[Bug 301338] Re: klipper causes 1 wakeup per second when idle

2008-12-02 Thread Luis Silva
Ok. I should have checked that better. Also, doing

#ldd /usr/bin/klipper

shows that it is linked to libXFixes.
But this library is exactly supposed to prevent the need for polling.

[Bug 301338] [NEW] klipper causes 1 wakeup per second when idle

2008-11-23 Thread Luis Silva
Public bug reported:

Klipper polls once second even when nothing is going on. Checked with
powertop. There should be a way to notify klipper that something was
copied instead of polling.

[Bug 301338] Re: klipper causes 1 wakeup per second when idle

2008-11-23 Thread Luis Silva
Just checked the code for the poller and found this comment
"Update: Now there's also support for XFixes, so in case XFixes support is
detected, only XFixes is used for detecting changes, everything else is
ignored, even Qt's clipboard signals."

So compiling klipper with XFixes should actually solve the problem. Is
there any reason not to do it?

[Bug 388016] [NEW] please package kpeopletag

2009-06-16 Thread Luis Silva
Public bug reported:

kpeopletag is a small program to tag pictures and documents with contacts
stored in akonadi and recognized through nepomuk. This is still in playground
but having it as an option for early testers that for some reason cannot
compile from source would be a great way to build momentum towards the adoption
of the technology by other programs.
I understand that this may be difficult to do as also the nepomuk pimo and
peopletag componnents would have to be package but it also means that these
componnents would be available desktopwise and contribute to an enhanced deskto
experience.

All this is available at:

2009-06-18 Thread Luis Silva
It seems to have been picked-up and fixed in the kernel. Could the devs
please cherry-pick this commit or simply rebase tho the latest 2.6.30
kernel so this bug can be closed? Here goes the commit log:

commit 1e7439388a5aa6decf76ac1d73d5312fe713e6af
Author: Jan Nikitenko
Date: Tue Jun 9 19:31:55 2009 -0300

V4L/DVB (11999): af9015: fix stack corruption bug

This patch fixes stack corruption bug present in af9015_eeprom_dump():
the buffer buf is one byte smaller than required - there is 4 chars
for address prefix, 16*3 chars for dump of 16 eeprom bytes per line
and 1 byte for zero ending the string required, i.e. 53 bytes, but
only 52 are provided.
The one byte missing in stack based buffer buf causes following oops
on MIPS little endian platform, because i2c_adap pointer in
af9015_af9013_frontend_attach() is corrupted by inlined function

[Bug 383350] [NEW] [karmic] plasma takes almost one minut to start

2009-06-03 Thread Luis Silva
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to karmic from jaunty, plasma started taking an enormous amount
of time to start. I can see akonadi notifications and even sounds from other
applications but the desktop doesn't show up for more than a minute. Stopping
plasma from konsole with:

and then launching plasma again I get something like:

I followed the suggestion of the upstream bug report.
* I created a new user and logged in (35 seconds).
* Launch konsole and stop plasma with kquitapp plasma (0seconds)
* Start plasma from the terminal (16 seconds)
* remove folderview stop and start plasma (14 seconds)
* I get nearly a 1 second improve for each plasmoid removed from the pannel
except the "device notifier" plasmoid (12s -> 4s)
* plasma with no pannels and no plasmoids takes 1s to start
* added the device notiffier to the desktop and restart plasma (9s)

[Bug 393086] [NEW] trash plasmoid should show menu on left click

2009-06-28 Thread Luis Silva
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-bin

When left clicking on the trash plasmoid the default behavior is to open
dolphin. On the other hand, right clicking on the trash shows a menu
that contains both the "Empty trash" and "Remove plasmoid" options. From
my point of view this is a usability problem since I already removed
this plasmoid several times while just wanting to empty the trash. My
suggestion is to show the trash options on a left-click menu and the
plasma options on the right-click menu.

uname -a

Also I noticed that there must have been some kind of API change betwen
2.6.28 and 2.6.30 for the dvb/dvb-usb stack because I can no longer
compile the mc44s803 tuner driver from source. It used to be trivial.

[Bug 338669] Re: (Needs UXA) painting artifacts after qt4.5 upgrade on intel chipset

2009-05-04 Thread Luis Silva
I still cannot understand. I submitted this bug against qt4.5 because,
to me, that was the most plausible candidate for the cause. How can you
say that you cannot narrow down the possible culprits?

> It's apparently upstream of KDE, even, much less Kubuntu; but it's also
> claimed by Intel to be downstream of them;
The only thing in between Intel (read Xorg) and KDE is Qt. Incidentally, of all
the factors only qt changed. So, what else do you need to locate the problem?

> I'm affected by it, and while it's a bit of a nuisance in Kate, it's not
> mission-critical.
Surely you are not having the same problem I have. Konqueror, akregator and
kmail are all STRONGLY affected by this bug. This is not "a bit of a nuisance"
in any of those apps. It completely ruins your experience. Most of the time I
can only see the bottom half of the page in konqueror.

>Wait for two weeks and live with the graphical nuisance until then. As I
>understand it, this is a very touchy bug that's been resolved in KDE
>4.3, which will have its first beta release on May 12. Kubuntu Karmic

t>here's going to be some rapid packaging going on at the time.
So, waiting for an yet unstable alpha release is the solution? How about
proposing KDE 4.2 compiled against qt4.4 (shipped by default) and package qt4.5
as an alternative with a BIG FAT WARNING? I haven't seen anything preventing
such a strategy on a release-update.

I got the exact same behavior. My complete kernel panic message is:

Kernel panic - not syncing: stack-protector: Kernel stack is corrupt in:

syslog is empty.

After a clean reboot I tried to simply load the modules dvb-usb-af9015
and af9013 and they seem to load ok. If I then plug the stick in, I get
the same kernel panic.

[Bug 235458] [NEW] resume garbles VT1 through VT6

2008-05-28 Thread Luis Silva
Public bug reported:

I am using Kubuntu 8.04 KDE3.5.9 flavour. My laptop is an Acer Aspire
1692 WMLi with a radeom mobility X600 video card (r300 based). I am
using the free drivers. When I come back from suspend to ram all my
virtual terminals are garbled. They still react to keyboard but I can't
read the text. This started happening after a clean install of 8.04.
Resume from suspend to disk does not trigger this bug.

2008-08-17 Thread Luis Silva
Hi!
I tested this on two different laptops:
acer 1692 wlmi
asus eeepc 700

They both show this behavior in Gutsy, Hardy and Intrepid.
To get some perspective I tried to compare to a usb mouse and I must
say an optical low end usb mouse reduces causes about 60 events a
second. Much better than the usual 200/300 a second I am getting with
the synaptics driver.

Does anyone know what is the behavior of other touchpad drivers?

kde 4.1 beta (packages from PPA).

2009-02-03 Thread Luis Silva
Ok! With the last jaunty I had to add pciehp.pciehp_force=1 to the kernel
options for the wireless to work with the ath5k driver. I also added the file
eee-wireless-toggle to /etc/acpi/events/ and eeepc-wireless-toggle.sh to
/etc/acpi/. Both files are attached. Also added
options rfkill default_state=0
to /etc/modprobe.d/options.
All this for the Asus eeepc 701 4G.

[Bug 321165] [NEW] Dragonplayer should inhibit suspension when playing a movie

2009-01-25 Thread Luis Silva
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dragonplayer

I configured my laptop to suspend to ram when idle for more than 20
minutes. When I play a movie or other long media with dragon player I
have to either change the power profile beforehand or touch the pad to
prevent the computer from suspending. The expected behavior is that i
wouldn't have to do anything to prevent the suspend trigger while dragon
is playing. I am using KDE4.2 RC1 with an updated kubuntu jaunty.

[Bug 321289] [NEW] [jaunty] missing wlan entry under /sys

2009-01-25 Thread Luis Silva
Public bug reported:

I recently installed the latest alpha of jaunty. Everything seems to
work fine except for the wireless card and rfkillswitch. This is a
regression with respect to 8.10. As I own an Asus eeepc 701 4G I used to
have a script sending 1 or 0 to /sys/devices/platform/eeepc/wlan to
respectively turn my wireless card on or off. In jaunty this interface
doesn't exist.

Is there any other interface that replaces it?

Using the same script but for
/sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/ASUS010\:00/rfkill/rfkill0/state
brings the card down but it is useless on up. Only a reboot brings the card up
again.

[Bug 296710] Re: warning: ehci_hcd loaded AFTER uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd

2009-01-15 Thread Luis Silva
The point in having ehci-hcd loaded before the other is that if either

[Bug 296710] Re: warning: ehci_hcd loaded AFTER uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd

2009-01-17 Thread Luis Silva
@fishor: That was the solution for me. In fact it seems that udev has
nothing to do with this. the problem is that there is no control over
what modules are loaded and when if they are in the initram.

@scot: If you only have usb 1.0 hardware then ehci-hcd will do nothing.
only when you load uhci-hcd will you have access to those deices. The
point is the ehci-hcd driver does not block the uhci-hcd controlled
devices. But the later drier acts on the USB 2.0 devices and prevents
them from working full speed, even if you load ehci afterwards.

A lot of drivers have been being compiled into the kernel lately, to the
point of the need for an initram dropping to almost nil. As a bonus i
got 4 seconds less in my boot time.

[Bug 318929] [NEW] Impossible to install akonadi-server and amarok at the same time.

2009-01-19 Thread Luis Silva
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: akonadi-server

I have akonadi-server installed which depends on mysql-server and mysql-
server-5.0. When trying to install amarok I am told that there is a
conflict and that mysql-server-5.0 must be removed to install mysql-
server-5.1. Of course, this implies removing akonadi. I propose
upgrading the akonadi dependencies to mysql-server-5.1 and deal with the
possible incompatibility issues as akonadi bugs.

Yes. Modules compile into the kernel are always initialized. You can add
these options to the kernel command line in /boot/grub/menu1st.

Check the corresponding man page on how to edit this file and don't forget to

 pciehp.pciehp_force=1 pciehp.pciehp_poll_mode=1

I have experienced this issue with any ICH chipset. The main speaker

sounds like a disco under windows. All outputs are set to 100% on amix

[Bug 396504] [NEW] parallel port drivers are loaded even if one is not present

2009-07-07 Thread Luis Silva
Public bug reported:

Using lsmod I see that there are a few drivers that are loaded even if
there is no hardware to controll. I'm mostly talking about the parallel
port drivers lp, parport and parport-pc. Is there a way to stop them
from loading. Maybe a cleanup on the way modules are selected for
loading at boot is required.

[Bug 383350] Re: [karmic] plasma takes almost one minut to start

2009-07-07 Thread Luis Silva
The problem seems to have been reduced/solved upstream but needs
testing. Could someone please include this patch into the current rc?
Otherwise we will have to wait for an rc2 orr the final release of kde
4.3. Thanks!

[Bug 325252] Re: Regression: cannot connect to WPA-PSK (TKIP encryption) wireless network with network manager plasmoid

2009-07-07 Thread Luis Silva
After a long and painfull period I decided to switch to wicd which as
been working flawlessly for me. Today I retried to install plasma-
widget-networkmanagement and the results were the same. I know solid has
a wicd backend. Why couldn't this plasmoid use it? Then again, I also
tried the gnome NetworkManager widget and it works fine which means that
the bug is on kde side and not the backend. What do the upstream devs
say about this?

[Bug 383350] Re: [karmic] plasma takes almost one minut to start

2009-07-11 Thread Luis Silva
After upgrading to kde 4.3 rc2 plasma takes much less time to start. It
is still not as fast as 4.2 but no longer a minute. Starting plasma from
a terminal now takes 9 seconds where it used to take 16 (see above).

[Bug 392593] Re: [karmic regression] cannot connect to wireless network

2009-07-16 Thread Luis Silva
I just tested plasma-widget-network-manager with a WPA-PSK network and I
can confirm that it is not working. I also noticed that there also is a
plasma-widget-networkmanagement. What is the difference between the two?
I am currently using wicd as a network manager and it seems to be a wicd
solid backend but I don't seem to be able to make it connect to any
network. Can someone put forward a few words on this?

[Bug 400375] [NEW] Kopete crashes on second start when there is a facebook account.

2009-07-16 Thread Luis Silva
Public bug reported:

This bug is easy to reproduce. After a clean install of kopete and
kopete-facebook launch kopete and create a facebook account. Test it to see if
it is working (it was for me). Exit kopete and start it again. There you go,
you get a crash!
I am using karmic alpha 2 with kde 4.3 rc2 packages. No backtraces as I don't
hae the disk space for the dbg packages.
