"Unix" but offers no suggestions for doing so.
I looked around as root (in X rather than Bash) for a way to toggle
permissions for access to SO6 from a user
