can either try to turn of DNS lookup (don't know off hand right now where to
configure it) or make sure that the host that is connecting has an entry in
/etc/hosts

There are quite a few, very easy to install firewalls on freshmeat.net. I
personally like firewall by Jim. It has a nice install script and
wouldn't be any more difficult to install than any other program. That
is, as long as your kernel is properly configured and you have Iptables

Well squid is used for web proxying not pop3 or smtp. Sound like you
have two problems.
One is that your SMTP server (sendmail, qmail, postfix) isn't working
and then pop3 isn't working. What errors are you getting? Can you telnet
to ports 25 and 110? Can you retrieve mail manually over telnet and

I think the best start would to be get a hold of Firestarter
(http://firestarter.sourceforge.net) or get a hold of Firewall Builder
(www.fwbuilder.org).
Firestarter is more for newbs and does the job pretty well.
These two take away the headaches of command line iptables manipulation.

The best way to do an update would be backing up all data from your machine
and do a clean install of Redhat 9.0 because there have been a lot of changes

gotcha on the 8 vs 9. i won't go there then. i did go to redhat's site and
that's why i posted here. i guess the professional discs offer more office
type software and manuals, but i can't really tell what all's worth
