Did you check the checksum (md5) of the live CD? Burning ROM software
should be able to tell you and you can compare with the checksum that is
displayed on the download site.

You can get the correct checksum from the download site and to get the
checksum from your own CD just use the command 'md5sum FILENAME' where
FILENAME should be your live CD.

[Bug 306244] Re: Unable to install Ubuntu 8.10 on Everex Impact GC 3500

2008-12-09 Thread Bernhard
Not sure where you want to do this (Linux or Windows) but I guess you
are currently working on the Windows side since your Ubuntu is not
working. You can download md5-checkers for Windows at http://md5-check-
windows.qarchive.org/ (or simpy google for many more). There is also
instructions on that site.

All I'm saying is that your burn might be incorrect. You could also try
to download Ubuntu again (or download xubuntu from xubuntu.org) and see
if you still have the same problem. Computer problems can only be solved
by try and error. :)

[Bug 301791] Re: flash player not fully working on Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit Firefox 3

2008-12-09 Thread Bernhard
I tried it myself and zeddock is right. You have to do something like
this:

sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree
sudo apt-get autoremove (removes nspluginwrapper and others)

then go to

usr/lib/firefox/plugins
usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

and in each case, remove the symbolic links in the plugin directories
pointing to nspluginwrapper and put the downloaded libflashplayer.so
instead. Then it works!

I never tried gOS: it uses an older version of Ubuntu but I guess the
point of it is that you can use Google gadgets on your desktop. Don't

[Bug 119416] Re: Akregator does not open new window with javascript method

2008-11-19 Thread Bernhard
I will reopen this bug. Don't understand why this is not fixed. Another
explanation:

When I double-click on an article in akregator then I don't get the
browser. There are settings in akregator configuration that determine
what should happen after such a double-click but they are not enforced.
Actually, nothing happens after a double-click.

Let me know if there is anything still unclear with my description but
there is definitely a bug there.

[Bug 300194] [NEW] import feeds from firefox into akregator

2008-11-19 Thread Bernhard
Public bug reported:

There is a bug when I set akregator as default RSS reader and I want to
import feeds directly from firefox.

So say I have akregator installed and set it as default application for
RSS feeds in firefox. Then I can click on the RSS symbol in the location
bar and akregator will automatically import this feed. So far, so good.
But there is one problem: the imported URL is always wrong and for a
very simple reason, it looks something like

http:newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/

i.e. it's always http:... which cannot be right since it's 4 /'s. My
akregator version is 1.3.1 (KDE 4.1.2).

[Bug 301313] [NEW] double-clicking on .emerald file does not import the file into the theme manager

Currently, when I'm double-clicking on an .emerald file, the emerald
theme manager pops up, but it does not import the relevant theme-file.
Similarly when I type

[Bug 302415] [NEW] archive liferea feeds by days?

2008-11-26 Thread Bernhard
Public bug reported:

Is it possible to archive liferea feeds by the number of days they are
old? Say I want to archive all messages that are less than 4 days old.
Is that possible? I don't see how to do it. In this case I would like to
make this a wish.

[Bug 376700] [NEW] zsh completion does not recognize ".." as directory in 4.3.9

2009-05-14 Thread Bernhard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: zsh

Happened from the switch 4.3.6 --> 4.3.9, reconstruction simple: type

cd ..

and hit TAB. Then you would expect to have "cd ../" but instead I get
stuff like "cd .emacs.d" and I think the reason for this is that ".." is
not recognized as a directory. This even happens without .zshrc, so I
don't think the problem is my configuration.

AFAIK, this bug cannot be fully fixed until Intel fixes the problems in
their new drivers, the introduction of
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_Execution_Manager seems to have
failed badly.

So it's confusing to say that it's fixed in karmic. Maybe this should
simply be changed.

Of course Ubuntu recommends using jaunty. But the main issue here is
the Intel driver, so you cannot purely blame Ubuntu for this
particular problem. So it may be better to continue this discussion on
the freedesktop forum or send complaint mails to Intel?

I don't want to annoy Intel devs (since we really depend on them now
more than ever), but I wouldn't be surprised if they said: "Hey, we
have this new GEM idea, let's first test it with Linux kernels before
we use it on commercial software."

Btw, I had another idea regarding the GUI, why not start the GUI without

give the user another idea that he is doing something to his system and
it's another chance to stop the process.

I just played around a little with the 2.6.30 kernels from the jaunty

When I switched my keyboard from "Germany" to "Germany, eliminate dead

[Bug 379302] Re: "Open with..." does not work with emacs

2009-06-02 Thread Bernhard
Thanks to Peng and GreySim, that finally worked. But I don't quite get
it: I tried adding the desktop files in the main menu and that did NOT
work. You really have to sudo into the /usr/share/applications/ files.
So it really seems to be a bug in the emacs22 package.

Just noticed that this is a dup of bug 347538, will mark it as such. I
still think the current behavior is not intuitive: if the indicator
applet is invisible, I cannot even remove it from the panel, because I
cannot find the point on the panel where I have to right-click. That's
just not good.

Not sure but if you have scrolling problems, this could also be a
problem with your video card. Do you really have scrolling problems
*only* with Gmail? Try other browsers, maybe opera or epiphany-browser
and check if the problem persists.

2009-05-01 Thread Bernhard
Well, you could disable chat in the gmail tab and use pidgin as gmail
chat client. I find it much better anyway because it's more
configurable. Just go to "Applications" "Internet" "Pidgin" and set it
up as Gmail chat client, it's very easy to do, I think.

[Bug 356510] Re: [i965] Wierd backlight brightness behaviour looks like flashes on Amilo Si 2636

2009-05-01 Thread Bernhard
I used Aldrin's advice from bug 367309 and that actually fixes my
problem with the bizarre brightness settings (I have yet to long-term-
test if the flashes go away as well). You type

xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL combination

and the brightness behavior is completely normal again. How can I have
this permanently set (instead of running a script everytime I login)?
Maybe it could be fixed since many people have this intel video card.
Shouldn't it be fixed in xserver-xorg-video-intel?

[Bug 356510] Re: [i965] Wierd backlight brightness behaviour looks like flashes on Amilo Si 2636

2009-05-01 Thread Bernhard
** Description changed:

I have random screen flashes in Jaunty beta, where the screen goes black
for a split second. Similar flashes appear when I play around with the
  brightness applet in the gnome-panel.

  To reproduce the problem:
  1) use your hotkeys to set brightness to min (darkest screen)
  2) use your hotkey "brightness up" to go to maximum brightness
  3) go further up beyond the max
Result: the screen will go dark again. Going further up with brightness will
at some point stabilize the maximum brightness.
Example: my BACKLIGHT levels are 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-0 and if I start from 1 and
keep hitting the "brightness up" hotkey then I get the pattern
1-4-5-6-7-0-7-2-0-0-0
The interesting thing here is that it dims from 0 to 7 to 2 even though I
press "brightness up".
+
+ UPDATE: typing "xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL
+ combination" into a terminal fixes the problem. Thanks to Aldrin!

[Bug 371743] [NEW] Dust Sand window borders: text overlaps with icon in window title bar

2009-05-04 Thread Bernhard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-themes-ubuntu

In the Dust Sand theme, the text overlaps with the icon in the window
title bar. It's easy to understand what I mean if you look at the
attached screenshot.

I think I have a pretty normal jaunty install and I'm using the human
icon set in that screenshot. So I think it's a theme bug.

[Bug 356702] Re: Jaunty: window switcher tooltips stick when they shouldn't

2009-04-19 Thread Bernhard
I wasn't sure if it was metacity issue or not. All I know is that it
happened to me ever since I upgraded to Gnome 2.26. It might be a Gnome
issue as well though, because these tooltips are completely useless
notifications of the gnome panel (the dragging in the switcher has once
been abondoned because it was too buggy).

I agree that it's a very annoying bug.
