[Bug 369212] [NEW] fortune-mod not included in base install jaunty amd64

2009-04-29 Thread shmengie
Public bug reported:

Wanda the fish says "cannot find executable" or "no suitable executable
found" or something like that. I'm only aware of fortune-mod missing on
amd64 base install of Jaunty

apt-get install fortune-mod

Resolves the issue, but it's another step when setting up a new
workstation...

[Bug 286664] [NEW] Printing with Evince, No user feedback

2008-10-20 Thread shmengie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Printing from Evince, there is no indication the application is
printing. With a multi-page tiff, printing generates a huge output file
roughly 1+mb per page. This makes causes jobs take quite a while and
w/out feedback, the user may believe the print job failed.

Other than watching the CPU usage, there is no indication there will be
a print job.

2008-10-25 Thread shmengie
The login screen prompts for username/password after entering it
continues to load gnome as usual, but appears to crash hard while
loading applets.

Everything is at default settings.

If I switch to a VT console, X fails to load and spits out a few errors
related to MTRR then tries starting again. If I let it load it will
crash with the screen garbled as though video memory is at issue.

Tried Ctrl Alt +/- to change video resolution to a lower resolution,
still crashes.

2009-12-12 Thread shmengie
I have an Acer Laptop w/dual core Intel cpu. Forced it to 1ghz as the
peak speed, because it will overheat if a process gets too carried away
and I'm not minding it. Sometimes it happens because I leave a flash
player running in Firefox.

I thought I had done nothing to affect the temp/speed.. Forgot that I
had throttled it down, but I need to slow the messages being generated.

Other users may experience this same issue and have their filesystem
filled w/out warning.

[Bug 494311] [NEW] Ubuntu patch for rdesktop breaks keyboard handling.

2009-12-08 Thread shmengie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rdesktop

I found rdesktop with Ubuntu frustrating. Caps-lock doesn't work and/or
the numberpad is broken.

There is a patch applied by the Ubuntu source that differs from
rdesktop.sourceforge.net somehow.

Ubuntu rdesktop has a -y switch which I find necessary to get caps-lock
to work with Ubuntu. This however breaks the number pad.

I compiled rdesktop.sourceforge.net source and this issue dissappeared.
Started hunting for the culprit, but that took much more energy than
installing the rdesktop binary I compiled.

However, every time I setup a new workstation this issue becomes another
task. Argh...

I doubt I'm the only one that's had to deal with this issue. Can we
somehow revert to rdesktop source to rdesktop source?

Thank You

Re: [Bug 369212] Re: fortune-mod not included in base install jaunty amd64

2010-05-20 Thread shmengie
The ideal fix I suppose would be to either remove wanda the fish from
the default installation, add a dependency for the fortune module for wanda.

Ol' timers like myself expect fortune to come with Linux, but it's not
necessary, by any stretch.

[Bug 500674] [NEW] gvfsd is maxing out the cpu on an nfs mount, have seen it max out cpu on samba mounts too.

2009-12-26 Thread shmengie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Mounted nfs mounts by hand to /media/server directory. Used it to burn
files to cd.

After closing nautilus views (or they crashed don't remember)... Used
the Disk mounter to open another view and left it open, little to no
activity, just to see if leaving nautilus open started peaking out cpu
usage. It does.

It might be because the nfs mounted data changes persistently, however
this is causing cpu to burn hot, which is causing additional issues :(

Re: [Bug 500674] gvfsd is maxing out the cpu on an nfs mount, have seen it max out cpu on samba mounts too.

2010-07-05 Thread shmengie
Afraid I may not be able to reproduce the conditions which caused the
issue.

Have since upgraded to 10.04 and have choosen a different access
methodology.

As far as I know, the bug has not shown itself since the upgrades.

[Bug 494311] Re: Ubuntu patch for rdesktop breaks keyboard handling.

2010-09-17 Thread shmengie
Suggest setting priority even lower. Rdesktop w/out the raw patch does
fix one problem, but it doesn't resolve all keyboard issues.

Remmina appears to be a much better solution for rdesktop client.

Thanks to Robert Ancell for pointing me to Remmina and thanks to Vic
Lee & company for putting Remmina together.

The current Ubuntu Remmina uses rdesktop, but the keyboard appears to
operate better.

The current development version uses FreeRDP and resolves all keyboard
issues (for me).

For what it's worth, Remmina is a class act VNC, SSH & RDP client
manager that does a very nice job for each.
