How did you install Gnome? Which window managers do you have installed (e.g. metacity)? If you try starting a window manager after logging in (i.e. from an xterm), does it start without problems?
Do you have compiz installed? I just ran across a problem on Hardy where gnome-wm makes bad decisions when compiz is not installed (since compiz is its default).
