dangling alternatives, but that was ages ago...
The various commands you said could be provided as slaves to
the /sbin/init alternative, which will make them be swit
on, or a solution for dak that detects that the target
distribution changed and requests a confirmation by signed email, for
instance.

not easy enough for you ?
Easy enough for me in my system. It would be nice to have a standard way
of telling the system to not start X on any Debian system while keeping
X start up being the default without the need of messing
with /etc/rc?.d/ and/or /etc/inittab.

I think gksu should not enter the session, but I still could not find a
way of doing that without adding a dependency on libgnomeui.
