Sounds like the X server is possibly not shutting down correctly. I would
run startx the first time and then shut it down and do a ps aux|grep
xinitrc and a ps aux|grep startx Make sure they aren't still running.
Also, take a peek at /var/log/Xerrors and see what it says. You may just
want to tail -10 /var/log/Xerrors
