[Bug 252023] [NEW] configure display applet crashes X in intrepid

2008-07-25 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

Running Intrepid new install on an HP Pavilion laptop with ATI Radeon
Xpress 200M and ati/radeon driver. The new applet Configure Display
Settings appeared in today's updates. I tried it out, and selected the
"Rotate" option button. On choosing "Left" the display vanished, and
returned me to the login greeter. Choosing any available session except
Failsafeterminal and trying to log in again returns to the login greeter
after an X crash.

The logs contain the message "gdm: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler:
Fatal X error: Restarting X :0"

but of course X never does restart properly.

I get no help from xfix or any other option; the bare-bones xorg.conf is
of no help. How do I recover from this error without re-installing?

[Bug 252023] Re: configure display applet crashes X in intrepid

2008-07-25 Thread Stephen Cradock
The "new" applet apparently simply calls the Screen Resolution capplet
of gnome-control-center. This means that the crash is caused by a gnome
component. Can someone at least push this upstream, please?

[Bug 241139] Re: Intrepid Ibex: Cannot access samba share "Unable to mount location"

2008-07-26 Thread Stephen Cradock
Since Intrepid alpha3 (at least) none of the three methods works to
mount a windows share: Nautilus sees the server, but no shares;
smbclient sees no shares; gvfs-ls sees no shares. gvfs-mount says that
"volume doesn't implement mount".

smbtree sees the Windows server, but times out waiting for details.
nmblookup -S workgroup reports the (two - local and remote) members
correctly, with the correct IP addresses.

[Bug 252023] Re: configure display applet crashes X in intrepid

2008-07-26 Thread Stephen Cradock
Further information: the relevant plugin calls xrandr to set screen and
display properties. I have checked xrandr itself on my Intrepid system,
and it works correctly to set the display inverted, normal, left, normal
in sequence.

The bug reported above involves the "new" applet that calls the xrandr
plugin to gnome-settings-daemon; if I select Rotation | Left and click
Apply the display blacks out and does not recover. Subsequent attempts
to login result in failure, retruning me to the login greeter.

I was able to recover from this situation by the following sequence:

login to Failsafe Terminal session;

xrandr --screen 0 -o normal

At this point an attempt to login failed again.

login to Failsafe Terminal session;

xrandr --screen 0 -o normal

gconf-editor [opens as a GUI without window decoration], set
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/xrandr/active to OFF;

sudo chmod 755 / [just in case there is a global permissions problem -
no idea if this is necessary]

exit and login again - success - normal desktop returns.

It seems clear that there is a problem in the applet, rather than the
underlying program xrandr - this seems to work correctly on my system
(HP Pavilion laptop, with AMD64 processor and ATI Radeon Xpress 200M
graphics. Using the OS drivers, not fglrx.)

[Bug 252724] [NEW] fglrx fails to load with 2.6.24-20 kernel in 8.04

2008-07-28 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

I accepted the 2.6.24-20 kernel file updates this afternoon, but noticed
that after rebooting into the new kernel the displaly (ATI Radeon Xpress
200M 5955) was running slowly. glxinfo reports no Direct Rendering, and
shows the mesa.org driver being used. The Xorg.0.log shows that the
fglrx modules failed to load. The /lib/modules/2.6.24-20/volatile folder
does contain fglrx.ko.

Reverting to the older (-19) kernel restores direct rendering and the
use of the fglrx driver.

[Bug 132612] Re: memory leak in evince?

2008-07-31 Thread Stephen Cradock
As the original submitter I can confirm that the memory problems are no
longer apparent in Intrepid - evince 2.23.5, libpoppler 0.8.4 (cairo).
Large page-scanned documents open and page fine, as far as I can see,
without eating memory to any noticeable extent.

Thanks everyone for getting this fixed!

[Bug 298611] Re: ia32-libs 2.7ubuntu1 missing libuuid.so.1, breaks flash

2008-11-29 Thread Stephen Cradock
I am glad this is being dealt with. As someone who reported the failure
of wine, I am concerned that it is being assumed that the flashplugin
failure and the wine failure are related, just because both give error
messages about libuuid.so.1 not being found.

In fact, libuuid.so.1 is in its correct place (/lib/libuuid.so.1), as
far as I can see. In any case, this is nothing to do with ia32-libs - it
is installed in its own package, libuuid1. Or does ia32-libs have
another library of the same name?

The wine failure does seem to relate to ia32-libs - probably because the
newer (Jaunty) version is missing some alsa libraries. As others have
found, using the latest Intrepid version of ia32-libs restores wine's
ability to run at all. I don't use sound in wine, so I don't know
whether that aspect is working now.

For Flash, removing flashplugin-nonfree and swfdec-mozilla, then
installing the 64-bit flash player 10.0.d20 from Adobe fixed it for me.

[Bug 314205] Re: [Xpress 200M] wine screen updates faulty in Jaunty

2009-05-13 Thread Stephen Cradock
Thanks for getting back to this one. I have added the following two
Option lines in xorg.conf, and they allow me to use EXA:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option "MigrationHeuristic""smart"
Option "EXANoComposite""Yes"
EndSection

This works in Jaunty and also in Karmic - Wine screen updates complete
correctly even when compiz is running.

Hope that helps

[Bug 314205] Re: wine screen updates faulty in Jaunty

2009-01-30 Thread Stephen Cradock
Is anything happening? Wine and programs running under Wine in Jaunty
continue to behave strangely. Some of the strange behavior (progressive
failure of the Wine "desktop" window to update correctly, leaving blue
patches in place of card images in Spider, for instance) does appear to
be due to some interaction or failure of interaction with compiz, but
even without compiz effects enabled Wine still doesn't feel as if it's
working right under Jaunty. The problems with wineconfig and with
browsing "C:" seem to have been fixed.

Strong contrast with Intrepid - Wine and programs in it work fine in
Intrepid whether compiz is enabled or not.

Running (for instance)wine spider.exe in a terminal raises some alsa
configuration errors, but no helpful terminal output.

Any chance of some workaround short of turning off compiz?

[Bug 388271] [NEW] xserver-xorg-video-ati update breaks suspend/resume

2009-06-16 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I noticed a failure of Karmic to boot to login after an update a couple
of weeks ago, and could not recover the install. After re-installing
(upgrade from a working Jaunty install) I found that boot-up worked
correctly, but I could not resume after suspending, even with --quirk-
none set to true in hal, which has worked in the past. The pm-
suspend.log showed normal suspend sequence, but in place of the resume
sequence there was a block of @@@. in reverse video. The
screen remained black, and the only way to recover was to power off -
exactly the same as the earlier failure to boot, so I suspect a similar
cause.

I checked that removing the new versions of xserver-xorg-video-ati and
xserver-xorg-video-radeon (1:6.12.2-2ubuntu1) and re-installing the
latest versions from jaunty (6.12.1-0ubuntu2) eliminated the problem.

Attached is the pm-suspend.log from the failed resume - note that this
file will NOT open in gedit, as it contains binary material; "cat" does
not show the binary material at the end of the file; I have found that
"less" displays the contents in an understandable way. The corresponding
log from the successful resume after installing the older drivers has a
normal suspend sequence followed by a normal resume sequence.

[Bug 384405] [NEW] Karmic fails to boot after update 06/06/2009

2009-06-06 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

After accepting updates to Karmic Koala 64-bit (including kernel upgrade
to 2.6.30-8-generic) on 06/06/2009 the re-boot process hangs with black
screen after most or all of the normal boot progress reports. Does not
reach log-in window.

Probably not a kernel error, because the previous kernel now also fails
at the same point. The logs contain much "binary" garbage, but kern.log
is apparently normal until the following:

sc-laptop kernel: (109.8833462] gvfs-gdu-volume [4019]: segfault at 18
ip 7f8465a102f1 sp 7fff961225b0 error 4 in libgdu.so.0.0.0
[7f8465a05000+22000]

after that the system clock switches to a much higher time, and there
are a few more messages including a segfault in nautilus before pages of
binary, interspersed with dumps of system messages in many languages
about time zones, etc.

Booting into recovery mode and asking to fix broken packages offers to
remove console-tools, but also wants to install 60 other
packages

[Bug 326158] Re: Root terminal doesn't start

2009-04-17 Thread Stephen Cradock
Confirming the symptoms - Jaunty up to date (April 17). Root terminal
command from menu fails to start terminal. Trying the command from a
terminal gives the "Failed to contact the GConf daemon. exiting."
message. Have confirmed that the xterminal-emulator script passes no
@args to gnome-terminal if run without gksu, and opens a normal terminal
correctly. If run with gksu there are also no @args, but the GConf
daemon error message appears after the call to "exec gnome-terminal".

This suggests that the error is actually in gnome-terminal, rather than
in x-terminal-emulator.

Checking the GConf settings for gnome-terminal doesn't immediately
suggest what might be wrong, and if the error is a failure to contact
GConf daemon the settings shouldn't matter.

[Bug 314205] Re: wine screen updates faulty in Jaunty

2009-04-19 Thread Stephen Cradock
I believe I have found the problem. The "empty" xorg.conf results in my
case in the video driver (radeon) trying to use exa acceleration, not
uxa, which I believe is the new default. Adding the Option "AccelMethod"
"XAA" line to the device section removes the problem. I haven't tried
explicitly requesting "UXA" instead - maybe that would work.

[Bug 373077] [NEW] no Sharing Options in Nautilus pop-up menu

2009-05-06 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-share

In Karmic, the pop-up (context) menu for a folder shown in Nautilus does
not include the Sharing Options item.

This is apparently because the nautilus-share package is not yet
available for the current Nautilus (1:2.26.2-3ubuntu1), and so is not
installed. Synaptic reports that installing the Jaunty version of
nautilus-share (0.7.2-5) would entail removal of essential programs,
including Nautilus itself.

Is this useful package expected to return?

Interesting! Installing with "sudo apt-get install nautilus-share"
generated no warnings and removed no packages. The n-share package is
now installed and working. Not sure why Synaptic wouldn't do it
yesterday, unless some other package has been updated meanwhile.

Just to be sure, I removed nautilus-share using Synaptic and then re-
installed it using Synaptic. No warnings, no packages removed. All fine!
One out of the dozens of packages updated in the last day or so must
have been blocking nautilus-share, and is now compatible, I suppose.

Thanks for the quick response, and for the useful package!

[Bug 314205] Re: wine screen updates faulty in Jaunty

2009-04-21 Thread Stephen Cradock
Further checking: comparing Intrepid and Jaunty on same machine -

both using radeon OS drivers, most recent versions in each case;

Intrepid - specifying either XAA or EXA in Device section of xorg.conf
(or leaving no option specified) gives normal behavior in the specific
situation I described - Compiz or metacity+compositing as window
manager, spider.exe running in Wine.

Jaunty - specifiying XAA gives normal behavior as above. Specifying EXA
or leaving no option specified gives the faulty screen-redraws
originally described.

Please let me know if any further information is required/helpful; it is
disconcerting to send the info asked for and see the bug still marked
Incomplete.

[Bug 236360] [NEW] evolution requires spamassassin

2008-05-31 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution (which I don't use) is installed as part of the Intrepid
package; it now requires spamassassin and gnome-pilot. These were NOT
required in 8.04. Can this change of policy be re-considered, please? I
don't want un-necessary daemons (spamd) running in my machine.

It is also extremely difficult to convince update-manager to let go of
the idea that these packages are required. Once they have been auto-
installed they continue to show up in the update-manager list, even
after evolution, evolution-data-server and evolution-plugins have been
removed, AND spamassassin and spamc, gnome-pilot and gnome-pilot-
conduits, and so on...

I am getting the feeling that I am no longer free to decide what
packages I shall run in my machine.

[Bug 236360] Re: evolution requires spamassassin

2008-06-02 Thread Stephen Cradock
Sebastian,

Thanks for the explanation - glad to know that it was an intentional
change between Hardy and Intrepid.

However, I am afraid there is still a problem. Having been using the
package system for over a year now, I do expect it itself to remain
stable and reliable, and I have found out various ways to get out of
dependency problems. This one has me stumped, though.

Here's the problem, in a nutshell: evolution can be removed; evolution-
dataserver-common cannot, as gnome-panel and gnome-applets depend on it.
In between there is evolution-dataserver, and that's where I have
problems. I can remove it, and remove spamassassin and spamc, gnome-
pilot and gnome-pilot-conduits. Syanptic allows this; nothing else is
removed; there are no warnings, nothing breaks. BUT as soon as (any of)
those five packages are removed, update-manager flashes on a
notification that they have to be re-installed.

I've tried updating, upgrading, removing, in various orders. Nothing
leaves me in a stable state without those five packages. Somewhere the
update-manager system knows that they HAVE to be installed.

THAT is what I'm concerned about, and what I would like fixed if at all
possible. I've tried looking at the dependencies of all five packages,
without seeing any logical reason why they all have to be installed. I
suspect it's a fairly deep inverse dependency problem, where a system
library like libc6 has been marked as depending on them, rather than the
other way round.

[Bug 236360] Re: evolution requires spamassassin

2008-06-02 Thread Stephen Cradock
I have at last tracked down the glitch. It seems that yet another
package designed to work with evolution, nautilus-sendto, has evolution
as a recommends, and evolution has spamassassin and gnome-pilot as
recommends, so the update-manager sees the 2-step connection and keeps
flagging spamassassin as needed, plus the other packages

I took Sebastian's hint and used one of the more advanced aptitude
commands - aptitude why spamassassin.

So now I have removed nautilus-sendto my system no longer demands
spamassassin.

[Bug 237540] [NEW] apt fails to update

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 216104 ***

As a user, I would challenge the Duplicate status as reported by
Sebastian. I have read the comments on the so-called duplicate (#216104)
and do not see any reason to call this a duplicate. It may well derive
from the same underlying problem(s) in Nautilus and/or GVS, but it
differs crucially in the following ways:

1) This bug is reported in Intrepid. For me at least, it is NEW to Intrepid;
Hardy works fine at opening Windows shares through nautilus.
2) This bug is about the actual process of opening a share; #216104 is a
failure to setup a share in advance of connecting.

Please re-open this bug, or give Intrepid-testers some assurance that it
is actually being worked on.

[Bug 249733] Re: can't open windows share icon

2008-07-22 Thread Stephen Cradock
Yes, this is an Intrepid bug. There was a conversation on the Intrepid
testing forum, and the bug report came out of that, as I understand.

I am running Intrepid up-to-date on an HP laptop, with a Windows Vista
machine on the same network. Samba connection is fine using Hardy, shows
the symptoms specified in the original bug report (exactly) under
Intrepid.

The Windows server opens up in nautilus (Places > Network > [server]),
but trying to open a specific share gives the dbus error

{DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: Mountpoint Already
registered}

though an icon appears on the desktop. Either clicking on that, or
trying again in nautilus generates the same error message.

[Bug 249733] Re: can't open windows share icon

2008-07-22 Thread Stephen Cradock
Now I have gvfs-mount available: fails the first time, saying that the
Mountpoint is already registered (that's the one on the desktop, set up
through Nautilus).

Unmounting that (Right-click, Unmount) allows me to re-mount it using
gvfs-mount. The desktop icon reappears. BUT trying to open it gives the
identical dbus error message. This suggests to me that it is a gvfs
error, since I am not (consciously) invoking nautilus in this sequence.

[Bug 249733] Re: can't open windows share icon

2008-07-22 Thread Stephen Cradock
Thanks. There is an error message using gvfs-ls, saying the specified
location is not mounted.

I began with the share icon on the desktop; gvfs-ls gave the error
message.

I right-clicked the icon and chose Unmount to remove it from the
desktop.

gvfs-ls gave the same error message.

I used gvfs-mount to mount the location again; the icon reappeared on
the desktop.

gvfs-ls gave the same error message.

So samba "sees" the share (smbtree, smbclient) and smbclient can browse
inside it, but gvfs-ls cannot, getting an error message that it is not
mounted.

As mattismyname said, I can browse the contents of the share using the
location ~/.gvfs/"share on server".

Hope that helps to track this down

[Bug 249733] Re: can't open windows share icon

2008-07-22 Thread Stephen Cradock
More testing with gvfs-ls:

I can browse the server using gvfs-ls smb://server

That shows the expected list of shares, including Public, which the one
I have been trying to connect to, and another one called Amazon. Amazon
has not been "touched" - I haven't tried to connect using nautilus OR
gvfs, or even samba, today. I did note that the shares were given
initial capitals, so i checked Public as opposed to public, but still
the same error.

The last test was to try to connect to Amazon using gvfs-mount (which
does NOT return an error) and gvfs-ls, which does.

So it looks as if there is some failure in gvfs to properly "mount" a
share that results in it i) appearing to be mounted, and ii) being
inaccessible to gvfs-ls.

[Bug 241139] Re: Intrepid Ibex: Cannot access samba share "Unable to mount location"

2008-07-23 Thread Stephen Cradock
There is a duplicate bug #249733, which I have marked as a dup of this
one. The error seems to be independent of nautilus, as it occurs when
using gvfs-mount and not invoking nautilus at all.

The use of gvfs-mount smb://server/share appears to mount the share - it
appears in the nautilus mount list, and an icon is placed on the
desktop. However, attempts to access the share fail both using nautilus
and using gvfs-ls, showing that this is an error in gvfs, which is not
allowing the "mounted" share to be accessed.

The share is accessible using ~/.gvfs/"share on server"

Hope this additional information helps squash this very annoying bug in
Intrepid, running on an HP Pavilion laptop, not in a virtual machine.

Everything works correctly in Hardy on the same machine, btw. This is
new to Intrepid.

[Bug 264571] Re: shutdown crashes, leaving Intrepid running but stuck

2008-09-15 Thread Stephen Cradock
Thanks for the suggestions, Nullack. I had just decided to try starting
up without usplash when your email arrived!

So I decided I should do as you suggested and upgrade consolekit first.
The user switcher upgraded too, so I was then using the latest versions
of both. Didn't help - same crash. MUST be usplash!

So I removed the splash from the /boot/grub/menu.lst line corresponding
to the newest Intrepid with 2.6.27-3 kernel, and rebooted. (Tried
editing the line during boot, but the change wasn't effective, for some
reason).

That did it! No crash on Restart from the user switcher Haven't
checked all the other scenarios, but they will probably work fine now.

Now I have a bug in usplash, on my system with 64-bit Intrepid running
on an AMD 3200 cpu with or without compiz using the ati driver and
Radeon Express 200M (5955) graphics. Could it be an inappropriate frame-
buffer or the wrong vga mode? The usplash works fine on start-up, so
that seems unlikely.

Anyway, thanks a million for the help. How do I mark this bug solved?

2008-09-16 Thread Stephen Cradock
Well, that's interesting - I tried specifying vga=791 in the Intrepid
2.6.27-3 boot stanza, and it doesn't display any text during boot. The
backlight stays on, the HD light flicks on and off as normal, but
nothing appears on the screen until after the backlight goes off and the
greeter starts to load.

When I shutdown, the screen has a garbled and static color pattern
(horizontal layers) until the re-boot sequence starts with the CD-drive
click.

Looks as if vga=791 is not acceptable.., and maybe there's a problem
in whatever the default mode is.

Could we users have some information about what the program actually

[Bug 264571] Re: shutdown crashes, leaving Intrepid running but stuck

2008-09-19 Thread Stephen Cradock
Thanks for the pointer. I've read through the messages under bug 246269,
and I'm not very much reassured.

As far as I can see, the conclusion is that Intrepid has been "switched"
to a new frame-buffer, uvesafb, that doesn't work as it is supposed to,
at least in part because the v86d supplied in the Ubuntu repositories
was compiled against the wrong ?libc (and wasn't even included in the
default install, despite being needed for the new uvesafb.

The solution that presents itself to me as a user would be to switch
back to vesafb until a working set-up with uvesafb can be provided, or
to provide a version of v86d that does work. I know that an alpha
version is a work in progress, but having a system that works does seem
rather a basic requirement.

I seem to be one of the lucky ones; now that I have discovered that my
original problems were due to a usplash crash (thanks to your help) I
can boot up without usplash and log-in, and shut down without crashing.
Other people seem to be suffering worse problems, which prevent them
from booting at all in some cases - all because uvesafb is not working
correctly.

For the record, having installed v86d, I am still getting the error -22
failure to load VBE, or whatever, at the start of the boot sequence.
uvesafb shows up in lsmod, but does not seem to be active. As others
have reported, modprobe uvesafb generates an error if I try to include
the mode parameter.

[Bug 264571] Re: shutdown crashes, leaving Intrepid running but stuck

2008-09-11 Thread Stephen Cradock
I'm disappointed to see no response after a week!

The problem continues; it is specific to the 2.6.27 kernel (2.6.27-2 and
2.6.27-3).

Hardy with kernel 2.6.24-19 and Intrepid with kernel 2.6.26-5 shutdown
or reboot correctly.

Trawling logs shows no entries after "sc-laptop exiting on signal 15" in
messages and syslog.

Trying "sudo shutdown -r now > restart.txt" generates an empty file
restart.txt

[Bug 241139] Re: Intrepid Ibex: Cannot access samba share "Unable to mount location"

2008-08-06 Thread Stephen Cradock
since the recent updates to gvfs (Intrepid, 64-bit) the Windows shares
are now shown in Nautilus, but attempting to open them in Nautilus
apparently fails, bringing up the password dialog twice; clicking OK the
second time gives the dbus error message as above.

gvfs-ls smb://server/ lists the shares correctly, but sudo gvfs-mount
smb://server/share returns the message:

Error mounting location: volume doesn't implement mount.

After this, gvfs-ls smb://server/share reports

Error: the specified location is not mounted.

The "share on server" entry does not appear in ~/.gvfs/

After attempting (and apparently failing) to mount using Nautilus, the
"share on server" folder DOES appear in ~/.gvfs, and gvfs-ls
smb://server/share lists the contents of the share correctly.

Hope this helps someone to track this down...

[Bug 258641] Re: jockey does not suggest fglrx driver in intrepid

2008-09-20 Thread Stephen Cradock
I am getting the same error (jockey not offering to install fglrx, even
though it is installed in synaptic) in Hardy. In this case the default
xorg.conf seems to use the basic Mesa driver, not the newer DRI300 ati
driver, and performance is abysmal. I have re-enabled the DRI300 open-
source version, and performance is improved, but I would like to use
fglrx. There seems to be something going on - can we re-open the bug,
please, and try to get to the root of this?

I have been spending most of my time in Intrepid, but I did expect that
Hardy (AKA LTS) would continue to allow me to choose to use the fglrx
driver if I wished

[Bug 231488] [NEW] partimage leaves incorrect size

2008-05-17 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: partimage

"restoring" a file-system from a smaller partition into a larger one (to
get a clone of a working install for upgrading) leaves the partition
marked as having the total size of the source partition, rather than its
correct (larger) size.

As an example, I made a partimage backup of a Hardy install (3.3GB) on a
9.7GB partition. On making a clone from this onto a 19.5GB partition, I
found that the partition was now labeled (somewhere) as having a total
size of 9.7GB. As a consequence, df /dev/hda4 now reported used space as
3.4GB, space available as 5.8GB; nautilus and file properties reported
3.9GB used, 5.8GB available.

The workaround I found was to re-size the new partition in GParted,
which correctly saw its total size as 19.5GiB, but reported the amount
of used space as 13.8GiB, presumably by combining 5.8GiB available with
the correct total size. After shrinking the partition to 18.5GiB in
GParted both GParted and df (as well as Nautilus) reported correct and
self-consistent sizes. Growing the partition back up to 19.5GiB was also
successful.

I don't think it should be necessary to do this, though - can partimage
be told to leave the total size of the partition alone, or is there
another simpler fix?

[Bug 235652] [NEW] spamassassin required by Update manager

2008-05-28 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

I am testing Intrepid, using a clone of an existing 8.04 64-bit install, with
the sources list updated to Intrepid.
Although my initial install did not include spamassassin and spamc, since I
have no use for them (I use ONLY web-mail services), they both showed up as
Automatically Installed in Synaptic, and Update manager insists on updating
them, and re-installs them if I remove them.

I don't like this; is it a new intended behavior? I don't see why Ubuntu
should require me to run "protective" services (like Windows does) if I
decide I don't want or need them.

Please fix!!

[Bug 252724] Re: fglrx fails to load with 2.6.24-20 kernel in 8.04

The failure to load fglrx occurs at the line

drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address).

instead of the normal

The address in question is given as /dev/dri/card0 following the successful

Kernel 24-20 then reports

[Bug 241139] Re: Intrepid Ibex: Cannot access samba share "Unable to mount location"

2008-08-18 Thread Stephen Cradock
I get this on un-secured shares.

I am puzzled that samba has been updated today (August 18th) without any
apparent change in the situation. It seems that this is not a samba bug,
at any rate.

Is this a gvfs bug? Is it a seahorse bug (as suggested above by fishor)?
Or is it something else? It is certainly, for me at least, unique to
Intrepid - the same machines connect just fine using hardy.

zoidberg - that's right - you need to run gvfs-mount smb://server/share
to get the folder to appear in ~/.gvfs

Once it is there you can cd into it and see, and copy, files. It still
won't open using nautilus, though there is an icon on the desktop.

[Bug 259867] Re: [PAM] Unable to login: Cannot make/remove an entry for the specified session

2008-08-21 Thread Stephen Cradock
I've edited the common-session file, and got the updates installed. It
all works fine.

BUT - it seems to me I should be able to revert to the original common-
session file and not get the Authentification failed error. Doesn't work
that way - putting the pam_deny.so line back into common-session brings
up the Authentification failed error again.

I've tried following Steve's suggestion to remove the existing common-
session and run pam-auth-update --force, but it fails saying it can't
stat common-session - not surprising, as I removed it.

What next? Do we need the line "session requisite pam_deny.so"
in common-session, or was redundant?

[Bug 259867] Re: [PAM] Unable to login: Cannot make/remove an entry for the specified session

2008-08-21 Thread Stephen Cradock
Mario - thanks for the pointer - those are presumably spare copies of
the working files in /etc/pam.d/

But you're right - the common-session file in the /usr/share/pam set
doesn't have the pam-deny.so line - it has pam-permit.so instead. I
checked the common-auth files in /etc/pam.d/ and /usr/share/pam/, and
they are the way common-session used to be - a line "auth requisite
pam_deny.so" and a line "auth required pam_permit.so".

The header of the files in /usr/share/pam/ refers to pam 1.0.1-4, by the
way, while the files in /etc/pam.d/ refer to pam 1.0.1-3.

It looks as if this is a new paradigm being implemented on the wing, as
it were I'm sure we'll get it all right soon. The block labels
$session_primary and $session_additional look as if they will be new in
version 1.0.1-4.

Wonder what would happen if I tried using those versions with 1.0.1-3
installed

[Bug 323825] [NEW] firefox crashed when trying to play a video

2009-01-31 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Some time ago I started using libflashplayer.so to handle flash movies
without nspluginwrapper. This worked in Jaunty until recently, when I
noticed that Firefox would crash on opening any page with a flash movie
in it - news pages like msn.com, msnbc.com.

I can re-install flashplugin-nonfree, which downloads the flash player
from Adobe, but also installs nspluginwrapper, and don't get the
crashes. Is there an updated libflashplayer.so that could be used
instead? It seemed that some real progress was being made by adobe in
providing a flashplayer (64-bit, even) that didn't need nspluginwrapper.
Have we lost this progress?

[Bug 314205] [NEW] wine screen updates faulty in Jaunty

2009-01-05 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

After upgrading to Jaunty, I experienced the ia32libs problems reported
earlier due to the missing libuuid. This showed up in wine as well as
other programs. The ia32libs problem has now been addressed, but wine
still behaves strangely.

The wine window opens, but screen updates are jerky and slow, and (in
spider) the cards progressively fail to redraw as the game progresses,
leaving black holes in place of the card faces.

 uname -a
Linux sc-laptop 2.6.28-4-generic #6-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 1 22:53:33 UTC 2009
x86_64 GNU/Linux

wine 1.0.1-0ubuntu4

xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.9.0.91-1ubuntu4

compiz is installed and running. Without compiz (metacity as the window
manager) wine behaves correctly.

with compiz turned back on, I cannot access Wine Drive C:, open
Notepad.exe or spider.exe in Wine, open Wine Config, or get anything but
an empty Wine window.

[Bug 314205] Re: wine screen updates faulty in Jaunty

2009-01-06 Thread Stephen Cradock
Thanks, Scott. They play together just fine in Intrepid, at least on my
machine (same one as above).

I've tried turning off various effects, but haven't found a sub-set that
restores Wine to normality in Jaunty. Now that Compiz seems to be "on"
by default it would be good if Wine was working correctly.

[Bug 315334] [NEW] system restart applet fails in jaunty

2009-01-08 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

After an update using Update manager the System Restart Required
notification appears. Clicking on the applet opens the usual system
restart dialog, but clicking on the Restart Now button has no effect
except that the dialog box closes. The system does not terminate.

Restarting from the Switcher menu works as normal.

[Bug 252023] Re: configure display applet crashes X in intrepid

2008-12-21 Thread Stephen Cradock
Thanks - I understand the position. In retrospect I could have saved the
relevant log files after the crash and been more helpful, but that
didn't happen. From my position, that could have been avoided if the
delay in asking for the files had been shorter - two months (09-01 to
11-12) is a long time to keep crash logs, especially as I had moved on
and simply decided not to use the buggy applet again.

[Bug 314205] Re: wine screen updates faulty in Jaunty

2009-02-08 Thread Stephen Cradock
That looks as if it switches window manager to metacity - thus turning
off compiz.

If there is a general problem with Wine in jaunty, let's talk about it
and help to get it fixed.

If there is a general problem with compiz in Jaunty, ditto.

If the problem is some esoteric interaction between them, ditto.

I'm sorry if my simple-minded approach is offending anyone - I thought
the purpose of testing a new pre-release was to spot little niggles like
this so the developers could fix them before the final release. I've
drawn attention to this one - it's real, it's reproducible, at least on
my machine, and it's minor - not really a show-stopper.

If anyone needs more information about what's going on they could:

a) ask me for logs, etc

b) try running both wine and compiz in Jaunty and see if they get the
same effects as I've described.

Or just ignore it, in which case I will find Jaunty less satisfactory
than Intrepid, where wine and compiz work together just fine.

[Bug 314205] Re: wine screen updates faulty in Jaunty

2009-02-09 Thread Stephen Cradock
Further information:

I get the same errors in screen re-drawing in Wine even with compiz
disabled, i.e. using the "Normal" setting in Visual Effects tab of the
Appearance Preferences. This suggests to me that the errors occur with
any window manager that tries to use compositing, including metacity.

Once I reset the Visual Effects setting to "None", which I believe uses
metacity without compositing, I get normal screen re-drawing in Wine.

I'm using amd64, kernel 2.6.28-7-generic, and the open-source ati/radeon
drivers xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-video-radeon, on an old
hp pavilion with the Radeon Xpress 200M 5955 chipset. In Jaunty the
drivers are version 1:6.10.0-1ubuntu1. I'm attaching the glxinfo output
for the situation when Wine is redrawing correctly.

[Bug 241139] Re: Intrepid Ibex: Cannot access samba share "Unable to mount location"

2008-08-29 Thread Stephen Cradock
Nice try - doesn't work for me. The script runs and leaves me with a
mounted share icon, but doesn't open Nautilus. Trying to open the share
by double-clicking the desktop share icon leads to the original error
message - already mounted.

[Bug 241139] Re: Intrepid Ibex: Cannot access samba share "Unable to mount location"

2008-08-29 Thread Stephen Cradock
My apologies! After some messing around it DOES work for me.

At first running the script gave me the mount, but not the Nautilus
window. I put in two extra lines to 'echo "$SMB"' and 'echo "$DIR"', and
it worked.

Then I commented out (#) the two extra lines and it still worked
Then I removed the extra lines and it still works.!

I suspect timing - the gvfs-mount call may not generate the
"$HOME/.gvfs/share on server" entry fast enough, so that Nautilus fails
(silently) because the directory given doesn't appear to exist. But
that's another bug..
