This just hit me as well, on a kosher 18.04 system.
I recently upgraded to a newer nvidia card, so that must have mangled it
somehow.
Looks like three of its symlinks got nuked:

I've done 2 tests on 2 different machines.
1) nvidia 960m, bionic-proposed: everything up to date except for
ubuntu-drivers-common. Nvidia driver is working when selected with
prime-select but switching to intel (prime-select intel) does not work.
Nvidia is still running.
2) nvidia 970m, bionic-p

For me nightlight is working perfectly after each reboot - but as soon as the
display is turned off nightlight is off when the screen is powered on again.
As a workaround I turn the setting off and on again.

so hard that I cannot even switch to a different tty.

It is not observed in the snap built from source (--channel=candidate
/from-source). An obvious difference is that the snap built from source
connects to the gtk

Waiting for other installations to finish followed by a restart of the
machine resolved the issue.

Currently my laptop has freshly installed ubuntu 18. Since from last week,
whenever I connect to the wifi though being connected, the wifi icon shows as
question mark which is weird.
Looked at previous bugs I suspect that this might be dns issue due to the
packages problems

@olivier.tilloy, unfortunately my system is not in the same exact state as
it was in early June, so I cannot provide an answer knowing nothing else to
the system has happened between then and now.
As far as I remember, rebooting the system nor the Software Center resolved
the issue, at that time.

very unlikely that that specific error message in the logs has anything
to do with the actual cause of the freeze.

@Jeb: I'm seeing a slightly different problem. Note that after
installing gnome-software-plugin-flatpak, you'll need to kill the
running instance of gnome-software for it to reload the flatpak plugin
(`killall gnome-software`). When I do that and do
