[Bug 366737] Re: Complete System Lockup following Screensaver then Monitor Power Down
I'm still not 100% sure if the screen saver is the problem. I think heat *may* be a contributing factor. I cleaned the fins of the CPU cooler (small amount of dust) and applied a new coating of heat paste. I also cut back on the BOINC CPU usage. This seems to have helped, but not completely eliminated the problem. I installed Jaunty on another computer (Dell GX270 2.8 Ghz P-4, Intel on-board video) and have had no problems with it. [Bug 366737] Re: Complete System Lockup following Screensaver then Monitor Power Down
I am having the same problem with the i386 release and a Matrox G550 video card. I do not experience lock up unless the computer is idle for a long period of time - >5 hours. The problem will always re-occur overnight, during which time only BOINC is running. After lock up, the keyboard and mouse have no effect (though it is a wireless mouse and the connection indicater flashes) and only a power reset will restart the computer. I will try to get the files you requested in the morning after the next lockup. Changing settings in Screensaver Preferences and Power Management doesn't seem to have a noticeable effect on the time required before lock-up. [Bug 366737] Re: Complete System Lockup following Screensaver then Monitor Power Down
I changed Screen Saver Prefs to - - Regard as idle after 2 hours - Activate Screen Saver : unchecked - Lock Screen : unchecked Power Management - - Put computer to sleep : never - Put display to sleep : never After 5.5 - 6 hours (according to BOINC which only records it's active time) the computer locked up. No screen saver activated but I could not ping the box and the keyboard/mouse had no effect. I tried to restart with a power reset. The first try failed at the point the busy (circular) mouse pointer appeared. On the second try there was a routine check of the drive, then the computer came up normally. I did the killall -9 gnome-screensaver, then created /tmp/gs.log as per your instructions to David. I am attaching it and Xorg.0.log however the ~/.xsession-errors file does not exist. [Bug 174693] Re: eth0: Dumping tx registers
I'm seeing the same issue on Ubuntu 7.10. The problem is reproducable by generating a significant samba network load with both incoming and outgoing traffic. * Using winrar on a client to uncompress a large archive on a samba share (source and destination both on the share). The network interface on the server usually goes down within a few minutes. * Running bittorrent on a client machine, downloading to a samba share. Running at 10 Mpbs both incoming and outgoing with hundreds of active connecions seems to triggers the failure within the hour. The kernel is 2.6.22-14-server, unfortunately I'm not sure what motherboard/chipset is on that server - I'll be able to check this later though. I suppose I could try the Hardy Heron beta release and report back. -- eth0: Dumping tx registers https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/174693 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Just installed Sept. 13 updates. There is some improvement; leaving the computer sit at the desktop (1 hour) no longer licked up. Visual effects are set to none: boinc client works OK. Disk usage analyzer works OK. Gimp (without going through everything) works OK. Open Office Writer - small test file save-shutdown-reload works OK. Nautilus - failed on setting properties - screen lock up. Nautilus lockup while browsing files. Firefox - lockup while trying to move window. Add/remove - added sysinfo - runs OK. Add to panel - added 4 weather applets OK. - Closed - Reopened, lockup while scrolling to add another applet. Loop: Restart - panels display - no icons. Ctrl+Alt+Delete -> E: Panel not responding - Reboot Anyway? Yes move weather applet icons - 3 move OK lockup while trying to move 4th icon. [Bug 416660] Re: Could not install Karmic.
Another oops. I see my first reply did not make it; finger troubles on my part I presume. I bought a new drive just to be sure and installed Alpha 6 on it and still had serious freeze problems. Today I downloaded the Sept. 22 daily build and installed it. I still have freezes but not quite as often and was able to get the attached Batchbuffer Dump as described in "Troubleshooting Freezes". The freeze was caused by opening Add To Panel and moving the thumb up and down a couple of times. Desktop effects is set to None, but that doesn't seem to be any different from Normal as far as freezes are concerned. Otherwise it is a standard fresh install. [Bug 395871] Re: Appearance preferences are being ignored
I think my problem is related to this one. I am running 32bit Lucid 10.04 using GNOME 2.30.0 and kernel 2.6.32-22-generic. Since I don't like the default theme I have changed to Human Clearlooks with no visual effects. At seemingly random intervals the screen flickers and the display reverts to the default theme. There are no error messages. Entering 'Appearance Preferences' shows Human Clearlooks is still selected. Clicking on another theme then back on Human Clearlooks resets it but it usually reverts again to the default theme fairly quickly (within a couple of minutes). Restarting the computer will get it to stick for a longer period (~day or more). Computer is a Dell GX-280 P-4. I also have an HP Q6600 quad running the 64bit version of Lucid that has given no problems. -- Appearance preferences are being ignored https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395871 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 416660] Re: Could not install Karmic.
I thought that (hard drive problems) could have been the problem, but I was able to install an older version of Ububtu with no troubles. Further, I have tried the Alpha 5 desktop release and it would not install either. I tried the install 6 times and it failed anywhere from the Alpha warning message to 74% installed; nothing consistent. I then burned an alternate CD and was able to install from that. However I received file system errors telling me to run fsck when trying to boot. fsck came back with exit 4 (did not correct anything). However it did report the clock time was in the future, but on reaching the desktop, the clock displays the correct time. The time offset into the future is the same as the offset from UTC to my time zone so this seems to be a calculation/display bug. After bypassing the problem and starting the desktop then shutting off the power (unclean shutdown) the power on check seems to correct the problem. I have tried this with both ext3 and ext4 formats and it seems to work reliably so I'm guessing that the error message is wrong. I now get a regular boot to the desktop but trying to run anything graphical locks up the desktop. The terminal seems to work for a while but after 15-20 minutes I lose the desktop, whether I am running anything or it's just sitting untouched. (memory leak/stack problem???) I installed the BOINC client and connected to the server remotely from another computer and it keeps running in the background (I can check it from the other computer) even after I lose direct access to the Karmic computer, so the problem seems to be confined to Gnome. I'm still playing with this and will let you know if I manage to isolate anything. The only thing I can think of in this case is to set a flag depending on where the install was started from, then displaying one of 2 slides with or without the "explore" line. If this proves to be too time consuming a fix my feeling is that it would be better to drop the line altogether. >From my experience, that may or may not be typical, the person most likely to use this feature is a first time user. Since the explore only works from the desktop install icon, and then only if a person's computer is fast enough, there is too much room for confusion that could poison a first impression of Ubuntu. I think most people will, as I did, try the Live CD session, then not worry about it after the install has started. My 2 cents, Roy P.S. A possibility is to change the line to something like - "If you started the install from the Desktop then you can continue exploring Ubuntu during the install." [Bug 432815] [NEW] Karmic A-6 Desktop freezes
Public bug reported: This is actually a continuation of bug #416660 filed for Alpha 5. Performing almost any action in a graphical window will cause the desktop to freeze. Occasionally the mouse will remain active as far as cursor movement is concerned, but never (after the freeze) has any button press/click effect. The main difference I have noticed from Alpha 5 to 6 is that in Alpha 5 the terminal almost always worked properly but now has the same lock up problems as other windows. The lockups also seem to happen sooner (in less time) in Alpha 6. [Bug 416660] Re: Could not install Karmic.
Installing the Karmic Beta- Tried to install 4 times on the Dell GX-270 that I have used previously and got failures (screen lock up) anywhere from reading the release notes to 82% installed. So I tried on a GX-280 and voila! success. This was on the same hard drive that was used during the failures. The only component I hadn't changed was the DVD drive so I changed that and tried again with no success on the GX-270. Just as a confirmation I installed 8.04.3 (I have previously install 8.04.1 & .2 as well as 8.04 Server on this computer) successfully, so the problem is definitely the install program not liking the GX-270. The only real difference in the 2 computers that I haven't been able to swap between them is the on- board video. They are both Intel but a slightly different model. The DX-270 has an Intel 82865G and the DX-280 has an Intel 82915G.
