Re: [Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none))

2008-10-31 Thread Ray
Hi,
the problem is not directly reproducible, just at certain times the
connection seems to break since the throughput heavily drops, pings
are not delivered and so on. When I then check the log, entries as
attached appear.

Ubuntu: 8.10
network-manager: 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1

cat /etc/network/interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Thx a lot

[Bug 233943] [NEW] Ubuntu 7.10: Synaptic package manager, and ADD/REMOVE doesn't work, because of some problem with: language-pack-gnome-en

2008-05-22 Thread Ray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

I have been having a problem in Ubuntu 7.10,
I have not had this problem any of the other 11 times I re-install Ubuntu 7.10
version 386 from the same CD before.
First I wanted to know when to update, because one package called
language-pack-gnome-en will not work right.
and tried fixing this problem by myself, but now ADD/REMOVE doesn't work, as
well as Synaptic Package Manager.

I try updating and get this message:

Software index is broken:

It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the package
manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this
issue at first.

I also tried going into synaptic package manager and going to Edit/Fix Broken

Iused to get that message when I opened Update Manager.

I already tried going into the terminal and using these commands:
sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get install build-essential

but nothing I know of has fixed these problems however I am a newbee to Linux,
and have only known Linux even existed for a little more then a year.

[Bug 36461] Re: XOrg dualhead regression

2006-07-24 Thread ray
This bug is hitting me too. I have i810 integrated and PCI ATI card.
Heard great things about Ubuntu so it's a bummer to see this bug... i
really need dual head. Once you have it, you can't go back hahaha.

Any update on a fix? Gonna have to try Suse for a while until a fix for
this hits dapper. Thanks.

2006-07-25 Thread ray
I applied the dpatch by Marcelo and rebuilt the xorg-server package, and
what do you know, i got dual-head back. Thanks Marcelo, now i can give
kubuntu a whirl. If anyone wants the debs i built, look here. Built on
kubuntu dapper.

[Bug 36461] Re: XOrg dualhead regression

2006-07-26 Thread ray
Yes i was wondering... cause i upgraded to Edgy first to see if it was
fixed there and it wasn't. So i reinstalled Dapper and built the xorg-
server package with Marcelo's dpatch. Dual head has been working great
for me ever since.

An update for xserver-xorg-core in Dapper came out yesterday, but i saw
no mention of this bug. Fabio M. Di Nitto is listed as the
maintainer... I wonder if he's following this thread haha :)

[Bug 218123] Re: International Clock Applet - Home Settings not getting Saved

2008-05-08 Thread Ray
This bug can't be reproduced in Hardy final relase version. Since I
installed 8.04 after the release now everything seems to be ok. The
problem was in the beta version.

I had/has "Asia/Kolkata" in /etc/timezone.

Thanks again for your response.

[Bug 134640] Re: [Feisty] Sound Juicer plays noise instead of music

2007-11-07 Thread Ray
I too am having the very same problem, and didn't know that trying to play a
DVD which he says doesn't work which doesn't in my exact case and then playing
an audio CD will then work.
I am going to try it right now and say if it works here:
Wow it worked!, however now I am wondering if after exact an audio CD if it
will sound alright, but even if it plays back fine right now it doesn't mean
that it will later after I shut down my computer and start my computer back up
which I will test and recomment in a while.
It plays fine even with CD-RW CDs if I have it copied on my drive, but now am
going to shut down and start up and recomment about whether then it will work.

[Bug 175484] Re: snd-hda-intel broken in generic_2.6.22-14.38_amd64

2008-02-26 Thread Ray
I can confirm the bug on 2.6.24, it causes the kernel to get confused,
apps that attempt to read the process table crash. The only workaround
at this point is to disable the intel-hda driver. My dmesg is exactly
the same as the user who posted the report. Side note: I have a Radeon
2600XT in my system, which has audio output through the HDMI port which
uses the intel-hda driver, I know support for this was recently
introduced. Perhaps that is the issue?

2008-01-13 Thread Ray
The same thing just happened to me. Gutsy has been running without a hitch
since updating in October. Running on a dual-boot machine.
Today's scenario:
   Ubuntu running without any problems
Restarted computer using icon in upper right-hand corner
   Started XP-Pro SP2 through Grub
   Logged into XP
   Updated window$ using toolbar icon
   Restarted computer
   Logged into XP
   Installed Google Sketchup
Ran & played with Sketchup (they need to port this to Linux ASAP)
   Rebooted computer
   Started Ubuntu via Grub
   Logged into Ubuntu
Error box: "There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemonlast
error message was: Did not receive a reply..."
   Restarted computer
   Same thing happened.

connected from the ubuntu machine before. I'm running eeebuntu 3.0 (9.10)

[Bug 487403] [NEW] update manager doesn't show automatically even when there are updates available

2009-11-23 Thread Ray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I'm running UNR9.10 on an Acer Aspire One A150. (update-manager
1:0.126.9)

The update-manager never shows automatically even when there are updates
available. Upon running update manager (when I realize something's up),
the window shows with the whole list of available updates already there,
which seems to imply that it has been checking for updates, only that it
has not been prompting.

My Software Sources > Updates > Automatic Updates settings are as follows:

only notify about available updates

[Bug 487403] Re: update manager doesn't show automatically even when there are updates available

2009-11-23 Thread Ray
Yes, mine is an admin user.

The circumstances for that user is a bit special though (if this helps):

installed UNR9.04 with admin user (e.g. admin1)
upgraded to UNR9.10 using update manager
created second admin user (e.g. admin2) using user accounts window
ported some of the data over to admin2's home folder, the rest were stored in
backup
removed admin1 account and home folder

So now I only have one admin user account (e.g. admin2), which I'm
using.

[Bug 441678] Re: [needs-packaging] OpenShot Video Editor

2010-01-09 Thread Ray
This is a good video editor, but doesn't it depend directly on ffmpeg?
Since ffmpeg is a cease-and-desist waiting to happen (and that's why we
love it) that would make it so it couldn't be included on the actual
install disc. Most Gnome programs deal with that by using gstreamer for
encoding/decoding so that there is a layer of seperation betweent the
two. But openshot has the complete removal of all gstreamer code as a
"High" priority on their Todo list.

... Plus, like Dorian, I don't like the image-buttons... they really
clash with the rest of Ubuntu. (Stock buttons were made for a reason.)

Those two reasons shouldn't bar it from being in the repositories, and I
totally think this program should be included for Lucid. I'm just saying
why I don't think it should be the default.

[Bug 345281] Re: package obm-storage 2.1.10-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2013-12-30 Thread Ray
I believe it revolves around the 10.4 distro personally, as I am having
a lot of trouble, and can't even upgrade. I have for over a year now
(not joking, nor exaggerating) tried to fix four computers in total with
this error. I have one left., two are in pieces and one I bashed to
death in frustration. 10.4 has been a sad letdown since problems
started, especially since I don't know how to fix them, and neither does
anyone else. "Oh, just upgrade to the new one"..."just"...right. If I
could I would...years ago.

[Bug 1581470] Re: gnome-language-selector crashes when trying to drag English to the top

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1581567 ***

I'm getting no error when changing the language order (except lack of
persistence beyond a reboot), but when I try to change the regional
settings, I get a crash due to permission denial.

Would like to know an approximate timescale for this - will try 14.04 in
the meantime.

[Bug 986453] [NEW] cryptkeeper added to panel, won't start up

2012-04-20 Thread Ray
Public bug reported:

Long story-short, I have bank statements I urgently need. I have
cryptkeeper installed and used dashboard to add to the side panel. When
I launch cryptkeeper, no symbol or anything comes up. There are no
indications of it working. I need those bank statements urgently. If
there is a patch or something I can do to fix this, I would be forever
grateful.

P.S. I am not very good with computers. I am probably average with them.
Please try to make any solution as simple as possible. And I need the
files from cryptkeeper, I don't need people telling me to use something
else unless there is no choice. Even then, I still need my files. Thanks
in advance.

[Bug 556020] Re: Cryptkeeper doesn't work

2012-04-21 Thread Ray
I don't know. I started ubuntu not too long after 10.10 came out. But,
assuming you have the drop down menus that say applications, places,
etc. you just go to applications, system tools, and click cryptkeeper.
You should notice a symbol that looks like keys. Click it and any folder
you create should be there. select the one you want to open and enter
your password. It should work in 10.10, but I don't know what 9.10 is
like and I specialize in other operating systems. Still getting used to
Linux. But I love it!

[Bug 928895] Re: filesystem deadlock sshfs precise kernel 3.2.0-12-generic

2012-03-31 Thread ray
given the situation - i am too lazy to open another bug report for this
issue - since it kind of smells like it's the same problem:

for a fat (not fat32) formated usb device i see the sync failing when i
copy a file >200M to the device. the bug is as incomplete as can be. it
also hangs and dumps some call trace to dmesg and corrupts the fs. but
who cares. only bug reports reported with apport are worthy... and btw.
this continues with other fs too. cifs mountpoint fails also.

[Bug 1449005] Re: trim does not work with Samsung 840 EVO after firmware update (EXT0DB6Q)

2015-07-20 Thread ray
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1338706 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1338706

Is this the same Problem as described there at https://blog.algolia.com
/when-solid-state-drives-are-not-that-solid/ ?

This does affect the 850 EVO also, not just PRO.

Well, the 'bugfix' for 3.16.0-43.58 is there, but somehow the Kernel does not
say 'disabling queued TRIM support'
I currently get 'failed to get NCQ Send/Recv Log Emask 0x1'.

Also I am a bit confused, while it may be another issue only i face,
since the system currently should be 14.04.2 with an lts-utopic kernel,
but the latest kernel uname -a reports, right after an upgrade:

Linux 3.16.0-43-generic #58~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jun 22 10:21:20
UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This looks somewhat old by the stated date. Why does aptitude update &&
aptitude dist-upgrade not upgrade to the Version with the 'bugfix', and
why does the Version number indicate a match to the Version with the
'bugfix'?

cat /sys/block/sda/device/queue_depth does report 31

Offtopic:

Does anyone work on detecting or scanning at a low-level (dm, logical
volume manager, file-system) for 512 sized and zeroed areas at
suspicious places, maybe even telling the maybe corrupted filename?
Actually the information I found about fstrim and the real inner
workings in combination with volume managers etc. is hard to find.

I would welcome if someone would pick up on the tests that algolia
published on github to build some stress tests for ssd in general.

Does it zero out 'random' blocks only when it's under some 'heavy load',
or just always?

Hey, I think I figured it out. In 11.10, I installed something. I forgot
what it was, but it began with gnome. What ever it was, it allows
cryptkeeper to pop up in the upper part of the desktop. Uhh, not sure
what it was but I will post it ASAP. I figured it out but the whole bank
statement thing got things so crazy I forgot to post the solution.
Sorry, I will try.

[Bug 962415] [NEW] network manager ad-hoc usability

2012-03-22 Thread ray
Public bug reported:

the wireless settings and the user interface may have room for
improvement.

first of all. i have no 'scan now for networks' button there. i can't
connect with a button in the menu because there are only 'connect to
hidden' and the 'create new wireless network' options available.

so before i read up on the ad-hoc networks i used to try to create the
'new' connection manually by creating a new one. the result is not what
i intended to. i created ad-hoc networks, wondering why my connection
wasn't working.. but now to something completely different.

i gave the ad-hoc features a try now. i have one device with external
wifi and internal wifi. so this device should connect to the
infrastructure and become a ad-hoc host at the same time. i have 2
different devices to try. internal wifi set up as ad-hoc. wpa2 personal.

now from other device - the ad-hoc network is not visible for some time
(no scan button there) - and when i try to connect. it can't connect.
but the ad-hoc network just appeared in the manager so i supposed it
should work then.

then i set up another ad-hoc network with wep 128 just to test if it's
functional that way. entered a password with no length limits (i'll
explain). then, from the other machine i tried to connect. funny. the
dialog now just allows a password with certain lengths! so i can't enter
the password i just specified. back to the ad-hoc host. now i
disconnected the ad-hoc host at the host. the network appears as a
normal network at the other device now (?) the last thing to wonder
about is the wireless new network creation (ad-hoc creation) dialog
which.. greys out all fields for an existing configuration. so I can't
just enter a new password for the stored - and not in use - 'new
network'. why do i have to create a new ad-hoc network if i want to
change the unusable password to another one?

AND why do all new networks i TRY to connect to have auto connect
enabled by default? and why does it reconnect sometimes even when i
manually disconnect from my network? auto connect is nice - but if i
tell my wifi to disconnect - it should just do that and nothing else
until i connect it again.

i consider these details to be bugs.

[Bug 962415] Re: network manager ad-hoc usability

2012-03-22 Thread ray
it seems to work only for the weakest wep configuration for me :/

nice to have:
the client does not display the usual signal strength indicator. signal
strength is useful information for the user.

the ad-hoc host does not show if a client connected or tried to or
failed or whatever goes on or fails there. some info indicator for that
kind of detail would be nice too.

nice to have would be a 'disable wireless' (all? / or per device?)
option. or a softer way: disallow this device to use any 'auto'
connection. why? because while i was testing ad-hoc networking it always
reconnected to my normal infrastructure wifi.

[Bug 151365] Re: Autosave doesn't work for Unsaved Documents

That's the problem. Here we have a huge group of users and one bug

even have a gnome, kde and other bug tracking accounts but i don't
report there since they also just say.. uh.. that's an ubuntu issue. Go
somewhere else.

Back to the issue. I'm on precise testing.. gedit crashed and the
unsaved docs are lost. This is a disappointing situation.

hand since purge did not work on a full drive either. then i installed

[Bug 946634] [NEW] upgrading to 3.2.0-17 lead to.. lots of issues (lightdm, kernel, nvidia driver, xfce, colord, xfrun4)

2012-03-04 Thread ray
Public bug reported:

given hardware: laptop with connected external screen. nvidia drivers.
lightdm and xfce.

i upgraded. turned off without disconnecting the screen. turned on
again. now without the 2nd screen connected.

lightdm failed with the session chooser button.

my usb mouse just flashes and does not work at all. dmesg shows tons of
usb reset messages.

i can't move the mouse cursor to the right side of the laptop screen. on
the right side there is only random image data visible.

dmesg shows 2 segfaults/general protection errors right after just booting up
the machine:
colord crashed
xfrun4 crashed

doesn't xubuntu xfce use launchpad? launchpad tells me it's not
configured to forward bugs to those developers.

i hope the absolutely latest version does not have that. otherwise i already
reported some issues.
so many things fail..

well, other formats fail also. not as clearly visible (= less artifacts)
but they won't play without freezing for seconds.

the message log shows:

but that's on a core i7 box. that machine is fast enough and has been

3350 and the temperature is at maximum 78 which is quite normal. (compared to
other laptops i've seen - samsung etc.) Although some higher speed on the fan
would probably utilize the turbo a bit more since the cpu clocks down if it's
getting warm.

[Bug 928895] Re: filesystem deadlock sshfs precise kernel 3.2.0-12-generic

2012-02-10 Thread ray
i don't think your 'missing logfiles' will do you any good. go and build
a testcase and test it yourself. do you really think in the user logs
will be anything regarding in kernel lock race conditions? i just read
about the gcc issue with ia64. this one is on intel arch but those
issues exist. in short: don't bother me with that apport tool. it's just
another strategy to ping pong the bug away and out of sight. usually
developers go like: 'get a fresh kernel and we'll take a look'. and now
it's a kind of fresh issue and you go like.. ohh that's incomplete.
please diagnose the problem in the code, maybe add pencil and paper to
that. not with my logs. thank you.

2012-02-15 Thread ray
what hardware configuration detail do you *really* need? it's a intel core i7.
all the info you should need is in the uname string. arch and processor type.
the bug still is there also after updates. 100% reproducible for me.
don't tell me you need to know my memory card controller info or all the
packages i have on that system or whatever to debug this.
