[Bug 371897] Re: Occasional sound drops in Wine via PulseAudio

2009-12-13 Thread Locke
Using Ventrilo with wine 1.1.34 (and prior) the mic hook would fail
after 20-45 minutes or so, cascading through Pulse to anything involving
the mic, and only after using Ventrilo. Mic seems to behave correctly
using native linux apps, indefinitely. Only after a restart would I get
mic functionality back.

Thinking this was an alsa issue, I did the only thing I figured could
help, upgrading to alsa 1.0.21, with no effect.

I attempted compiling wine from git with the winepulse patches applied.
After running, I don't get pulse, nor winecfg. Apparently I failed
somewhere during this. :)

I am now using Neil's Wine+WinePulse package (wine 1.1.31 with
winepulse 0.33) from his PPA, but with Pulse enabled in winecfg, then
going to Ventrilo's settings to test the mic, I am greeted with a "No
mixers are available" dialog. Passing that, the mic won't function at
all in Ventrilo, though it does in non-wine apps.

PulseAudio *IS* a mixer, isn't it? I'm unsure of where the problem is
coming from.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

[Bug 371897] Re: Occasional sound drops in Wine via PulseAudio

2009-12-13 Thread Locke
The wording in the first paragraph of my previous post may be
misleading. Let me try to clarify:

The mic will function as expected, indefinitely, when using native linux
apps. After a short time of using Ventrilo, the mic stops working, and
no apps (native or not) are able to use it until after I restart.

[Bug 215283] Re: rhythmbox restarts after exit

2010-06-04 Thread Locke
It's happening to me right now. The only things that have changed since
this started were mass addition of these packages (done in a one-liner,
some of which were already present)

build-essential subversion git-core checkinstall yasm texi2html libfaac-
dev libfaad-dev libmp3lame-dev libopencore-amrnb-dev libopencore-amrwb-
dev libsdl1.2-dev libtheora-dev libvorbis-dev libx11-dev libxfixes-dev
libxvidcore-dev zlib1g-dev

None of these seemingly have anything to do with my problem. (they're
all development related) I have been compiling while this problem has
been occurring.

[Bug 436981] [NEW] update-manager language unintuitive

2009-09-25 Thread Locke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Current Ubuntu Karmic, using current update-manager 0.125.4, a package
was updated which caused the software to prompt with something along the
lines of "/etc/xdg/menus/settings.menu has been updated, do you wish to
use the new version?", or something very similar. I'm working from
memory, and this is my first real bug report, so please bear with me.

>From the wording of that question, I would expect the choices to be
either "Yes", or "No".

Instead, the available choices are "Keep" and "Replace". The options do
not match the question. I believe that either the question should ask
what action the user would like to take, and have "Keep" or "replace"
choices, -OR- Keep with current wording, asking if I would like to
asking if I wanted to use the new version, and giving "Yes" or "No"
choices.

[Bug 405544] Re: Unable to burn CD or DVD with 2.6.31 kernel

2010-01-04 Thread Locke
Locke_99GS @ Ubuntuforums = Myself.

I was quite disappointed to have vested the time getting X running on
the 2.6.33 kernel (nVidia 195.30 required patching to be compatible with
2.6.33-rc1; wish I'd have known that the first time) to have the exact
same results. I never did try burning with an older kernel (older
Kubuntu install) as I just started burning with the laptop instead,
which interestingly burns just fine with the same 2.6.31 kernels from
the repo's that fail with the desktop. Laptop also runs Karmic.

I will try with the 2.6.32.2 kernel that people have reportedly had
success with. Failing that, I'll try the 2.6.33 kernel again (rc2 this
time) and 2.6.29. I'll report my findings in within the next few days.

I am glad to see that this bug has some attention.

[Bug 858208] Re: Cannot scroll feed when gwibber opens

2012-03-02 Thread Locke
I am able to reproduce this bug with Gwibber 3.2.1 in Ubuntu 11.10, and
the noted method to get scrolling working works as well. This occurs for
me 100% of the time.

I've just recently moved from Maverick, where this bug does not exist,
and GNOME2 with Gwibber 2.32.2. I am currently trying to use Unity. PC
is 64bit. Happens on my wife's computer as well, with Ubuntu 11.10,

[Bug 299149] [NEW] Weather applet Useless for me

2008-11-17 Thread Peter Locke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I must be missing something very basic. My weather applet is absolutely
worthless.
For 'City,' it says: Default location? But there isn't one, and no instructions
that I've been able to find, on how to enter a city. Or for that matter, how
to enter anything!
1) 2.24.1-0ubuntu1
2) Intrepid Ibex 8.10
3) To click on the 'weather' applet, and get weather!!!
4) What happens? I get a panel listing 13 items from 'City' to 'Sunset,'
showing 'City' as 'default.' There is no 'default' city listed, and no
information for any 'default' city. There are no instructions for entering any
city or any other kind of information, and no instructions how to make the

[Bug 154215] Re: gnome no window manager

2008-02-14 Thread Kevin Locke
How did you install Gnome? Which window managers do you have installed
(e.g. metacity)? If you try starting a window manager after logging in
(i.e. from an xterm), does it start without problems?

Do you have compiz installed? I just ran across a problem on Hardy
where gnome-wm makes bad decisions when compiz is not installed (since
compiz is its default). I have attached a patch which fixes that
problem (compiz is selected regardless of whether or not it is
installed) - but I am not sure if that is the problem you are
experiencing.

[Bug 445123] Re: No GUI option to disable face browser

2010-05-05 Thread Bruce Locke
"The issue is not only the one little checkbox in the configuration
dialog, it's that it makes easy to enable a login screen mode which has
usability issues and didn't get enough testing, if we make something
easy to do we should make sure it's working as the level of quality
required which is not the case for power users command line changes"

So organizations that need to deploy Ubuntu in anything more than a
simple standalone desktop environment must rely on a buggy login screen
that is hidden from the UI config script and the status quo will be
maintained being on the year people have bitched about it. Bravo.
Bravo.

[Bug 430074] [NEW] Kopete's "report a bug" menu item sends me to KDE's bugzilla instead of launchpad

[Bug 453518] [NEW] Creating ostringstream causes deadlock

2009-10-16 Thread David Locke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcc-4.3

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04

$ apt-cache policy libstdc++6

This is a bit tricky to provide details for but I'll do my best.

I develop a custom multi-threaded c++ trading application that I run on
a Juanty server. My application seems to be deadlocking on a line where
I create an ostringstream. This seems to be releated to
http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=40088 and the underling lock
is in std::locale::locale().

gdb reports the following when I attach to the deadlocked program:
$ gdb tradesys

For reference lines 362-364 in tradesys.cpp are:
  cout << "Main thread woke up." << endl;

[Bug 453518] Re: Creating ostringstream causes deadlock

2009-10-16 Thread David Locke
OOPS, I probably should have checked all the locked threads before
posting this. Thread 6 seems to be the critical thread because I create
an ostringstream in a signal handler that interupts another
ostringstream creation.

gdb has this to say.

[Bug 1793485] Re: segfault in png to gif conversion

2018-10-10 Thread Hajo Locke
Hello Seth,

thanks for your answer. My expectations was that flaws are fixed in code and
it's not necessary to block filetypes. Unfortunately in
hosting/webapplications/shops ImageMagick+Ghostscript are widely used in
Standardsoftware. Minutes after Updating some Servers we had reports about
failing conversions.
We use apparmor-profiles to protect our internal structure. User itself is only
able to read some needed paths and write to his own home. So this risk should
be ok for us unless there is an exploit to gain root privileges. If i
understand Tavis Ormandy's statement the right way, more flaws are highly
probable.

Thanks,
Hajo

[Bug 1793485] Re: segfault in png to gif conversion

2018-10-10 Thread Hajo Locke
Hello,

can last changelogentry assigned to one particular CVE Number?

* SECURITY UPDATE: code execution vulnerabilities in ghostscript as
invoked by imagemagick
- debian/patches/200-disable-ghostscript-formats.patch: disable
ghostscript handled types by default in policy.xml

We have reports of users who cant convert pdf-files any more, because
policy.xml is forbidding it.
Which risk will we take if we change policy.xml back to former content?

And i think there is a typo in changelog. filename is 300-disable-
ghostscript-formats.patch

[Bug 1759452] [NEW] KDE won't display after updating

2018-03-27 Thread David Locke
Public bug reported:

I'm running a 16.04 KUbuntu guest on a Windows 10 host. Today I updated
the virtualbox guest packages and now KDE doesn't display (only a black
screen).

If I SSH into the machine using Putty and Xming I can run xcalc but
trying to run kate generates the message: "failed to get the current
screen resources". There is also an error related to loading virtualbox
in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

[Bug 1909580] [NEW] adcli not updating keytabs since 0.8.2-1ubuntu1

2020-12-29 Thread Hajo Locke
Public bug reported:

Hello,

i use a typical setup with sssd/realmd to integrate some of my machines into MS
Active Directory.
sssd triggers adcli to update machine password in Active Directory.

On 2020-12-02 my systems updated adcli from 0.8.2-1 to 0.8.2-1ubuntu1,
since that date no keytab renewal is possible.

I downgraded adcli package and it worked again, which avoids danger of
being thrown out of AD.

This is a succesful adcli output, the arguments are captured directly
from sssd:

adcli update --domain=mydomain.de --host-fqdn=Hostname
--computer-password-lifetime=30 --domain-controller=mydc.mydomain.de --verbose
 * Found realm in keytab: mydomain.de
 * Found computer name in keytab: Hostname

 * Cleared old entries from keytab: FILE:/etc/krb5.keytab
 * Added the entries to the keytab: HTTP/hostname.mydomain...@mydomain.de:
FILE:/etc/krb5.keytab

And this is the unsuccesful output of adcli 0.8.2-1ubuntu1

adcli update --domain=mydomain.de --host-fqdn=Hostname
--computer-password-lifetime=30 --domain-controller=mydc.mydomain.de --verbose
 * Found realm in keytab: mydomain.de

 * Using domain realm: mydomain.de
 * Sending netlogon pings to domain controller: cldap://xx.xx.xx.xx
 * Received NetLogon info from: mydc.mydomain.de
 * Wrote out krb5.conf snippet to
/tmp/adcli-krb5-q8rbQD/krb5.d/adcli-krb5-conf-ZzzByW
 * Authenticated as default/reset computer account: Hostname

 * Generated 120 character computer password
 * Using keytab: FILE:/etc/krb5.keytab
! Couldn't lookup computer account: Hostname$: Can't contact LDAP server
adcli: updating membership with domain mydomain.de failed: Couldn't lookup
computer account: Hostname$: Can't contact LDAP server

So whats wrong here? I think there is no real problem of contacting
DomainController. May be adcli needs some more Arguments, but adcli is
triggered directly by sssd.

Thanks for your help,
Hajo

[Bug 1851062] Re: Qemu using CPU even when the VM is paused

2020-06-25 Thread Kevin Locke
I re-opened the discussion that @Christian found on the kvm mailing list
and Paolo Bonzini helped identify a fix: enabling the Hyper-V hv_stimer
enlightenment.

Although it may not fix the issue for guests which don't support that
enlightenment, it works well for my Windows 10 guest, which now has
negligible CPU usage when paused.

I've also opened https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1851244 to discuss
improving the virt-manager/virt-install defaults for Windows guests.

[Bug 1851062] Re: Qemu using CPU even when the VM is paused

2020-06-26 Thread Kevin Locke
I agree that QEMU shouldn't use much CPU when paused, regardless of VM
settings. For reference, I narrowed down a (more) minimal test case:

Using the Windows 10 May 2020 English 64-bit ISO from
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

qemu-system-x86_64 \
-no-user-config \
-machine pc-q35-5.0,accel=kvm \
-m 1024 \
-blockdev
driver=file,node-name=win10iso,filename=Win10_2004_English_x64.iso \
-device ide-cd,drive=win10iso \
-no-hpet \
-rtc driftfix=slew

then pause the VM after the "Windows Setup" window appears, qemu-system-
x86_64 uses ~40% CPU. Without -rtc driftfix=slew, ~10%. Without -no-
hpet, ~1%.

I added it to the ML discussion this morning to see if there was
interest in fixing the issue, but so far no takers:

[Bug 1210748] Re: On Lenovo Thinkpad Twist internal mouse does not work after turning on machine, only works after reboot

2020-06-01 Thread Kevin Locke
I encountered the same issue and was able to solve it by adding
i8042.reset=1 to the kernel command line. i8042.nomux was not necessary
for me.

The quirk was committed in
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=2712c91a54a1058d55c284152b4d93c979b67be6
which is included in Linux 5.7. It has also been merged into stable for
the upcoming v5.6.16, v5.4.44, v4.19.126, v4.14.183, v4.9.226, and
v4.4.226.

[Bug 1851062] Re: Qemu using CPU even when the VM is paused

2020-06-24 Thread Kevin Locke
I just ran into what I think is the same issue. Windows 10 VM
controlled from virt-manager using ~30% CPU while paused.

I'm attaching the output of
pidstat -p $(pidof qemu-system-x86_64) -T ALL -rtuw 5 5
and the first thousand lines of
strace -rT -ff -f -o paused-but-busy -p $(pidof qemu-system-x86_64)
that you requested from the other reporter. As a non-expert, the repeated
calls to ioctl(10, KVM_IRQ_LINE_STATUS, ...)+ppoll() timeout seem suggestive to
me.

Note: I'm omitting strace for all threads except the one consuming the
CPU, since they each contain a single futex() call. If you'd like to
see the futex addr/val, let me know.

Thanks for investigating,
Kevin

Full disclosure: I'm using Debian rather than Ubuntu. If you'd like me
to repro using the Ubuntu package versions (or on a fully Ubuntu system)
I can give it a shot. Currently using qemu-system-x86 1:5.0-5, libvirt
6.0.0-6, and virt-manager 1:2.2.1-4.

[Bug 1807722] [NEW] ImageMagick without rsvg Support

2018-12-10 Thread Hajo Locke
Public bug reported:

Hello,

imagemagick 8:6.9.7.4+dfsg-16ubuntu6.4 which is bundled with Ubuntu 18.04.1
LTS/bionic is explicitely compiled with --without-rsvg
This disables rsvg support and forces fallback to msvg renderer which is
rudimentary functionrange.
Why this?
In Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS/xenial rsvg support is still active.

[Bug 1772671] [NEW] Kernel produces empty lines in /proc/PID/status

2018-05-22 Thread Hajo Locke
Public bug reported:

Hello,

after running updates today to linux-
image-4.4.0-127-generic_4.4.0-127.153 and rebooting i noticed that iotop
is not working any more. Reason are empty lines in /proc/PID/status,
which confuse iotop (and me)

In new view there is an empy line between Seccomp and
Speculation_Store_Bypass:

Seccomp:0

Speculation_Store_Bypass: vulnerable

Speculation_Store_Bypass seems to be new in /proc/PID/status, may be a relation
to spectre/meltdown patches.

iotop is first application which is failing here, but iam afraid of
more.

Thanks

yes, i can fix this in iotop, but i thin the main problem is kernel and
there should not exist an empty line under /proc/PID/status

[Bug 1772671] Re: Kernel produces empty lines in /proc/PID/status

2018-05-22 Thread Hajo Locke
Hello,

i installed v4.17-rc6 and this problem seems fixed, no emtpy line in
/proc/PID/status, but i also miss the line Speculation_Store_Bypass which was
existing in 4.4.0-127-generic #153-Ubuntu
So may be this is fixed because meltdown/spectre patches are not applied? Iam
not sure, so i hesitate to set tag kernel-fixed-upstream.
What do you think?

For information: I could not install linux-
headers-4.17.0-041700rc6-generic, there is a dependency to libssl1.1
which is not available currently for xenial.

Thanks

Public bug reported:

problem occurs on Ubuntu Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS

let me show the U14 problem:

difference is initscript in line 126, the end of the status() function.

[Bug 1655842] Re: "Out of memory" errors after upgrade to 4.4.0-59

2017-02-07 Thread Hajo Locke
When this new kernel will be released? This bug is killing our MySQL
Servers. Booting old kernels is only a bad workaround. I think a lot of
people with busy servers will have a problem.

This is 2.nd time we were hit by a big bug within short time. In oct 2016 our
nameservers got problems because of bug 1634892
Is LTS-Ubuntu still right system for servers?

[Bug 1652903] [NEW] No libsphinxclient Package in xenial

2016-12-28 Thread Hajo Locke
Public bug reported:

Currently there is no libsphinxclient Package in xenial. This Package is needed
to compile further Clientapplications for Sphinxsearch.
The Package sphinxsearch-2.2.9 in xenial only produces the sphinxsearch deb.

for comparison: In trusty the sphinxsearch sourcepackage was creating 5
deb Packages, among these packages were the needed libsphinxclient and
libsphinxclient-dev

Somebody remove this packages from sourcepackage in xenial and currently
there is no replacment.

** Affects: sphinxsearch (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1498832] Re: invalid file (bad magic number): Exec format error

2017-03-03 Thread Kevin Locke
I just ran into this issue with a self-compiled jar file and confirmed
that I have the same issue with ditaa on Debian. Checking the
binfmt_misc configuration may be useful. To see what interpreters will
be tried by binfmt_misc, run `/usr/sbin/update-binfmts --find
/usr/bin/ditaa`. Then try running the interpreter with the jar file
directly (e.g. `/usr/bin/jarwrapper /usr/bin/ditaa`) to see if it works.

If update-binfmts does not print anything, that suggests either
corruption of the JAR file (check `od -An -tx1 -N4
/usr/share/ditaa/ditaa.jar` is `50 4b 03 04`) or that jarwrapper is not
correctly registered (check `/usr/sbin/update-binfmts --display
jarwrapper` prints `jarwrapper (enabled)`).

If update-binfmts prints `/usr/bin/jexec` (or anything else) in addition
to `jarwrapper` and those interpreters do not work, this suggests
conflicting binfmt_misc registrations. Check the output of `/usr/sbin
/update-binfmts --display` to find out which package installed it. You
can then remove it by running something like `sudo update-binfmts
--package openjdk-8 --remove jar /usr/bin/jexec`.

The issue, as it appeared on my system, was that the openjdk packages
(e.g. openjdk-8-jre-headless) install /usr/bin/jexec as a binfmt_misc
handler but jexec doesn't work with this jar. Java version mismatch
perhaps? I found the issue of jexec/jarwrapper conflict has been raised
before at https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=136993#82
without response. Perhaps it's time to raise it again? I'd reassign
this bug to openjdk-8-jre-headless.
