I used Aldrin's advice from bug 367309 and that actually fixes my problem with the bizarre brightness settings (I have yet to long-term- test if the flashes go away as well). You type
xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL combination and the brightness behavior is completely normal again. How can I have this permanently set (instead of running a script everytime I login)? Maybe it could be fixed since many people have this intel video card.
