Ok, so I have Debian Sarge installed here and I installed HAL. I Edited
"/etc/defaults/hal", for it to run as root, and added a symlink
"/etc/hal/device.d/fstab-sync.hal -> /usr/sbin/fstab-sync".
When I plug in a usb disk, a mount point in "/media" gets created and an
entry in "/etc/fstab"

Of course, you have to make sure you add a line in
/etc/apt/sources.list that includes testing and/or unstable and/or
experimental (alioth), then 'apt-get update'. Then use 'apt-get
install kde/testing' to install kde-3.3.2 (or use aptitude, if you
prefer).

What's happened is th
I want to replaces all multiple spaces with one space. My first
attempt was this:
sed -e 's/\ */\ /g'
This replaced all multiple spaces with one but as a side effect, sed
inserted a space between all characters. Playing a little I tried
this:
sed -e 's/[\ ]\ */\ /g'
and this works. The fact is

Hi all,
when running Sarge on my laptop, kernel 2.6.7-1-686 and alsa 1.0.5, I
had no problem with this. But now I'm running Ubuntu Hoary, which uses
2.6.10-1-386 and alsa 1.0.8, and sound volume is unusable low.
As you can see, all mixers are at 100% and unmuted:
$ amixer |grep Playback

I can't install Debian Woody on IBM series 335 that contains scsi disks and raid controller.
The installation just hang from the very beginning window!!
Does any one have experince with such machin?
Note: I've tried Debian on dell iso cd and it didn't work.

I have an empty /var/cache/apt/archives directory. For building
a custom CD, I want to have all packages that are installed on the
machine as a file on my computer, e.g. in the /var/cache/apt/archives
directory. Can I make apt-get download all the files for me? There
must be some magic :)
