[Bug 556856] Re: [lucid] [nouveau] blank screen on Dell Precision M4500 [10de:0cbc]

2010-04-19 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Chris, no good results to report with the drm-next kernel (and I can't
say for the backports in ~xorg-edgers, I haven't tried them yet, and
understood it would be much the same as the drm-next kernel).

The screen remains blank in X, plymouth seems to start properly and I
can see messages about ureadahead and plymouth-* being killed or
started, but nothing else shows up on the screen (no splash). Attached
is the dmesg log as the system boots with the drm-next kernel.

[Bug 554393] Re: nm-applet will not connect using vpnc plugin

2010-04-19 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Tpugliese,

Just to make sure, have you rebooted your system since installing
network-manager-vpnc/network-manager-vpnc-gnome, and then tested the
connect?

Also, are there any errors in ~/.xsession-errors?

Finally, do you indeed have nm-vpnc-auth-dialog and two other helper
programs in /usr/lib/network-manager-vpnc, as configured in
/etc/NetworkManager/VPN/nm-vpnc-service.name?

Thanks, and sorry for delays...

reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the
development release - Lucid Lynx. It would help us greatly if you could
test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of
Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at

[Bug 447067] Re: Network Connections window says I've "Never" used the wired connection I'm using right now

2010-04-21 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Confirming, setting priority to Low.

I see it happening on my system as well, and it seems (from last time I
looked at it briefly) like it was the timestamp for last use being in
the past or something, causing the label do display "Never", for a wired
connection currently in use.

Same applies to a currently-used wifi connection: mine currently
displays "4 minutes ago", even though it is currently connected.

[Bug 550264] [NEW] the horizon texture is missing

2010-03-28 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: stellarium

When starting stellarium 0.10.3-0ubuntu1 on Lucid, the texture for the
horizon (which should be a background of trees or something similar)
doesn't load, it is instead shown as squares of different shades of

[Bug 503545] Re: network manager slowing down internet connection (lucid)

2010-02-09 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Hi!

Thanks for filing a bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Unfortunately, there seems to be some information missing that could
greatly help us in identifying the problem you are facing.

Please respond to this bug by adding an excerpt of /var/log/syslog, as
well as, if possible, the contents of /etc/resolv.conf and the output of
the '/sbin/ifconfig -a' command, as they are set when network-manager is
running and when you see

If you want to do this quickly and simply, you can run the 'apport-
collect 503545' command (again, network-manager should be installed and
running (as you experience slowdowns) when you do this). In this case
you will still need to include the contents of /etc/resolv.conf. Note
that some of the information included could be sensitive.

[Bug 493333] Re: impossible to fix systems with broken X

2010-02-09 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Hi,

Which xorg driver do you use? I think this bug should be instead
assigned to that specific driver which no longer works for your hardware
or crashes.

As for connecting to a wireless network with no X, it is still possible.
If you already configure everything manually using iwconfig and ifconfig
or dhcp, you can stop network-manager, which should allow you to setup
your network without issues.

[Bug 480719] Re: OpenVPN connects but no access to remote network and then connection fails

2010-02-10 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Hi,

I see a number of issues with the APIC on CPU0. This is likely not
related, but you may want to open a new bug about it (and try to see if
your system boots with the noapic kernel option).

Also, please make sure that the openvpn configuration you are using is correct:
Nov 11 10:20:17 tatooine nm-openvpn[20271]: Bad LZO decompression header byte: 0
Nov 11 10:20:58 tatooine nm-openvpn[20271]: LZO compression initialized
These messages indicate that you have probably enabled LZO compression in the
config, but that it is not enabled on the server. You should see if the
connection stays established with compression disabled.

Additionally, these errors indicate similar issues:
Nov 11 10:21:14 tatooine nm-openvpn[20271]: WARNING: 'link-mtu' is used
inconsistently, local='link-mtu 1542', remote='link-mtu 1546'
Nov 11 10:21:14 tatooine nm-openvpn[20271]: WARNING: 'mtu-dynamic' is present
in remote config but missing in local config, remote='mtu-dynamic'
In both of these cases, you should try to set the mtu options to match the
server's, as they should help with connection performance.

Please let us know whether these changes improve your connection
stability.

2010-04-28 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Brian,

I understand your frustration, but we do need your help in identifying
such issues, which often vary greatly between users and expectations :)

Have you filed a bug regarding this specific issue you're describing, or
did you look for one that was already filed? It would be very helpful if
you could either search quickly and add information to a bug that
describes *exactly* the issue you're experiencing, or file a new bug so
that we can focus on just that issue and/or mark it as duplicate if we
later find a master bug. If you have a bug number, please post it here
or email me directly with it so we can follow up.

Thanks!

Re: [Bug 215497] Re: IPv6 configuration is not flushed when interface goes down

2010-05-08 Thread Mathieu Trudel
We do hope to pick up with the state of NM upstream at this point, it just
required major updates that couldn't really make it in Lucid. FWIW, you
should be able to try the NM trunk PPA, which may include the necessary ipv6
fixes already, or will shortly. Since it is a PPA for daily builds however,
it may be unstable and not fully tested / buggy.

On May 8, 2010 9:26 AM, "Tore Anderson" wrote:

I think this problem is fixed in upstream NM now; from what I've seen
it'll always flush all the IPv6 addresses when it's shutting down an
interface.

There's been lots of work on the IPv6 parts of NM lately, by the way,
see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=538499 for the
"umbrella" bug. I think you're more likely to get IPv6 issues in NM
fixed by joining the discussion there (submit new bugs for new issues
and say so in #538499). When you're happy with how the upstream code
work, you can ask the Ubuntu maintainers to do an upstream re-sync.

[Bug 346768] Re: network-manager-pptp loses MPPE settings

2010-02-18 Thread Mathieu Trudel
@SmartKenny,

Truly sorry about that issue -- you'll want to install network-manager-
pptp-gnome in addition to network-manager-pptp if you're using the PPA
now, it has been split so that people using KDE don't have to pull in
tons of GNOME dependencies they don't need.

Once installed, it should work fine, please post here if it doesn't.
Also, once it works, you should disable the NetworkManager trunk PPA,
since there may always be new updates that break things -- it's a daily
build, so there is always some risk. I really should have mentioned this
from the start.

@sayantandas, please open a separate bug for this, and describe the
settings you use for your VPN in details, I'm not sure if it's the same
thing yet, but if it is we can mark it as a duplicate of this bug later.

@idlehands, are you on Lucid or do you use Karmic with the trunk PPA?

[Bug 524573] [NEW] [MIR] network-manager-pptp

2010-02-19 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-pptp

Availability:

The network-manager-pptp package is in universe.
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/n/network-manager-pptp/

Rationale:

The package is useful for a large part of our user base. It is essential
for the majority of Russian DSL users - they can't get online without
it.

Security:

It is my understanding that security vulnerabilities for the PPTP plugin
of NetworkManager would get filed under the NetworkManager product,
which has been affected by 3 Secunia advisories, and 4 Vulnerabilities
in the past 7 years. 6 CVE entries are listed against NetworkManager
over the past four years on the cve.mitre.org master copy CVE list.

Quality assurance:

Package is currently installable and builds cleanly. It does not ask
debconf questions. The plugin can be installed and configured in a
matter of installing the package and entering values for two fields
through the NetworkManager connection editor for basic, standard
functionality.

network-manager-pptp currently lists 54 open bugs in Launchpad, 2 in
Debian and 7 upstream (GNOME). Many are likely to relate to usual
configurations or requirements. Upstream is quite responsive (often in a
matter of hours) and the upstream code is kept on the Gnome Git
repository.

https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-pptp
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?package=network-manager-pptp
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced;order=Importance;bug_status=UNCONFIRMED;bug_status=NEW;bug_status=ASSIGNED;bug_status=REOPENED;bug_status=NEEDINFO;component=VPN:%20pptp;product=NetworkManager

New versions of the package are often uploaded to Ubuntu prior to
reaching Debian, the core maintaining team consists of the ~network-
manager LP team.

UI standards:

network-manager-pptp is a plugin for NetworkManager. It does not ship a
.desktop file, but the configuration dialog is ships separately from the
core NetworkManager application are fully translated.

Dependencies:

All build and binary dependencies are already in main.

Standards compliance:

The package is FHS and Debian Policy compliant.
The source package is simple, and contains only the code required to support
daily builds from the git tree.

Maintenance:

network-manager-pptp may need to be updated to use the latest code from
upstream to include recent bug fixes. This process is currently
automated in daily builds. Patches can be added when required; cdbs is
used to handle patches.

Background information:

network-manager-pptp is used as a plugin for NetworkManager to establish
PPTP based VPN connections. PPTP VPN solutions include the default VPN
infrastructure for Windows systems. Some ISPs additionally use PPTP to
secure and authenticate DSL lines, some companies and universities also
use PPTP as a method to allow remote access to teleworkers.

[Bug 289443] Re: VPNC Disconnect should invoke a dBus notify

2010-01-20 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Hi,

I'm not really sure how this could be implemented in a way that would be
acceptable for everyone. Furthermore, I would suggest instead making
sure that each of the applications that show incorrect behavior have a
bug reported against them, since this will usually relates to a change
in the default gateway (through the VPN or without VPN), which would be
the same as just an Internet connection failing.

Before opening bug tasks against applications that exhibit incorrect
behavior, please retest with the current release of Ubuntu (9.10) and
confirm that your default gateway goes through the VPN.

Thanks for filing in a bug and helping make Ubuntu better!

Michael, David,

Just to be sure, is this with network-manager 0.8-0ubuntu1?

[Bug 561802] [NEW] [lucid] [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410

2010-04-12 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

During installation, bootup (plymouth) and while inside X, screen
remains blank. Switching VTs yields no results (screen remains blank).

This was done with today's daily desktop image, amd64: 10.04 (20100412).

I've been able to isolate the issue to possibly somewhere in modesetting
with the i915 driver, here are the tested cases:

 - Disabling modesetting with 'nomodeset' as a kernel parameter: boot messages
visible in 'verbose', otherwise nothing on screen, X remains blank.
 - Disabling modesetting with 'i915.modeset=0' as a kernel parameter: results
in a kernel oops, after briefly showing a simple "text" splash and showing
corruption of that splash screen. X clearly never comes up, caps/scroll/num
blink.
 - Disabling modesetting with 'nomodeset' and switching X drivers to 'vesa':
nothing on screen during boot, up to a working, visible desktop.

[Bug 563838] [NEW] file searching should understand filename globs

2010-04-15 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

File searching function does not understand filename globs "à la
Windows".

E.g. Set the search target folder to "/boot", then type in "*.cfg". No
results. If searching for "cfg" instead, grub.cfg is returned, as it
should.

[Bug 558684] [NEW] plymouth fails to start on HP Mini 500 (blank screen)

2010-04-08 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plymouth

After install, with the 20100406 ubuntu alternate image, the mini fails
to complete boot with a blank screen and just a blinking cursor visible.
If the system is booted with "verbose" or "nomodeset" as kernel
parameters instead of the default "quiet splash", it completes boot to a
graphical interface.

In the case of using "nomodeset", until gdm appears all that is visible
on screen is still a blinking cursor.

"plymouth:debug=file:/var/log/plymouth-debug.log" does not cause a log
to be written to disk.

Disk activity usually stops within 1-2 seconds at most when booting with
the default settings (quiet splash).

[Bug 558684] Re: plymouth fails to start on HP Mini 500 (blank screen)

2010-04-08 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Additional notes: running 'stop gdm; plymouthd; plymouth show-splash'
works fine.

Also, all I need to do for the system to boot properly is to get in the
grub menu, modify anything on the kernel line (e.g. just added only one
space at the end) and it worked fine. If I boot straight using the menu
item, it just hangs.

[Bug 553609] [NEW] [lucid] [atl2] ethernet adaptor fails to be detected in live installer (for PXE boot)

2010-04-01 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to netboot a system (Eee PC 900) which uses the atl2 driver
to handle its network card.

The system boots from the network successfully and properly loads the
kernel, but fails to detect the NIC from inside the initrd image if
booted from the daily lucid desktop image (20100401).

The system boots completely and completes the installer when started
using the daily server image.

Attached is the output of 'lspci -vnvn'.

[Bug 553623] [NEW] [lucid] [r8169] ethernet adaptor fails to be detected in live installer (for PXE boot)

2010-04-01 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Public bug reported:

Similar issue as in bug 553609:

I'm trying to netboot a system (in this case, a Toshiba NB200) which
uses the r8169 driver to handle its network card.

The system boots from the network successfully and properly loads the
kernel, but fails to detect the NIC from inside the initrd image if
booted from the daily lucid desktop image (20100401).

The system boots completely and completes the installer when started
using the daily server image.

I will be adding the output of 'uname -a', /proc/version_signature,
'dmesg' and 'sudo lspci -vnvn' as soon as I can get them.

[Bug 564984] [NEW] r8169 fails to autonegotiate speed/duplex

2010-04-16 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Public bug reported:

The eth0 interface on a Dell Vostro 3400, as provided by the r8169
driver, fails to detect the presence of signal or cable connection.
'ethtool' doesn't report the presence of signal either. I've installed
this system from USB, using the desktop daily image for 20100415.

This happens on every boot; system currently cannot be booted from PXE
for installation because of this bug.

A workaround is currently to issue the 'ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off'
command, after installing ethtool downloaded from another system. Once
autonegotiation is turned off, signal is properly detected and as such,
network-manager for example will see a connection and attempt to get an
address from DHCP.

Using ethtool to change the interface's mode is obviously not a viable
workaround for network-based installs.
