Looks like it happens when the IMAP connection to Yahoo mail is stuck - which
is quite often. Connection status is set to "established connection" only for
Yahoo Mail, for the other accounts (Protonmail, GMail) no issue.

and it fixes the issue for all KDE Qt5 Apps. Gentoo uses version 5.29.0 of
this package. Backporting the translation file to Debian will do the trick.

Looks like there's something faultly in the way the standard kde-l10n-fr

Got the 5.8.6 package. As of now no instability - will check over time to
confirm the result.

feature which allows apps to disable compositiong. This option should be
unchecked by default. (In system settings go to the display section, then
compositing)

This bug also appears to be why konsole (and only konsole) is crashing
for me which I had reported as bug 795815.
The test program Sebastian provides also causes the problem on my system
(Lenovo T430, AMD64, systemd, in an XFCE session).
Sadly the upstream bug simply says "please try with 5.5
and was renamed due to the std::string changes.

FreeBSD, there's a getpeereid() libc call. On kFreeBSD, no such thing
