The other day something dumped me into vi, which I got out of by my
usual method of trying every key combination I can think of, swearing
a lot and doing kill -9 from another vc.

it seems that the directory you want to look at is /var/tmp/vi.recover.

I use another vi-clone, vim, which saves the temporary files as
.filename.swp
vimdiff (part of the vim package) is really quite stunning, and
perhaps a reason to learn VI
