Re: [Bug 276531] Re: 8.10 Alpha apps lock if default printer can't be reached

2008-12-05 Thread Paul O'Keefe
Still an issue. Current configuration looks like this:

Linux pokeefe-laptop 2.6.27-10-generic #1 SMP Fri Nov 21 12:00:22 UTC
2008 i686 GNU/Linux
Ubuntu 8.10

cups-config --version
1.3.9

gedit 2.24.2

One remote printer configured as default:
lpp://10.0.0.1:631/printers/Photosmart-C4200-series

Second machine is currently powered off. Print dialog in gedit hangs
for approximately 1 minute in this configuration before giving me a
dialog that allows selecting an alternate printer. If I power on the
machine with the printer attached, dialog is instantaneous.

[Bug 288148] Re: Disabling ath5k in 2.6.27

2008-11-11 Thread Paul O'Keefe
Tim ---

Just applied the LBM update from today and retested the LBM ATH5K .vs.
the NDISWRAPPER module. There are still performance problems, however
the LBM ATH5K module seems very stable now. I cannot duplicate the
earlier lost packet behavior I was observing in October.

Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 9.04? Thanks in

Status in “ekiga” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
Binary package hint: ekiga

Ekiga comes on-line and registers with my two SIP providers, ekiga.net
and Diamondcard. Upon shutdown registration to ekiga.net is properly
shutdown, but registration to Diamondcard remains registered.

-- Note, this is hypothesis, Diamondcard does not make a troubleshooting
page available to show whether SIP client is registered like the one at
ekiga.net

Impact:

Calls to Diamondcard from a normal outside line report "All Circuits are
busy" when call delivery to client is attempted.

Work arounds:

(1) Bring up another SIP client such as the Diamondcard provided "Dreamtime
Softphone 2.1.9b" (only Windows available) and then tear it down to release the
connection
(2) Wait for the timeout to expire. Timeout is not configurable. Default
shown for Ekiga.net appears to be 1 hour, so possible Diamondcard is also using
1 hour as the timeout.

[Bug 332543] Re: echo test not working

2009-03-09 Thread Paul O'Keefe
Was looking for a similar issue to report against.

In my configuration, I had previous release of Ekiga running on
Intrepid. I use it infrequently, mainly for voicemail but have both an
Ekiga.net and Diamondcard account so I can do full in/out calling.

Received a voicemail today and went to check it just to clear it from
the outbound site. Found I could not make any outbound calls. Could make
inbound calls. I'm running the alpha (current) version of Jaunty now.

Had a second computer sitting next to this one, also running Jaunty, but
with x86_64 binaries. Configured Ekiga there with default settings and
it worked correctly for Echo Test and outbound calling.

Removed configuration on this computer using "apt-get purge ekiga" and
then "apt-get autoremove" and reinstalled. After new configuration of
all attributes functionality was restored to normal.

Possibly upgrade process from Intrepid to Jaunty is broken? Was this not
a major release change between Ekiga 2.x and now 3.x?

[Bug 288148] Re: Disabling ath5k in 2.6.27

2008-10-26 Thread Paul O'Keefe
I always read the change log for the Kernel at least before I apply an
update and thus I knew my ATH5K support would disappear. But I've long
felt that update-manager or some other tool should preserve the last few
changelogs locally so that when you applied an update and something
suddenly stopped working you had a way to go back through your locally
kept logs to try to determine the root cause.

I think the note here should have been much more explanatory. Something
to the effect of "You WILL lose wireless connectivity and must take the
following steps to restore it"

For my personal situation, merely installing the LBM package did not
instantly restore connectivity. While I'm still troubleshooting and
expect I'll eventually get either that module, MadWiFi or NdisWrapper to
work, I can see that for many people, especially who only have wireless
connectivity on their laptop/netbook that this could be terribly
frustrating.

That said, all of you should be mindful that you are currently running a
pre-release version of Intrepid, that this is not GA software and that
you have put yourself in a unique situation by electing to use this
distribution. The goal for everybody is to have stable software in six
more days. I've experienced the performance problems with the ATH5K
module that this thread are addressing and agree that stability for
release must be a paramount goal.

Following up on my earlier post, I was not able to get LBM to work on my

troubleshooting, but this did break my install. I'll investigate the

[Bug 289100] Re: Kernel update to 2.6.27-7.14 broke atheros wireless on acer aspire one

2008-10-27 Thread Paul O'Keefe
Add my report to this thread.

With Intrepid update this week that disabled ath5k driver in linux-
image-2.6.27-7-generic I followed suggested instructions to install
linux-backports-modules to restore ath5k driver.

Currently running
linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic version 2.6.27-7.14 &
linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-7-generic version 2.6.27-7.4

Upon boot up to GDM login prompt all appears ok. I moved to a text
terminal and signed in and verified that I had wireless connectivity. I
had IP address and could ping my outside gateway.

I then signed in with GDM and lost connectivity. Connectivity seems to
be sporadic and slow. It appears the interface is bouncing up and down
although /var/log/messages is not reflecting this. Pinging my router
shows

PING 10.0.0.254 (10.0.0.254) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 10.0.0.254: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=214 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.0.254: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=147 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.0.254: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=677 ms
^C
--- 10.0.0.254 ping statistics ---

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 147.884/346.778/677.596/235.516 ms

which is consistent with the erratic interface behavior described above.

This interface worked with the former linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic
package and works now with NDISWRAPPER.

Re: [Bug 288148] Re: Disabling ath5k in 2.6.27

2008-11-06 Thread Paul O'Keefe
If you can live with the performance

Go to www.2wire.com and check the speed meter (just for comparison)

Kernel ath5K from LBM: 156 KBPS
NDIS Wrapper with net511 driver: 2.37 MBPS

from same location with same interference levels.

Pings to the local router show similar performance with NDIS Wrapper
driver in under 2 msec and Kernel driver in the 200 msec range.

[Bug 287910] [NEW] Ekiga does not properly unregister

2008-10-22 Thread Paul O'Keefe
Public bug reported:

Ekiga version: 2.0.12-0ubuntu5
Ubuntu: 8.10 Release Candidate

Loaded X-Lite sip client on a windows system and verified that
Diamondcard is ignoring SIP unregister command. Appears there is not a

this issue to them.

[Bug 276531] [NEW] 8.10 Alpha apps lock if default printer can't be reached

2008-09-30 Thread Paul O'Keefe
Public bug reported:

Kernel: 2.6.27-4-generic
Gnome: 2.24.0
system-config-printer: 1.0.5
Development Branch Ubuntu 8.10, all updates applied

Scenario:

Laptop -- many printers configured from customer sites. Primary home
printer configured as internet printing protocol to another Ubuntu
system and marked as the default printer.

Problem:

When not in home office location, some applications (e.g. Text Editor)
that properly use Gnome to find the printer will hang during invocation
of the print dialog.

Work around:

Assign a different default printer

Reproducible with any default printer as long as the printer is not
reachable when the print dialog invoked.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue
for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Status in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
since recent updates to intrepid my monitors will not go to sleep any more.
this has started occurring in the last week. not sure which package update has
caused it though.

I am using nvidia drivers with twinview setup, I have tried both the
current versions of the 173 and 177 branches of the nvidia drivers and
still get this problem. unfortunately I cannot try the 'nv' driver as I
can get this to work with DVI connections to my monitors for some
reason.

I have also noticed that gnome-screensaver does not appear to be
working, it fades to a blank screen and then after about 0.5 secs
returns to the desktop. not sure if this related to the power management
issues though.

[Bug 329540] Re: Blackberry Utils Timing out on Jaunty

2009-02-17 Thread Paul O'Keefe
probe.cc already included commented out area that had a device reset
followed by a sleep. Uncommenting those two lines made the device
function under Jaunty.

---
Investigation:
--> Program functioned properly under gdb in single step mode
--> Suspect a timeout problem on the USB bus
--> Mailing list had indicated a reset function added last summer for one
instance

--> Found reset already in the code but commented out. Waiting on
answer on mailing list for how upstream wants to handle.

[Bug 329540] Re: Blackberry Utils Timing out on Jaunty

2009-02-19 Thread Paul O'Keefe
Have been working with upstream. Testing reveals that this bug only
occurs with the current Kernel version and did not occur with the
2.6.27. See email below. I believe this should move to the Kernel. How
do I get it reassigned there since the testing below showed this was not
a barry-utils bug.

Thanks for the report! Please keep us posted. Can you submit kernel bugs
to the Ubuntu folks if 2.6.29 doesn't fix it? I'd hate to have kernel
issues hampering Barry on the latest Ubuntu release.

[Bug 316007] Re: Rhythmbox doesn't put music files in the Music directory on mtp devices

2009-02-13 Thread Paul O'Keefe
Create the following file:

.is_audio_player
--
audio_folders=MUSIC
folder_depth=2
output_formats=application/ogg,audio/mpeg

use "mtp-sendfile .is_audio_player .is_audio_player" to transfer file to
root of Mp3 player

Jaunty version of Rhythmbox now stores files in the MUSIC folder. Mine
is still not storing in folder structure. Working through that right now
to determine if there is additional configuration to be done. I had not
used MTP protocol under Ubuntu prior to this week, but I still have a
clean Intrepid install and will test same there.

While we are here, and completely off-topic, the list of MP3 players
supported by libmtp ought to be in a configurable file and not in music-
players.h, but a topic for another day

mainline 2.6.28.6 and 2.6.29-rc5 on both x86 and x86_64.

Back trace shows waiting on a bulk usb read, last userland in libusb,
and hung in kernel space.

Works correctly if run under gdb. Thinking a timing issue.

Current thought is that write may not complete to device. Examined code and
there is an unlimited wait time on the read.

Daniel: Reduced crackle with your updated kernel, but still there.

Clear when playing any media through:

Preferences --> Sound
Rhythmbox
Firefox --> MP3
Firefox --> WAV
Firefox --> RealPlayer File
Firefox --> Quicktime
Firefox --> Flash

However, it appears that after I load any Flash media that I then get
static on just idle mouse movements. Not able to consistently reproduce
and the kernel change has reduced the crackle a lot.

But not clear when playing

My symptoms:could receive inbound calls but not place outbound

My observation: Possible problem in the upgrade between Intrepid to

I am using a USB attached headset and find it works much better in
Januty than it did in Intrepid.

[Bug 524219] [NEW] Clock, Temperature, location Change missing since Lucid Alpha Netbook Remix

2010-02-18 Thread Paul O'Keefe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Since update to Lucid Alpha, Clock, Weather, and Location controls have
disappeared from status area with no discernible way to return them
there. I have purged .gnome, .gnome2, .gconf, etc settings to restore
gnome to default state. Note also in attached picture a second indicator
for empathy that I cannot delete. I will file a separate bug for empathy
since I don't feel this is related.

[Bug 524221] Re: empathy does not connect to AIM

2010-02-22 Thread Paul O'Keefe
I did not mean to imply that it was not working in Pidgin, only that I
saw an error in Pidgin about too many connect attempts when I switched
to that after failing to connect with Empathy. Pidgin is working
properly.

empathy:
  Installed: 2.28.1.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.29.90-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 2.29.90-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com lucid/main Packages
 *** 2.28.1.1-0ubuntu1 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Maybe there is a problem with the upgrade process? I show 2.28.1.1 on my
Ubuntu 9.10 system and it is working properly, while on my Alpha 10.4
upgrade it is not.

[Bug 524221] Re: empathy does not connect to AIM

2010-02-22 Thread Paul O'Keefe
Need to resolve the hold on empathy

The following packages have been kept back:
  empathy libavcodec-extra-52 libavcodec-unstripped-52

This was a straight upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4. the 9.10 was an upgrade
from 9.4 which had been a clean install. I'll continue to investigate
why there is a hold here, or force the update otherwise.

Re: [Bug 287910] Re: Ekiga does not properly unregister

2009-08-25 Thread Paul O'Keefe
I had updated the report a long time ago. Diamondcard had to modify a
configuration setting on their end, the problem was the service provider and
not Ekiga. Please close this report.

Status in “ekiga” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Default
shown for Ekiga.net appears to be 1 hour, so possible Diamondcard is also using
1 hour as the timeout.

then calc will start correctly.

Resolution was found on

Please reduce severity and mark as only affecting the upgrade script.

The right people already adjusted the bug and linked it to the
corresponding Debian Bug. Following the very long thread from Debian
this seems to be a non-issue because they have already revised the next
version of the libreoffice package. This one time problem occurred
during the upgrade from the prior version. The quick way to determine if
it was upgrade related or not was to define a new user and try calc from
there. Since it worked there, I went to investigate and found the Debian
bug report.

[Bug 857035] [NEW] Unity/Compiz Hotkeys extremely slow

2011-09-22 Thread Paul O'Keefe
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)
Release:11.10

unity:
  Installed: 4.16.0-0ubuntu2
compiz:
  Installed: 1:0.9.5.94+bzr20110919-0ubuntu1

Alt-tab and Meta (Windows key) keys extremely slow to respond, near 10
seconds. Normally would expect Alt-tab to switch to next application in
buffer which it eventually does, but after a significant delay. Would
expect Meta key to bring up search screen immediately to type in or find
the name of the app.

Instead of immediate responses, lag is between 5 to 10 seconds on each
of these actions. These actions worked fine on 11.04 and prior releases
on the same equipment.

Thank you for your response. I have completed the steps in your message
and have details and additional notes.

Additional Notes:
* Performance is better if windows are not maximized when trying alt+tab
to switch
* compared Xorg.0.log output between USB Stick session and normal
session and it is identical for the section shown below
* Guest Login produces the same performance as regular session
* There is no Xorg.conf file on this system, so all values are probed or
defaults

Matteo:

(1) What graphics card do you have
(2) Can you repeat the process by booting a USB flash drive with the current
version of Ubuntu 11.10 to see if you are still seeing it? 10.04 is more than
18 months old and I never had any problems with performance until this last
version, and only on that one specific system with the Intel graphics card.
