I encountered the same issue and was able to solve it by adding i8042.reset=1 to the kernel command line. i8042.nomux was not necessary for me.
The quirk was committed in https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=2712c91a54a1058d55c284152b4d93c979b67be6 which is included in Linux 5.7.
