[Bug 366737] Re: Complete System Lockup following Screensaver then Monitor Power Down

2009-06-24 Thread Roy
I'm still not 100% sure if the screen saver is the problem. I think
heat *may* be a contributing factor. I cleaned the fins of the CPU
cooler (small amount of dust) and applied a new coating of heat paste.
I also cut back on the BOINC CPU usage. This seems to have helped, but
not completely eliminated the problem. I installed Jaunty on another
computer (Dell GX270 2.8 Ghz P-4, Intel on-board video) and have had no
problems with it.

[Bug 366737] Re: Complete System Lockup following Screensaver then Monitor Power Down

2009-05-17 Thread Roy
I am having the same problem with the i386 release and a Matrox G550 video
card. I do not experience lock up unless the computer is idle for a long
period of time - >5 hours. The problem will always re-occur overnight, during
which time only BOINC is running. After lock up, the keyboard and mouse have
no effect (though it is a wireless mouse and the connection indicater flashes)
and only a power reset will restart the computer. I will try to get the files
you requested in the morning after the next lockup.
Changing settings in Screensaver Preferences and Power Management doesn't seem
to have a noticeable effect on the time required before lock-up.

[Bug 366737] Re: Complete System Lockup following Screensaver then Monitor Power Down

2009-05-18 Thread Roy
I changed Screen Saver Prefs to -
 - Regard as idle after 2 hours
 - Activate Screen Saver : unchecked
 - Lock Screen : unchecked

Power Management -
 - Put computer to sleep : never
 - Put display to sleep : never

After 5.5 - 6 hours (according to BOINC which only records it's active time)
the computer locked up. No screen saver activated but I could not ping the box
and the keyboard/mouse had no effect.
I tried to restart with a power reset. The first try failed at the point the
busy (circular) mouse pointer appeared. On the second try there was a routine
check of the drive, then the computer came up normally.

I did the killall -9 gnome-screensaver, then created /tmp/gs.log as per your
instructions to David.
I am attaching it and Xorg.0.log however the ~/.xsession-errors file does not
exist.

I hope this is of some help

[Bug 366737] Re: Complete System Lockup following Screensaver then Monitor Power Down

2009-05-19 Thread Roy
Next try - Enabled ACPID & APMD which were both disabled - Enabled the Proposed
Repository and did the updates.
After about 2 hours the screen came alive with mouse movement. After about 8
hours the computer was locked up requiring a power off/on reset. The computer
booted without any error or problem. Do you have any suggestion as to what to
try next?

Thanks

[Bug 278730] [NEW] Network Settings crashes when properties button pressed

2008-10-05 Thread Roy
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.10 Beta

According to ps -aux AND xprop | grep WM_CLASS the package or window name
is network-admin, though launchpad does not recognize the name. The title bar
says "Network Settings"
The menu item is System->Administration->Network
A little more consistency in naming could possibly make reporting and finding
bugs easier.

network-admin was not installed by default. After installation it added my
isp's name to 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.1.1.
When trying to correct the aliases for these address network-admin crashed
when the properties button was pressed.

Hello Chris,

Herewith file.  Its a collection of personal, but not particularly
confidential family stuff that has accumulated over the years, just in case
in came in useful, so no fancy macros, formatting or anything  However I
think there are still client files in the dusty archives kept just in case
some inspector or other calls so would need to open them.

Thanks a lot

[Bug 174693] Re: eth0: Dumping tx registers

2008-03-27 Thread Roy
I'm seeing the same issue on Ubuntu 7.10. The problem is reproducable by
generating a significant samba network load with both incoming and
outgoing traffic.

* Using winrar on a client to uncompress a large archive on a samba
share (source and destination both on the share). The network interface
on the server usually goes down within a few minutes.

* Running bittorrent on a client machine, downloading to a samba share.
Running at 10 Mpbs both incoming and outgoing with hundreds of active
connecions seems to triggers the failure within the hour.

The kernel is 2.6.22-14-server, unfortunately I'm not sure what
motherboard/chipset is on that server - I'll be able to check this later
though.

I suppose I could try the Hardy Heron beta release and report back.

I upgraded to Hardy Heron beta yesterday, and have not been able to
crash forcedeth after 20 hours of bashing the network. The too many
iterations message still floods the log though.

[Bug 564034] Re: Panel no longer shows which input method is being used

2010-04-28 Thread Roy
Since Lucid is a long term support version, this problem could hang
around for years. I could possibly see ignoring the problem in a normal
release but this could be a problem for International business and
should be fixed ASAP. As I understand it, LTS releases are there to
encourage business use. This is sending the wrong message.

I think I have tracked this down to a problem with my printer and at
this point would suggest ignoring this bug report. I still have the
problem on the computer I originally reported this for, but have managed
to install on another, very similar computer. I'm not sure yet what is
actually happening. Occasionally the printer is reporting an internal
error during the install but works all right on a different computer.
It's quirky but I am still trying for a definitive answer.

I still get the "not allowed here" message while trying to access bug
470323. I have been trying to install the driver on the Lucid 10.04
release candidate but have had no success. I have 2 versions of the
Samsung Universal Printer Driver that have worked on previous versions
of Ubuntu (all since Hardy). When trying to install, the printer (ML-

is no longer a *** stack smashing detected *** error as originally

[Bug 416660] Re: Could not install Karmic.

2009-09-13 Thread Roy
Just installed Sept. 13 updates. There is some improvement; leaving the
computer sit at the desktop (1 hour) no longer licked up.
Visual effects are set to none:
boinc client works OK.
Disk usage analyzer works OK.
Gimp (without going through everything) works OK.
Open Office Writer - small test file save-shutdown-reload works OK.
Nautilus - failed on setting properties - screen lock up.
Nautilus lockup while browsing files.
Firefox - lockup while trying to move window.
Add/remove - added sysinfo - runs OK.
Add to panel - added 4 weather applets OK. - Closed - Reopened, lockup while
scrolling to add another applet.

Loop:
  Restart - panels display - no icons.  Ctrl+Alt+Delete -> E: Panel not
responding - Reboot Anyway? Yes
move weather applet icons - 3 move OK lockup while trying to move 4th icon.
Restart -> loop

Seems to alternate between starting OK / Displaying panels and lock up.

Sorry out of time, will play more later and let you know what happens,
  Roy

[Bug 416660] Re: Could not install Karmic.

2009-09-15 Thread Roy
Just installed Sept. 15 updates. The update locked up the computer at
'installing new version of config file /etc/cron.d/anacron...
On reboot I received the message 'interrupted dpkg run sudo dpkg --configure
-a'. I ran this and it finished OK.
On restart the system came up in terminal mode (no desktop). I reran sudo
apt-get update/upgrade; nothing happened.
Tried another restart 'sudo shutdown -r now' - no change (no desktop).
Tried an unclean shutdown, which has corrected problems in the past, but no
improvement; still no Desktop.
Tried reinstalling gnome with both apt-get and aptitude which only reinstalled
gnome-themes; still no Desktop.

Since Alpha 6 is due in a couple of days I'll wait for that and hope for some
improvement.

[Bug 432804] Re: Karmic A-6 Errors on boot

2009-09-20 Thread Roy
There was some doubt expressed about the hard drive I was using for the
Karmic install, so just to be sure I bought another drive and installed
Karmic on it. All the errors that were originally there are still there
and unfortunately I can't keep Karmic running long enough to do any
useful testing. Whenever I try to do anything in a graphical window I
get a desktop freeze within 15 seconds to a minute, and almost always if
I try to save any changes. The terminal window *usually* lasts a little
longer, but not more than 2 or 3 minutes if I am actually doing
something in that window.

[Bug 416660] Re: Could not install Karmic.

2009-09-22 Thread Roy
Another oops. I see my first reply did not make it; finger troubles on my part
I presume.
I bought a new drive just to be sure and installed Alpha 6 on it and still had
serious freeze problems. Today I downloaded the Sept. 22 daily build and
installed it. I still have freezes but not quite as often and was able to get
the attached Batchbuffer Dump as described in "Troubleshooting Freezes". The
freeze was caused by opening Add To Panel and moving the thumb up and down a
couple of times. Desktop effects is set to None, but that doesn't seem to be
any different from Normal as far as freezes are concerned. Otherwise it is a
standard fresh install.

I can't seem to access bug 470323 -"not allowed here"- though I have some

printer works fine on that system.
I have just installed Lucid Beta 2 and although I don't get any error messages
I don't get any printing either. This is on the same computer/printer/driver

[Bug 395871] Re: Appearance preferences are being ignored

2010-05-13 Thread Roy
I think my problem is related to this one. I am running 32bit Lucid
10.04 using GNOME 2.30.0 and kernel 2.6.32-22-generic. Since I don't
like the default theme I have changed to Human Clearlooks with no visual
effects. At seemingly random intervals the screen flickers and the
display reverts to the default theme. There are no error messages.
Entering 'Appearance Preferences' shows Human Clearlooks is still
selected. Clicking on another theme then back on Human Clearlooks resets
it but it usually reverts again to the default theme fairly quickly
(within a couple of minutes). Restarting the computer will get it to
stick for a longer period (~day or more). Computer is a Dell GX-280
P-4.

I also have an HP Q6600 quad running the 64bit version of Lucid that has
given no problems.

[Bug 395871] Re: Appearance preferences are being ignored

2010-05-13 Thread Roy
I guess I spoke too soon. Just had the same problem on the HP Q6600 quad
64 bit. This computer has been running properly since installing Lucid
May 1 or 2. The last update was May 12 I believe. Same problem... No
Error message; it just decided it didn't like my choice of theme.

The Dell has had the same problem ever since I installed Lucid at about
the same time, though before the official release I had run the alpha 1,
alpha2 and release candidate on it without seeing this problem

Lucid 10.04, GNOME 2.30.0, kernel 2.6.32-22-generic.

[Bug 416660] Re: Could not install Karmic.

2009-09-08 Thread Roy
I thought that (hard drive problems) could have been the problem, but I
was able to install an older version of Ububtu with no troubles.
Further, I have tried the Alpha 5 desktop release and it would not
install either. I tried the install 6 times and it failed anywhere from
the Alpha warning message to 74% installed; nothing consistent. I then
burned an alternate CD and was able to install from that. However I
received file system errors telling me to run fsck when trying to boot.
fsck came back with exit 4 (did not correct anything). However it did
report the clock time was in the future, but on reaching the desktop,
the clock displays the correct time. The time offset into the future is
the same as the offset from UTC to my time zone so this seems to be a
calculation/display bug. After bypassing the problem and starting the
desktop then shutting off the power (unclean shutdown) the power on
check seems to correct the problem. I have tried this with both ext3
and ext4 formats and it seems to work reliably so I'm guessing that the
error message is wrong. I now get a regular boot to the desktop but
trying to run anything graphical locks up the desktop. The terminal
seems to work for a while but after 15-20 minutes I lose the desktop,
whether I am running anything or it's just sitting untouched. (memory
leak/stack problem???) I installed the BOINC client and connected to
the server remotely from another computer and it keeps running in the
background (I can check it from the other computer) even after I lose
direct access to the Karmic computer, so the problem seems to be
confined to Gnome.

I'm still playing with this and will let you know if I manage to isolate
anything.

Hi Dylan

I stand corrected... kind of. :o)

I haven't installed Ubuntu from the Desktop icon since my first install
of Feisty and I forgot that what you say *is* possible until I was
reminded by Colin's reply.
The only thing I can think of in this case is to set a flag depending on
where the install was started from, then displaying one of 2 slides with
or without the "explore" line. If this proves to be too time consuming a
fix my feeling is that it would be better to drop the line altogether.
>From my experience, that may or may not be typical, the person most
likely to use this feature is a first time user. Since the explore only
works from the desktop install icon, and then only if a person's
computer is fast enough, there is too much room for confusion that could
poison a first impression of Ubuntu. I think most people will, as I
did, try the Live CD session, then not worry about it after the install
has started.

My 2 cents,
  Roy

P.S.
A possibility is to change the line to something like -
"If you started the install from the Desktop then you can continue
exploring Ubuntu during the install."

2009-09-18 Thread Roy
Public bug reported:

Karmic Alpha 6 boot error messages-
unknown key 'SYMLINK{unique}' in /lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules:3
unknown key 'SYMLINK{unique}' in /lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules:4

The lines in question-
3: -- SUBSYSTEM=="block", SYMLINK{unique}+="block/%M:%m"
4: -- SUBSYSTEM!="block", SYMLINK{unique}+="char/%M:%m"

udev[1045] NAME="%k" is superfluous and breaks kernel supplied names, please
remove from
/lib/udev/rules.d/40-ppc.rules:3 :4 :5
I removed NAME="%k" from these lines and the error messages ceased but I
didn't notice any other change.

can not read '/etc/udev/rules.d/z60_hdparm.rules'
This is a reference to a broken link ->../hdparm.rules (the file hdparm.rules
does not exist)
According to the README in /etc/udev/rules.d this directory should not have
SYMLINKS

[Bug 432815] [NEW] Karmic A-6 Desktop freezes

2009-09-18 Thread Roy
Public bug reported:

This is actually a continuation of bug #416660 filed for Alpha 5.

Performing almost any action in a graphical window will cause the
desktop to freeze. Occasionally the mouse will remain active as far as
cursor movement is concerned, but never (after the freeze) has any
button press/click effect. The main difference I have noticed from
Alpha 5 to 6 is that in Alpha 5 the terminal almost always worked
properly but now has the same lock up problems as other windows. The
lockups also seem to happen sooner (in less time) in Alpha 6. In other
words there seems to have been a regression.

[Bug 416660] Re: Could not install Karmic.

2009-10-02 Thread Roy
Installing the Karmic Beta-

Tried to install 4 times on the Dell GX-270 that I have used previously
and got failures (screen lock up) anywhere from reading the release
notes to 82% installed. So I tried on a GX-280 and voila! success.
This was on the same hard drive that was used during the failures. The
only component I hadn't changed was the DVD drive so I changed that and
tried again with no success on the GX-270. Just as a confirmation I
installed 8.04.3 (I have previously install 8.04.1 & .2 as well as 8.04
Server on this computer) successfully, so the problem is definitely the
install program not liking the GX-270. The only real difference in the
2 computers that I haven't been able to swap between them is the on-
board video. They are both Intel but a slightly different model. The
DX-270 has an Intel 82865G and the DX-280 has an Intel 82915G. Dell
supplies different windoze video drivers but I'm not sure what the
differences are.

[Bug 498158] [NEW] Unable to move message files in Evolution 2.28.1

2009-12-18 Thread ROY
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

With the installation of Ubuntu 9.10, now I use the E-mail clients Evolution

I used Thunderbird before, without problem.

Now, with Evolution, moving a message with the mouse does not work.
So I tried the function File / Move /
The "Select a folder" opens.
I click on the file being considered but nothing happens, the button
Move is grayed out,
I can not move any files

[Bug 1770617] [NEW] Dia-normal crashes when attempting to print using network printer

2018-05-11 Thread Roy
Public bug reported:

When I attempt to print a diagram from dia-normal using one of the
network printers offered by cups, the program crashes in the process of
selecting a printer from the list of available printers.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Start dia, open a diagram
2) Select File->Print
3) Click on a (network) printer in the list of printers
-> Crash

Expected result:
The ability to click the print button and have my diagram roll off the printer.

Actual result:
Dia graphical interface disappears, the following assertion shows up in a
terminal:
*** Error in `dia-normal': double free or corruption (!prev):
0x0285db10 ***

Additional information:
- Disabling the avahi daemon makes this problem disappear without loss of
network printing ability, presumably because our network configuration does not
rely on printer auto-discovery.
- Problems do not occur when printing from e.g. evince.
- But similar problems do exist with the Gimp. Perhaps this is a bug in one of
the libraries used by dia and Gimp (GTK2 print dialogue/back-end problems
solved in GTK3?)
- This bug may be related to bug #1701128, but without access to the logs I am
unable to verify.

Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS

AisleRiot uses .svgz file for card theme. bonded.svg in this package is

Expected

[Bug 940030] Re: rsyslog stops working after logrotate until restarted

2017-08-18 Thread roy
A workaround.

Have/Had the same issue.
As the logrotate is executed by the daily cronjob, I modified
/etc/cron.daily/logrotate to the following:
-
#!/bin/sh

/usr/sbin/logrotate -s /var/lib/logrotate/logrotate.status /etc/logrotate.conf
EXITVALUE=$?
if [ $EXITVALUE != 0 ]; then
/usr/bin/logger -t logrotate "ALERT exited abnormally with [$EXITVALUE]"
fi
/bin/systemctl restart rsyslog
exit 0

And that resolved the issue.
