[Bug 85578] Re: ide secondary drives not recognized
As of April 10, 2007: 7.04 with 2.6.20-14 kernel and latest synaptic updates is much improved over my earlier complaints. The good news is: 1 I was able to load LiveCD, install to SATA primary and do on-line updating. 2 My secondary IDE master hard drive is now accessible and readable. I haven't tried executing installed distros there yet. 3. Your newer 8187 wifi module is working fine as far as I can tell. The remaining not-so-good news is: 1 Even though I have 512k of ram with 32k given to video, my Live cd install was iffy because free mem was only about 6k. Not enough for Firefox and console together, for example. 2. My secondary IDE slave cdrw is *not* accessible, even though /etc/fstab expects it at /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom (or cdrom0). There is no /dev/scd0 entry. 3. Boot-up is extremely slow, 3-5 minutes, but seems much longer. A similar condition on PCLinuxOS with 2.6.18 kernel exists. On that distro, I can see the boot time hang-up is the result of three unsuccessful tries at reading ide drive parameters. yeti -- ide secondary drives not recognized https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/85578 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Perhaps the *kernel* part of this problem (here) has been solved, and the remaining issues resides *elsewhere* in the Ubuntu source. Two clues in this regard: 1-Similar LITE-ON problems (here) exist in PCLinuxOS with 2.6.18 kernel are also *resolved* with the Bug 105437 approach; and 2-Fedora Core 6, with 2.6.18 kernel does *not* have the LITE-ON problem (here). [Bug 85578] Re: ide secondary drives not recognized
Both the earlier Ubuntu 7.04 alpha 5 and one downloaded on 3/16/07 gag (lock-up) computer if rtl8187 wifi is attached. Earlier alpha 5 passes its own md5sum check. New alpha 5 passes md5 sum check before and after burning to cd. If wifi not attached, earlier 7.04 alpha 5 sees _only_ sata primary; later 7.04 alpha 5 sees _only_ ide secondary. Please recall this sata/ide problem was originally reported as 6.1 Ubuntu problem not seeing ide secondary. No wifi problem at all in 6.1 PCLinuxOS, with a 2.6.18 kernel, also has trouble with sata primary and ide secondary. Thanks, Brian, for the fast reply. The attached lspci shows we have a Gigabyte mb. I use a new sata drive as primary. I have my old ide hd and cdrw plugged into ide secondary. For Knoppix and Mepis, the ide drives show up as hdc (for the ide hard drive) and hdd for the cdrw. My ubu was originally a 6.1 rc, but has been updated about daily; Mint 2.1 and 2.2 also very current. I should add that the ubu install has no entries fo hdc (hdc1,hdc5,hdc6,hdc7) or hdd. For cdrw or cdrom, Ubu looks for scd0, as I recall, but that's not in ubu's /dev either. I think that the Mepis clue may be significant, since it is also ubu based. [Bug 456977] Re: Lots of errors from the rt2x00pci driver
This bug, as originally described by Dima concerns the rt2500pci wlan spamming dmesg. Probably due to the kernel requesting the wlan for a mode the wlan cant recognize. It was recognized as a kernel problem as early as Sept 2009 and taken aboard by the kernel group at that time. Google 'rt2500pci spamming syslogd'. The problem, and the workaround still persist, for me, for 2.26.32. Others report the problem 'solved' in 2.26.34.999. Forget the previous mountall 2.5 comment, that's a much earlier version of mountall. I'm not happy that mountall 2.15 forces long-winded fscks of presumably clean ext3 partitions. @jhoechtl and @zob Just to be clear on my rt2500pci comments and status: 1. For me, the speed problem went away entirely with the latest 10.04 kernel. 2. For me, the new problem of spamming the logs is solved with no performance penalty with a small /etc/rc.local command. 3. Neither problem was more than a minor inconvenience once a work-around was discovered. I'm always much more interested in a timely work-around than some grand fix. Lucid fsck occurring every 20 mounts takes one minute 40 seconds when it occurs. /dev/sda4 is ext3, a journalled system; if 'clean' it takes less than a second to fsck. bebertii: I also have an rt2500 that complains too much with the 2.6.32 kernel. You can turn off the dmesg spam from rt2500 by adding the following line to /etc/rc.local: 'iwconfig wlan0 power off' without the quotes, of course. This disables 2.6.32 kernel's futile, possibly un-intended (my guesses), attempts to control rt2500 power management. I don't understand why the 'freeze some time' happens for you. You should probably try to find out more specifically what's causing the freezes. For example, see if the sheer volume of stuff in /var/log has anything to do with the freeze. dmesg and kern.log are keeping every last one of these little complaints. In my case, I am unaware of any performance problem if this is just ignored. Similarly, I am unaware of any problem from turning off the spam. With Lucid I get my best performance by adding the following: 'video=sisfb:mode:1024x768x32,rate:70,mem:4096' between 'ro' and 'quiet splash' in the grub menu entry. Leave off the quote marks, be precise with punctuation. [Bug 584050] Re: lucid fsck takes too long
I notice two things unique to Lucid in regard to fsck. 1. changing FSCKFIX=no to yes in /etc/default/rcS has _no_ effect. 2. the code in /etc/init/mountall.conf has some bearing on this. Item 1 appeared a while back in response to earlier impatience with Debian allowing too frequent fsck of ext3 systems. Item 2 seems fairly new and related to _mountall_ testing more than anything else. Maybe an unnecessary artifact? -- lucid fsck takes too long https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/584050 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 584339] Re: Old SiS video needs v86d for Lucid Plymouth
v86d does solve this problem; however, adding sisfb to /etc/modules does just as well. The splash screen does have an imperfection as shown in bun 521018, but it's not as objectionable as 30 seconds of black screen. -- Old SiS video needs v86d for Lucid Plymouth https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/584339 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 584050] Re: lucid fsck takes too long
Thank you for your automated response, Jeremy. To demonstrate this as your automated message suggests, I think would require two new installs. Since Ubuntu went to Grub2 I hesitate to do anything so major on my dual boot system without a very good reason. What I've noted I don't know how to demonstrate on a liveCD. It is something that happens on the 'forced fsck' every 20 mounts on an installed system. If the clues I've given don't suggest something useful regarding a regression I never experienced in the last several years using Ubuntu, then I can wait for a better reason to re-install. You might want to try using any liveCD of yours on any healthy unmounted Ubuntu system of yours and see what results you get for fsck on a 'clean' ext3 partition. I don't think it's one minute 40 seconds. -- lucid fsck takes too long https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/584050 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 584339] Re: Old SiS video needs v86d for Lucid Plymouth
This is probably another way to look at bug #530554. I agree with bug #530554 note 2. Lucid installer may (or must) not recognize SiS video needs sisfb. Jeremy, FYI Concerning the obligatory fsck every 20 mounts with Lucid: With the splash screen _off_ , at 30 seconds of black screen the console reports that the fsck is being done by util-linux-ng 2.17.2; This lasts one minute 40 seconds before continuing to the login phase. [Bug 1882441] Re: Gwyddion Modules not loading: undefined math symbols
Funny thing, the modules fail to load with the same errors even with LD_PRELOAD=/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6 gwyddion despite the symbols being defined there. LD_PRELOAD does not influence dlopen()ed modules? Anyway, when the program is simply compiled from source code (using ~/opt/gwyddion as installation prefix): sudo apt-get install libgtkglext1-dev libfftw3-dev wget http://gwyddion.net/download/2.56/gwyddion-2.56.tar.xz tar -tf gwyddion-2.56.tar.xz cd gwyddion-2.56 ./configure --prefix=$HOME/opt/gwyddion make make install it can be run ~/opt/gwyddion/bin/gwyddion and works normally. So this obviously some linking peculiarity when packaging. I suggest to start by adding --enable-library-bloat configure option when packaging. It often makes things work when distros add evil linker flags. But it may be insufficient. We may have to add some explicit -lm when this option is enabled. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1882441 Title: Gwyddion Modules not loading: undefined math symbols To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gwyddion/+bug/1882441/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Still not working... though two days ago Synaptic downloaded an update for several Evolution components. Since it looks this bug is not THAT critical for evolution/gnome teams as to fix it quickly (I've struggling on this one for 2 months): Is there a known workaround for this? By the way: Luckily, Evolution is my 2nd. option for mail management, because I perform most of my work on Thunderbird + DavMail. Finally I found a solution. WARNING: This is an absolutely NON scientific method. It is 100% based on try & fail. So far, it's been working for me for the whole day. 0: Synaptic is set at maverick-proposed level. 1: Uninstall Evolution with "sudo aptitude purge evolution evolution-indicator evolution-documentation-en evolution-common evolution-couchdb evolution-exchange evolution-data-server evolution-webcal evolution-plugins". Don't care about warnings: Go ahead, because "Fortune favors the bold". 2: Delete your Evolution folder (at ~/.evolution). 3: Install again evolution + exchange plugin with "sudo apt-get install evolution evolution-exchange". 4: Restart Evolution. Let it sync. 5: Optional step: Disable as many add-ons as possible. Honestly I don't know if any of them is responsible... Before this, I've got three major problems: - At start-up, usually Evolution froze while syncing. Or downloading new messages content (headers showed up fine). - If started off-line, showed a wrong URL message for each preview. - Trash folder sometimes appeared as a regular folder, sometimes as a real Trash can (main difference was the absence of the "empty trash" option). In Synaptic, "repositories", 3rd. tab (I guess it says "updates"), you'll find 4 check-boxes. You should mark the first 3 ones. John: I've found that freeze while syncing at startup MIGHT (again I'm trying & falling) have a relationship with an option in your account preferences. I'm attaching a screenshot of what it looks in Ubuntu spanish (the option, unchecked in order to avoid the problem) is pointed. In english it should say something like "scan all folders for new messages". What I've found is that when this option is checked, Evolution hangs badly at startup. When unchecked, Evolution starts and syncs Inbox fine. Of course, you'll only be able to test this if you manage to start Evolution up to the point where you configure your account preferences. My advice, is try over and over. You may need to kill Evo, or even restarting your computer. Also, give a try to an off-line startup. ** Attachment added: "Pantallazo-3.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution-exchange/+bug/631395/+attachment/1774922/+files/Pantallazo-3.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/631395 Title: When upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10, exchange mail accounts no longer work in Evolution.
