As gimptool is unhelpful, and I don't wish to force autotools on
upstream, I ended up manually installing everything. Which seems to be
simpler than patching the upstream install target.

I've got a version 1.6.7 which has support for installing without threads:

However, someone since spotted that version 1.6.7 triggers a bug in
cpphs which can cause the program to hang and consume increasingly

There is already a packaged version of the rt73 firmware in
firmware-ralink. update-rt73-firmware provides a convenient way to
download and install a newer, unpackaged version. Unfortunately there
is no way to verify an arbitrary new version of the firmware.

thanks for your report, I wrote a preinst script which is running a
db4.7_upgrade if we are upgrading from a version less than 1.31-1.
This is fixed in the git repo in collab-maint and it will be included in the
next release.
