If you're running KDE or Gnome, a KDE or Gnome sound daemon might be getting "in the way". That can be fixed, but until you get sound working, I'd suggest sticking with a simpler wm like icewm. To look for one of these sound daemons, do a "ps ax | grep arts" (for KDE) or "ps ax | grep esound"; if you see something (other than your ps command), that's probably the problem. But rather than go into how to fix that, I'll wait to hear more from you.
