Public bug reported:

Running Intrepid new install on an HP Pavilion laptop with ATI Radeon
Xpress 200M and ati/radeon driver. The new applet Configure Display
Settings appeared in today's updates. I tried it out, and selected the
"Rotate" option button. On choosing "Left" the display vanished, and
returned me to the login greeter. Choosing any available session except
Failsafeterminal and trying to log in again returns to the login greeter
after an X crash.

The logs contain the message "gdm: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler:
Fatal X error: Restarting X :0"

but of course X never does restart properly.

I get no help from xfix or any other option; the bare-bones xorg.conf is
of no help. How do I recover from this error without re-installing?
