Dimitrios, all of those commands worked... :-)

I'm guessing there may be a problem with the nm-applet, because it
doesn't show the drop down list of networks - something I've seen in the
x64 bit version of Ubuntu 8.10.

Another feature of the 64bit version was the ability to connect to a
wireless network which isn't broadcasting its SSID, for a known address.

At System > Preferences > Network Configuration - I've entered the
details of the wireless router and security information; alas no
connection to the network...
