[Bug 239584] Re: fullscreen apps switch to window mode unexpectedly

2008-08-27 Thread seanlano
I can also confirm this problem with Hardy 8.04.1. Running full-screen
games (I tried Wormux, 2 Light Years, Slime Volley and GCompris) and
they unexpectedly change between full-screen and windowed modes (they
change back to full-screen as well).

[Bug 548362] Re: nvidia-current 195.36.15 + kernel 2.6.32 + dual cards crashes system

2010-05-01 Thread seanlano
I had a similar problem, but I only have one graphics card.

On 32bit Lucid everything worked fine, but on 64bit Lucid all of the
nvidia drivers cause the system to not load a graphical environment, but
I can still use a tty to uninstall the driver and go back to nouveau.

[Bug 515024] [NEW] Regression: Loss of "text-based" location bar in 2.29

2010-01-31 Thread seanlano
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In previous versions of Ubuntu, it was possible to click on the small pencil
icon in Nautilus and then type the path you wanted to go to, rather than have
to click through all the folders.
In Lucid Alpha 2 with Nautilus 2.29, this icon (and therefore this
functionality) is gone.
There should at least be an option in the Nautilus preferences to show the
icon, if so desired. This functionality is very useful, and is a big regression
to have it removed.
See attached screenshots for a graphical representation.

[Bug 509079] Re: nautilus has tabs on bottom

2010-01-31 Thread seanlano
I think this is a bit of a regression. Why would this be changed? I know
the extra pane has been added, but to move tabs from the top to the
bottom is a long way! At the very least this should be customisable in
the Nautilus preferences.

Seriously, having the tabs at the bottom of the screen is like having
the tabs on manila folders at the bottom of the filing cabinet drawer.
It just doesn't make sense, when you're changing tabs you're probably
going to be changing the file path at the same time, and having to move
to the bottom of the screen is stupid and time-consuming.

[Bug 554439] [NEW] 64bit Lucid fails during boot due to Nvidia driver

2010-04-02 Thread seanlano
Public bug reported:

On 64 bit Lucid, installed from Beta 1 LiveCD, after installing
"nvidia-current" (which appears to install successfully) on subsequent boots
the graphical display fails to load, dumping me to tty1. This also happens with
"nvidia-173".
The only way I have found to get back to a working graphical display is to
uninstall "nvidia-current" from the tty display and reboot. Obviously doing
that means the nvidia drivers don't load, and 3D acceleration is unavailable.

Using 32 bit Lucid beta on the same computer the nvidia drivers work
just fine, the problem seems to be with the 64 bit architecture.

2018-04-27 Thread seanlano
Damn, just missed out. :/ Thanks Daniel. :)

Looks like there's only very minor changes in 1.10.5, so judging by the
criteria for SRU it shouldn't be too hard. I'll get onto a bug report
for that at some point, it at least can (hopefully) make it into the
18.04.2 release Live CD. Will be a bit of a pain in the meantime.

[Bug 1767559] [NEW] Provide libinput 1.10.5 in bionic-updates to fix specific touchpad and keyboard issues

2018-04-27 Thread seanlano
Public bug reported:

This is an SRU request to bring the libinput 1.10.5 microrelease to
bionic-updates.

Bionic ships with 1.10.4, but the 1.10.5 microrelease fixes several
highly specific issues with Lenovo T440, T450s and X280 and Dell XPS13
L322X laptops. See: https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/wayland-
devel/2018-April/037934.html

[Impact]

 * Users of Dell XPS13 L322X laptops have an almost unusable touchpad
out-of-the-box with Bionic. This has been reported in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/libinput/+bug/1746740 and fixed upstream in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104990 .

 * Users of Lenovo T440, T450s and X280 laptops also have suboptimal
touchpad experiences.

[Test Case]

 * The issue can be reproduced on any Dell L322X laptop, by booting the
Bionic live CD. The touchpad will only work with the slightest touch,
any more amount of touch pressure falsely triggers the palm detection
and the cursor won't move.

 * Manually overriding the HWDB with the patches available in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104990 fixes the issue.

 * These patches have been released in libinput 1.10.5.

 * With the patched HWDB or latest microrelease, the touchpad works
properly out-of-the-box.

[Regression Potential]

 * Regressions are highly unlikely, changes will only affect users with
the above mentioned devices.

[Other Info]

It is worth noting that the Dell XPS13 L322X is from the Sputnik series
of "Developer Edition" laptops from Dell, which are supposed to have
excellent Ubuntu support and came pre-installed with Ubuntu 12.04 when
first released. Every release from 12.04 to 17.10 had perfect out-of-
the-box touchpad support, so this bug is a regression. I realise this is
because of the change away from synaptics as the input driver, but in
terms of user experience presents a serious regression.

2018-04-07 Thread seanlano
I've also got an L322X - and am experiencing this same issue, touchpad
seems to lock up after some time, and is also impossible to click and
drag with.

I've just installed a fresh Bionic system onto my machine, and have the
latest updates. That did not seem to help.

I installed "xserver-xorg-input-synaptics" and now the touchpad seems to
work fine when I use the Xorg session. I haven't tried the Wayland
session.

cause, I get the same error even if I put the wrong password in so it
seems like it's getting denied somewhere before it can even try to
decrypt the disk.

[Bug 1746740] Re: XPS13 L322X Bionic (daily dev) touchpad laggy

2018-04-08 Thread seanlano
Yeah I also see the OSD keyboard backlight issue - but I actually have
been seeing that from time to time even in Artful and possibly before. I
assumed it was my hardware playing up, but seems like maybe not. At any
rate, it's not very frequent for me - only a couple of times after boot.

2018-04-10 Thread seanlano
I've followed the step linked to in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104990 and have found that
using 'libinput measure touchpad-pressure --touch-thresholds=105:60
--palm-threshold=230' seemed to work well.

I was not able to format it into the hwdb file, however, so couldn't
actually test it on my machine.

[Bug 1767559] Re: Provide libinput 1.10.6 in bionic-updates to fix specific touchpad and keyboard issues

2018-07-17 Thread seanlano
** Description changed:

- This is an SRU request to bring the libinput 1.10.6 micro release to
+ This is an SRU request to bring the libinput 1.10.7 micro-release to
  bionic-updates.

- Bionic ships with 1.10.4, but the 1.10.5/6 micro releases fix several
- highly specific issues with Lenovo T440, T450s and X280 and Dell XPS13
- L322X laptops. See: https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/wayland-
- devel/2018-April/037934.html
+ Bionic ships with 1.10.4, but the 1.10.5 - 1.10.7 micro-releases fix
+ several highly specific issues with Lenovo T440, T450s and X280 and Dell
+ XPS13 L322X laptops. See: https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives
+ /wayland-devel/2018-April/037934.html

** Summary changed:

keyboard issues

[Bug 1643870] [NEW] Pulseaudio fails to detect card after recent update

2016-11-22 Thread seanlano
Public bug reported:

For months, audio has been working fine on this Dell XPS13 laptop. It is a
fresh install of 16.04, from around the time it was released.
There were some pulseaudio updates installed on my machine today (see the
attached apt term.log output). Since then, audio output has been unreliable.
I've discussed this a small amount on AskUbuntu
http://askubuntu.com/a/852277/237387
I found that running this command to reinstall the updated packages would
sometimes bring back audio output - sometimes for a while, but sometimes only
for a few seconds after a reboot.

sudo apt install --reinstall pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils pulseaudio-
module-bluetooth pulseaudio-module-x11 libpulse-mainloop-glib0 libpulse0
libpulsedsp

I can see Launchpad has several almost identical sounding bugs, from
many years ago. #461258, #926840, #926840, #995961, #1132982. None of
those were ever resolved. I hope this does not end the same way.

OK, I've just started seeing this on my Toshiba W50X laptop, with Ubuntu 14.04
on it. It now shows no selectable outputs in the Sound Preferences window. I
also have a desktop with an ASRock Z77 motherboard and Ubuntu 16.04 seeing the
same thing!
What other info should I be gathering? It doesn't seem to be kernel related, I
tried installing an older kernel on the affected desktop and it didn't help at
all.

[Bug 1636253] Re: blocks audio output for other applications

2016-11-22 Thread seanlano
Try to disable the squeezelite service, with:

sudo systemctl stop squeezelite.service
sudo systemctl disable squeezelite.service

This will prevent it from loading on reboot. For me, this fixes the problem.
You will need to start it manually when you want to use it, by opening a
terminal and running the command "squeezelite". Press Ctrl+C to terminate it
when done.

This seems to be some problem with the init scripts.

[Bug 1636253] Re: blocks audio output for other applications

2016-11-23 Thread seanlano
OK, thanks - that makes sense.

If I run `squeezelite` from a terminal when logged it, it correctly uses
(I'm assuming) PulseAudio, because I can hear both system sounds and
squeezelite music. Could it just be a matter of having squeezelite wait
until PulseAudio is loaded before starting itself? I'll have a go
writing a systemd init config that tries to do this.

[Bug 1724088] [NEW] All snap packages fail to start with 'udev_enumerate_scan failed'

2017-10-16 Thread seanlano
Public bug reported:

After some updates in the last weeks or so, I am no longer able to run
any application installed as a snap package. I have tried this for both
'keepassxc' and 'rocketchat-desktop'.

Trying to open these applications from the Unity launcher shows no
output. Trying to open them from a terminal shows the single line
"udev_enumerate_scan failed" and no further messages. Doing a "tail -f
/var/log/syslog" shows no output at all when trying to run the snap.

This is on an Ubuntu 16.04 machine, and the problem occurs with both the
4.10.0-37-generic and 4.4.0-97-generic kernels.

[Bug 1608164] [NEW] Missing indicator icons after first login

2016-07-30 Thread seanlano
Public bug reported:

This is a fresh install of 16.04.
When the computer first boots, the greeter correctly shows all the indicator
icons in the top right (i.e. accessibility, time, power menu). After the first
login, then going back to the greeter either by logging out or by switching
user, only the accessibility indicator is shown. Most importantly, this means
the power menu cannot be used after logging out.
I have this happening on two machines, both with fresh installs of 16.04. One
is a desktop machine with an nVidia GPU and the other is a laptop with Intel
HD3000 GPU, both show the same problem.

[Bug 1568435] Re: Tor cannot start `obfs4proxy` ('Operation not permitted')

2016-07-31 Thread seanlano
@guch9ux9cx, you'll need to reload the apparmor profile once you make the
change. You can do this with:
  sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/system_tor
Or you can reboot - but on a LiveCD this will overwrite the change.

[Bug 1568435] Re: Tor cannot start `obfs4proxy` ('Operation not permitted')

2016-07-31 Thread seanlano
I think the problem is the 'P' flag - according to the reference
(http://wiki.apparmor.net/index.php/AppArmor_Core_Policy_Reference#Execute_rules)
this causes environment scrubbing, which obfs4proxy needs in order to
communicate with Tor.

[Bug 1568435] Re: Tor cannot start `obfs4proxy` ('Operation not permitted')

2016-08-01 Thread seanlano
A fix would just have to be changing the apparmor profile that comes with the
tor package in Ubuntu.
I don't know how to do that, but I guess it would involve submitting a patch or
something. I'll try figure it out - it's such an easy fix, we just need someone
to put it into the repository.

[Bug 591707] Re: After upgrade lucid -> maverick eth0 interface is gone

2012-04-08 Thread seanlano
I experienced this problem (apparently, although I do not recall it since it
was a while ago), and I can confirm that the problem is gone in Oneiric, and
also the Precise testing releases I have used.
In fact, as a little side-note, Precise seems to be working better than Oneiric
did - a problem I had with the headphones port on my laptop is fixed, for
example. It's nice to see devs working to close bugs. :)

[Bug 859381] Re: 'Create Launcher' is missing from Desktop context menu

2011-09-29 Thread seanlano
But I can copy existing launchers from other Ubuntu partitions and they work,
so clearly support for the launcher itself has not been dropped. It's just the
GUI tool for creating the launcher that has been lost. But I guess if this is
the way forward then we can only hope there is a developer out there that
writes a separate application to replace this function. Maybe through
nautilus-actions or something like that.
In the mean-time, I'm going to try putting an empty .desktop file in the
"Templates" folder, then hopefully I can still right-click and select a
"Launcher" template, then right-click on it and edit it with the normal GUI.

[Bug 859381] Re: 'Create Launcher' is missing from Desktop context menu

2011-09-26 Thread seanlano
I found this while doing a search of the interwebs, on the changelog for
nautilus:

nautilus (1:3.1.3-0ubuntu3) oneiric; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/12_remove_create_launcher_on_desktop.patch:
- remove the "create launcher" entry from desktop right-click. It's
depending
on a gnome-panel binary, confusing the user when unity is running and
default upstream sessions don't have even nautilus drawing the icons on
the desktop. Do the same for other places as well. (LP: #723861)

  Not a bug specifically, but...

- It would be really nice if, when you hit Super and start typing the name
- of an application you wish to open, Unity behaved more like GNOME-Do.
- What I mean is that in Unity's current form, you have to type the proper
- name of the application. Whereas in GNOME-Do, you can just hit a few
- characters from it and it will find it for you. For example, "Synaptic
- Package Manager". In Unity you have to start typing S Y N, but in GNOME-
- Do you could type S M or S P or S P M, etc and it knows what you mean.
- The letters don't have to be adjacent to each other in the name of the
- application for GNOME-Do, but they must be in Unity. This would be a
- nice little feature to have, and would make Unity that little bit more
- unifying.

[Bug 608162] [NEW] GNOME Keyring Daemon stops panel's shutdown

2010-07-21 Thread seanlano
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

Almost every time I click "Shut Down" from the panel's menu for it, I get an
error that says: "GNOME-Keyring-Daemon is not responding." Then I can choose
"Shut Down anyway" and the computer usually turns off after that, but sometimes
I need to use a sudo shutdown command.
Also, sometimes when I select "Shut Down" from the panel, nothing happens at
all. Again, I need to use a sudo shutdown command to turn off the computer.
This happens for all of the users on this computer (a Thinkpad laptop).
This issue is particularly annoying for non-administrator users, because if
selecting "Shut Down" from the panel doesn't work they cannot issue a sudo
shutdown command - which means I need to assist them in changing to a tty
terminal, logging in as me, and then giving the sudo shutdown command.
