I'm currently running potato with the unofficial Xfree 4.03 debs
available from cpbotha. I'm running Ximian GNOME 1.4. It's the most
stable and usable setup I've had so far.

Well I think there was a problem with the xlibs .deb, as I had the symlink
set up correctly - /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults was pointing to
/etc/X11/app-defaults, but xlibs decided it was wrong and removed it. Then
when it tried to update its settings it died due to a broken pipe.
So I mkdir
/etc/X11/app-defaults
AFAIK all the packages that put stuff into misplaced app-defaults
should be fixed, s of now their app-default stuff is ignored (at least
that's what the message says).
possible solution:
(cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11; tar -cvf app-defaults.tar app-defaults)
(cd /etc/X11;

I have a Diamond Stealth III video card which has an S3 Vortex4 chipset.
I know that this chipset is not explicitly supported in XFree86 4.0.1,
but the S3 ViRGE and Trio3D cards are supported. Does anyone here happen
to know if the S3 Vortex4 is sufficiently backward compatible that I can
