Matteo: (1) What graphics card do you have (2) Can you repeat the process by booting a USB flash drive with the current version of Ubuntu 11.10 to see if you are still seeing it? 10.04 is more than 18 months old and I never had any problems with performance until this last version, and only on that one specific system with the Intel graphics card.
