[Bug 387622] [NEW] file chooser extends its width wider that the screen

2009-06-15 Thread Mac
Public bug reported:

When uploading files into the Internet like uploading photos in Flickr
using Firefox, the file chooser extends its width beyond the width of
the screen making it unfriendly.

What I think is that the file chooser should at least limit its frame
width to the size of the screen.

What I know is that the file chooser is part of Ubuntu and not Firefox.

Appeared in Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope April 2009 Release

[Bug 242400] Re: laptop powers off immediately after login

2009-04-24 Thread Mac
Got it working.

Fix : Upgrade Laptop Bios

How: go to toshiba.com and download the latest version bios for your
model.

My bios was at v1.20 >> now at v2.00 (hit F2 on boot to see version)

Download the exe file from toshiba - you do not need to be in MS Windows
- safer that way too :-)

Open the exe in ubuntu and extract the ISO image. (1.8mb)

Right click on the iso and burn it to CD.

Boot the laptop off that CD and it will upgrade your bios.

My M35X Toshiba Satellite system is now 100% working.

Mac

To determine VGA type (ati or intel) boot into recovery mode and do:

lspci | grep VGA

The bios update is graphics board specific.

My MX35 dows the same thing, trying to upgrade from a solid 7.04 to the
new 9.04, turns off within 5 seconds of displaying the desktop.

1 boot in 10 I can use the laptop properly, no issues at all.

[Bug 293144] Re: wireless U/S - nx7400 upgrading from 8.04 -> 8.10

2008-11-04 Thread Mac
Dimitrios, for me it only works if I boot from the Live x64 CD. My
install is the x86 upgraded to 8.10. It would seem that the issues are
known about from the article you've provided the link to - thank you for
that.

Unless it's a physical thing, i.e. pressing the button. I can't see a
way to start the machine with wireless on. It only comes on after
Unbuntu tells it to and there's no option in the BIOS to start it
automatically - is there another way?

However, I do seem to be having the same issues as some of the people in the
reference you've given me:
- no wireless connections listed after you click on the network icon
- manually hitting the wireless switch turns it off, but it doesn't turn on
again.
- gnome-netstatus-applet 2.12.2 differs from the x64 Live CD nm-applet which is
version 0.7
- wireless doesn't connect - but it is on...

[Bug 293144] Re: wireless U/S - nx7400 upgrading from 8.04 -> 8.10

2008-11-04 Thread Mac
Dimitrios, all of those commands worked... :-)

I'm guessing there may be a problem with the nm-applet, because it
doesn't show the drop down list of networks - something I've seen in the
x64 bit version of Ubuntu 8.10.

Another feature of the 64bit version was the ability to connect to a
wireless network which isn't broadcasting its SSID, for a known address.

At System > Preferences > Network Configuration - I've entered the
details of the wireless router and security information; alas no
connection to the network...

Attached is a screen-shot - thank you...

[Bug 293144] [NEW] wireless U/S - nx7400 upgrading from 8.04 -> 8.10

2008-11-03 Thread Mac
Public bug reported:

On upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10 on my HP NX7400 Laptop, wireless
networking doesn't work - right clicking the network manager applet
doesn't give a wireless option.

I should add I'm typing this message as a Ubuntu 8.10 "Live session
user" and wireless works.

Just thought you might find this useful...

Hopefully to qualify, I'm using my laptop's built-in mouse pad and
buttons; left clicking does open the Connection Properties window.
Screenshot attached.

Using the right hand button opens a menu; Properties, Help, About;
Remove from panel, Move, Lock to panel.

If there are no further questions i'll rebuild my laptop on saturday -
to fix the issue.

Hope this has given you guys enough information.

Thanks for your support and for helping to make Ubuntu a good system.

And from the kern.log it talks about the kill switch being on and it
should be turned off?

However, on upgrading to 8.10 at no time has wireless networking been
available on the network connection icon - connection properties doesn't
show a wireless option.

It is in network configuration, but changing those settings doesn't
enable wireless networking.

[Bug 318219] [NEW] Dell n-series won't wifi after reload of Ubuntu

2009-01-17 Thread Mac
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.0.4
Kernel: 2.6.24-23-rt

 Laptop came with hardy (installed by Dell) wifi worked with wep key. It was
then wiped and vanilla hardy Ubuntu Studio 8.04 was installed.
Since then wifi doesn't work, I've tried a variety of stuff from a variety of
forums and such to no avail.

The PC shows the wap and the wap log says the pc connected. But the pc
can't access the wap (ping) or the network beyond the wap,
intranet/internet.

Other pc (windowsxp) accesses wap/internet fine.

No dhcp involved, fixed ip inuse.

RE: [Bug 318219] Re: Dell n-series won't wifi after reload of Ubuntu

2009-01-22 Thread Mac
The dmesg is from an install of Ubuntu Studio 8.0.4 amd64, on which I have
not made a major attempt to wifi.

I got similar wifi results with Hardy from canonical. In fact, the same
results from all I've installed (UBStudio 8.0.4/8.10 i386 & amd64, Hardy
i386).

The only period wifi worked was when I first took the laptop out of the box
from Dell with whatever they had loaded for Hardy.

Unfortunately, I did not look at anything about the out-of-box install
because it worked and I was unaware that Dell did anything special.

I have not attempted to install the Ubuntu CD that came from Dell...it
looks just like what canonical sends.

I also don't know about "oops" could you educate me please? I'm off to
google it now.

Thanks,
Mac

@Mac - does standard Hardy work? I noticed in your dmesg listing that
you have a kernel oops that may be related to the -rt flavour. It is
likely the reason that wireless isn't working. You cannot depend on
anything working correctly after an oops.

[Bug 53322] Evolution - Tasks don't stay complete

2006-07-17 Thread Mac
Public bug reported:

When I right click task and "mark as comlplete", a line gets drawn
through it.

When I close and re-open evolution, that line is gone.

The only way that a task will stay complete is for me to open and clost
the "status details" for a completed task, this seems to put a date in
the completed feild.

Happens every time, I an in the New Zealand time zone, it looks to me
like the date completed may be getting an old date on the right click,
and that date is not valid, so the "completed" date is not saved.

[Bug 81057] Re: DNS Resolves everything to 1.0.0.0 intermittently on some ADSL Routers

2007-10-12 Thread Mac
OK so here's my theory and how i fixed it (on 100+ Ubintu machines).

There is some low level incompatibility between the Ubuntu dns requests
and specific models of router. (I've heard this happens on a few other
distros as well, so it's not Ubuntu specific)

Some models of router are absolutely fine, and some models resolve to
1.0.0.0 just about all the time.

Some success can be had by disabling ipv6 on some routers, but on most
of my DSL connections with these faulty DSL routers, this had no effect.

The only fix guaranteed fix I have found is to avoid asking these
routers for DNS information, because they LIE!

To do this I install a small package called "dnsmasq", this is a caching
DNS proxy service that sits on your local machine and passes requests
upstream to real DNS servers, and also caches the results.

(apt-get install dnsmasq)
(man dnsmasq)

I then set the .conf file of dnsmasq to pass DNS requests directly to
opendns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS). You could also use the
DNS IP of your ISP's dns servers.

Your local machine is then set to use 127.0.0.1 (localhost) for DNS
queries where dnsmasq will answer them from cache if it can (very fast)
or go out to the DNS server you set in the .conf file.

This approach totally avoids the need to ask these buggy DSL routers DNS
queries.

As I mentioned earlier I've got this running on 100+ ubuntu machines,
and 60+ DSL routers, and it has not missed a beat.

Mac

[Bug 81057] Re: DNS Resolves everything to 1.0.0.0 intermittently on some ADSL Routers

2007-10-12 Thread Mac
The other option I should have mentioned is that manually putting the IP
addresses of good DNS servers directly into your router often fixes the
problem (usually by unticking / unticking a box like "use ISP's DNS
Servers / use Manual DNS servers".

The reason I did not use this approach for my machines is that I usually
have no access to log into my clients DSL router, so I needed a solution
that would work on the client PC.

[Bug 81057] Re: DNS Resolves everything to 1.0.0.0 intermittently on some ADSL Routers

2007-10-14 Thread Mac
Alvin,

A couple more bits...

cat /etc/resolv.conf

my says 127.0.0.1

if yours does not then edit /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf

and uncomment the line
#prepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1;

when you reboot or restart your networking do

cat /etc/resolv.conf again you should now have 127.0.0.1

Did you put your DNS servers in dnsmasq.conf, I keep mine in a seperate
text file, if yours are in the conf file, did you uncomment the line
"#no-resolv"

I also edit /etc/dnsmasq.conf and uncomment the line
#resolv-file=
changing it to
resolv-file=/home/mac/dns_servers.txt

my /home/mac/dns_servers.conf looks like

--
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220
--

Also try removing the package resolvconf if you have it and the above
does not work...

Pretty sure this is a bug in the way xorg handles some PCI bus memory

Good chance this fixed it in xorg 7.1 (feisty onwards)

[Bug 81057] DNS Resolves everything to 1.0.0.0 intermittently on some ADSL Routers

2007-01-22 Thread Mac
Public bug reported:

Heaps of people all over the net are having issues with certain models
of router sending back 1.0.0.0 for any DNS request. (Not only on Ubuntu)

Usual answers include (that actually work)
- Set DNS in the router manually
- Set DNS in the computer manually (and lock/stop changing of resolv.conf)

also

- Disabling ipv6. (not proven to work)

These solutions are not actually solutions at all, they are workarounds,
I'm unable to find a fix for it that does not involve setting manual DNS
in the PC or router, but without this I can't use Ubuntu for my clients
!!!

In my situation I have a standard build that needs to go worldwide with
no editing or setting of manual DNS in the PC. (This also means that I
can't access a clients ADSL modem to put the DNS settings in there).

Windows machines work fine.

It may be something about the router purporting to be a DNS Server when
actually it's a DNS Forwarder?

On some of the routers, installing later firmware fixes it. (But not
always). Using Windows always fixes it!

Why can't we do whatever windows does and have it "just work".

Do a google search for Ubuntu 1.0.0.0 and you'll see how many times this
issue is happening !

(One forum suggested it could it be an MTU too high / iptables issue?)

This bug may be what people are meaning in Launchpad Bug #'s 24818 and
23183

2007-01-22 Thread Mac
http://hellewell.homeip.net/phillip/blogs/comments.php?y=06&m=03&entry=entry060319-00&PHPSESSID=623cb6b4900902dd95f2a7484f0662a5

says...
Problem:
Actiontec GT701-WG DSL Modem has a dumb DNS issue. When you try to connect to a
website from a computer running Linux, you may see "Trying 1.0.0.0" in the
status bar and a failure to resolve the hostname.

Cause:
The router, which runs busybox Linux, has a DNS server program called dproxy
that has a bug that exhibits itself when you try to resolve hosts from a Linux
machine with IPv6 turned on. Unfortunately, you cannot disable the dproxy
program and the router always sends its own IP address as the nameserver to a
client that obtains an IP address via DHCP.

Fix:
Well, you could hard-code the nameservers on your computer or router that
connects to the DSL modem. But here is a solution that I came up with two years
ago for hard-coding the nameservers into the DSL modem itself.

I have also been having trouble with my DSL-604T router. I disabled ipv6
in the aliases file (changed alias net-pf-10 to alias-net-pf-10 off),
which has fixed web browsing.

With apt-get, I get a failure to connect, as it seems to resolve
gb.archive.ubuntu.com to 1.0.0.0. However, if I ping
gb.archive.ubuntu.com and then immediately run apt-get, it works:

This works for a short time, then apt-get seems to "forget" the address, and
I'm back to square one; another ping and it starts working again (by short
time, I mean no longer than the time it has taken to compose this post; maybe
five minutes or so?)

My router software version is 1.00B02T02.UK.20040618. I'm reluctant to
upgrade it on the grounds that it is working perfectly with my PC when
booted into Windows XP and Mandrake 10.1 (using ftp, pop and smtp); so
far it is only Ubuntu that has a problem (of course, the same issue
might occur with other bang up to date distros).

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2010-04-20 Thread mac
The reason why they didn't make this for so long time is either they
don't want us to use Ubuntu (shame) or they don't know how to do this
(which seems to be simple), or they have no time (5 years [first post

[Bug 429370] Re: Eduroam randomly disconnects

2010-05-08 Thread mac
I found same problem with unexpected disconnect with EduRoam Univeristy
of Opole in Poland. After several fails to get stable connection found
solution that set fast_reauth=0 can solve problem.

I`m work on Slackware 2.6.28 with:
wpa_supplicant-0.6.10-i486-1
openssl-0.9.8n-i486-1
gnutls-2.8.6-i486-1

my wpa_supplicant.conf:

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
eapol_version=1
ap_scan=1
fast_reauth=0

network={
ssid="eduroam"
bssid=[their currently working AccessPoint MAC address]
proto=WPA
key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
eap=PEAP
identity=[assigned login]
password=[assigned pass]
phase2="auth=MSCHAPV2"
}

When I`ve compiled wpa_supplicant 0.6.10 with TLS support like KILinux
wrote in #19 and #21 reply during authentication process got error that:

tls_connection_handshake - gnutls_handshake failed -> The Diffie-Hellman prime
sent by the server is not acceptable (not long enough).
EAP: method process -> ignore=FALSE methodState=MAY_CONT decision=FAIL

greetings for all Ubuntu users from Slackware user :)

Yes, it seems to be the same. I didn't see it while searching similar
problem.
The error in .xsession-errors seems to be the same.
In addition I can say, that after clicking couple of times on things in
the hidden panel like "processor monitor" and "shelf" (don't know the
real name in english), the panel start to be visible.

Best Regarts

oh yeah, it's not the "shelf" but it's "drawer"
You can find it in the hidden panel by looking for the clouds describing
the program You are searching.
Tried this method couple of times and it's working, but miss the panel
working out of the box.

David,

I did that some time ago, but someone by I guess mistake put it to
problem section. So I asked if I am alone. If Yes new install probably
will solve this problem. I tried to install drivers, but couldn't be
installed. But it is another problem.

To the oryginal one, It's strange that this problem is for so long and
nothing helps ... 2 days to new release!!

[Bug 1803863] Re: hid-multitouch

2018-11-19 Thread Mac
Yes, jsalisbury. I've noticed that kernel versions 4.15.0-20, 4.15.0-22
and 4.15.0-23 don't have this problem, but every other one in the 4.15
kernel series does.
