[Bug 381935] [NEW] Firefox-3.0 intermittently drops keyboard input from flash

2009-05-30 Thread Dan Lawson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Package Version: 3.0.8+nobinonly-0ubuntu3
Dist Version: 9.04

When playing a game in Firefox-3.0 (Version), keyboard input to flash player
will be intermittently dropped. For example, in the game Platform Racer 2, at:

http://www.kongregate.com/games/Jiggmin/platform-racing-2

If you press and hold the down arrow, your character should charge a
high jump, until you let go. You should be able to hold the down arrow
for a minute without jumping. As it is now, after a couple of seconds,
you will 'let go' and your character will jump (aka the flash player
stopped getting the down arrow keypress). This can make for some very
jittery gameplay.

This only started occurring after I upgraded to 9.04. I've tested with
an upgraded 64-bit install, and a fresh 32-bit install.

The issue does not happen with Opera using the same flash plugin.

Also, this is not a duplicate of:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/243856

but may be related to something that was done to fix that bug.

[Bug 357901] Re: xinerama mouse cursor on every screen

2009-05-05 Thread Andrew Lawson
I have the same issue here with three monitors, all separate X screens
with xinerama on and twinview off. I have two nvidia 7300 GTs in this
box. The problem occurs quite often, several times an hour and may
disappear immediately or hang around for a minute or two, I can't seem
to work out what makes it sort itself. The SWCursor fix causes severe
trails that make one of the monitors unusable.

[Bug 287693] [NEW] nm-applet doesn't display if wireless connection in /etc/network/interfaces

2008-10-22 Thread Dan Lawson
Public bug reported:

[Bug 64814] Re: apt wants to auto-remove all my system!!!

2007-05-25 Thread Nick Lawson
This has happened numerous times on this system.

Needless to say I've had to reinstall. It screwed up the system a
couple times already.I do something like 'hmm, I don't have a sound
card so I don't need amarok' and so I apt-get remove amarok and it
erases kubuntu desktop, everything. It seems to be triggered anytime I
remove anything that comes with the kubuntu-desktop package. Maybe the
system doesn't realise that kubuntu desktop is needed by other packages
or something (I dont know how the packages work, tbh).

In one case it even removed my network connectivity stuff and I couldn't
even apt-get to fix it because apt-get update failed (no connectivity).

Somehow, it thinks that nothing is referencing kubuntu desktop if you
remove any component of it.

[Bug 64814] Re: apt wants to auto-remove all my system!!!

2007-05-25 Thread Nick Lawson
I just gave this a test.

I installed kubuntu-desktop: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

I waited until it was all done

I removed amarok:

sudo apt-get remove amarok.

It offered to remove kubuntu-desktop for me. I told it 'uh, ok' and boom, all
gone.
Its not even listed under 'atuomatically installed'. It says
"The following packages will be REMOVED:" and lists kubuntu-desktop under
there! This is after already deleting the extended_states file as mentioned
here.

Thank goodness that this time I had ubuntu desktop installed as a
backup...

That's what I thought too - and it was true the first few times. Like,
it'd say its removing kubuntu desktop but it'd be all fine. So then I
removed kaffiene and keb too, and each time it listed more and more
packages as being removed. I guess once kubuntu-desktop has been
removed, it believes that all the packages inside kubuntu-desktop are no
longer necessary. So each time if I remove 2 or 3 things like kaffiene
and keb it will uninstall the entirety of KDE.

This is on the latest feisty btw. And I tested it via the 'add or
remove programs' graphical UI and it had the same result. In other
words I can screw up this system (recoverably, if you're not a newbie
user, but I dont like to make that assumption) just by removing things
like keb and amarok via the 'add or remove programs' gui.

[Bug 44146] Re: ksystemlog crashes

2007-04-13 Thread Nick Lawson
This is happening to me too, in latest feisty.

I can reproduce it here every time - all I need to do is change the type
of logs being viewed to anything except the kernel log, then change it
back to kernel log. If I do this once it tends to happen most of the
time. if I change to EVERY different type of view before coming back to
the kernel log, it will ALWAYS crash while populating the kernel log
view.

Note that there are two different outputs below.

I could paste more, but it seems to crash in a different place every
time.

[Bug 115081] path text doen't fit in widget in the 'receiving email' config dialog

2007-05-16 Thread Nick Lawson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Version: Feisty using up-to-date packages and a pretty basic install.
tested with all themes including the human themes. I will attach PNGs of the
issue.

Basically, if you're creating a new mbox, maildir, or other type of
folder or file based receiving type of server, the dialog that shows
your current selection does not give enough space in the widget for the
text to appear (see screenshots).

1. Open evolution and configure one of your server accounts
2. in Recieving Email subfolder, choose maildir format
--> The text inside the folder/file chooser does not fit, I don't know what its
supposed to say. This combined with the folder select bug was causing a lot
of confusion.

[Bug 209338] [NEW] [Hardy] Move To Trash broken with new gnome-vfs

2008-03-30 Thread Nick Lawson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: baobab

(Hardy Beta patched up to date as of writing this bug)

In the folder/file list, Right-click Move to Trash
Disk Usage Analyzer moves the file to ~/.Trash instead of
~/.local/share/Trash/files, (or just trash:/// ) so nothing shows up in the
gnome-vfs trash applet, etc.

Those files moved in that way will essentially sit there until the user
manually deletes them out of ~/.Trash, and will not show up in the
nautilus trash folder or the trash applet etc.

[Bug 209338] Re: [Hardy] Move To Trash broken with new gnome-vfs

2008-04-04 Thread Nick Lawson
Possibly. I was under the impression that each individual app that used
to move things to trash needs to have gnome-vfs support to work properly
now (ie, there is no universal fix). I could be wrong.

If it's indeed the case that individual apps needs upgrades, it means
bug #208277 would be because of any random app that hasn't got the vfs
support yet.

However, the 'symptoms' of this bug are different from whats described
there... to be more specific the system-wide trashcan shows up as empty,
and opening up the trash can using the trash applet (or vfs link) shows
nothing there. (Becuase the files were moved to a different folder
which the trash can applet is not watching).

Basically, if the user is not knowlegable enough to know that its moving
the files to ~/.trash, it will appear to them as if the files are being
erased, but they will gain no disk space. The trashcan itself won't
actually show up as full or needing emptying

[Bug 110128] mountconfig crashes while 'scanning' for windows shares

2007-04-25 Thread Nick Lawson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings

up-to-date Feisty install, no special packages, etc.
Kubuntu-Desktop installed.
This runs in a VMWare.

To reproduce this bug every time I simply
1. Open the system settings or kcontrol app
2. Go to the mountconfig pane
3. Enter admin mode
4. create a new entry by clicking new
5. change the type to 'windows file shareing'
6. Click the 'scan' button which appears
--> A scan dialog appears for a second or two, then the entire thing crashes :(
--> ALSO, if I fill the information in manually instead of scanning, clicking
'add' does nothing. no feedback, no new entry, no error box.

Note that I can properly mount samba drives and can use konqueror to
navigate the various machines on the network manually, or by using
konqueror browser and fstab so on, but if I didn't know about that stuff
I'd be lost when it came to mounting the FS (ie as an everyday user)

Note that also even if I fill the information in manually, clicking the
'add' button does nothing at all. this is probably related (?).

[Bug 119315] Re: [gutsy] udevd hogs the processor and spams /var/log/messages

2007-06-29 Thread Dan Lawson

I have the same from Feisty, with a custom built 2.6.21.5 kernel. Most
of the .config options were defaults, with the exception of processor
type (Set to Pentium M), and display adapters (enabled VESA).

[Bug 103018] ksysguard applet displays become unusable if they ever become blank

2007-04-04 Thread Nick Lawson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

Version: Latest Feisty Beta, updated just before making sure its
reproducable to post this bug.

Environment: kubuntu-desktop under VMWare (So, no crazy compiz or
compositor or anything like that)

1. Add the System Guard applet to the KDE panel
2. Right click on the system guard settings (not the individual display
settings, but the settings for the applet itself) and add additional displays
--> The displays appear blank. This is fine. The problem is, there is nowhere
obvious to click to fill them back up with information. In fact, there doesn't
appear to be any way at all to fill them with data.

Any clicks you make on the blank panels appear to go through them to the
underlying KDE bar instead of allowing you to configure that display.

This problem is made worse if a user accidentally alters the original 2
panels (CPU and Mem or whatever) or reduces the number of panels,
causing them to blank out because it can never be restored.

Clicking on the border / all over the empty panel does nothing.
It remembers this blankness everytime you remove the applet and add it again,
so it appears it is forever unusable from that moment on.

 Status: Unconfirmed

attached image: Blank panels in the KDE bar are from ksysguard applet.
There is no apparent way to get them to revert because clicking on the
empty space in the panel goes through to the bar behind instead of that
display.

[Bug 373367] Re: Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head

2010-05-05 Thread Nick Lawson
I have written a qt tray-icon based background app that basically keeps
the mouse in the screen by polling for when its gone out of the screen,
but this is a very suboptimal solution since it has to poll many times a
second and eat cpu. It sometimes reaches 1% cpu even! And X is still
getting the events, so it kind of bounces at the edges, not a great
solution (but better than nothing).

A proper solution would be to somehow get the driver or the X system
involved, because we'd want to intercept these pointer events before
they reach X or at least before it sends them on to client applications.
If someone has information on where to start looking if I wanted to mess
around with this at a higher level (X or driver or something) please let
me know - I have the means, but I'm kind of lost in the architecture
here. There are so many interacting subsystems...

[Bug 576496] Re: Lost ata interrupt, usb hid (mouse keyboard) freezes

2010-05-29 Thread Nick Lawson
This problem affects me too. However, its different, it only affects
USB devices on the same IRQ as the SATA_NV driver:

 23: 786792 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi ohci_hcd:usb2, sata_nv

In my case, that OHCI_HCD (usb hub) is actually an external hub built
into my monitor. Once I moved my mouse and keyboard away from that hub,
they were no longer affected by this issue. (However, I still get the
issue, and the computer freezes up while its doing the soft reset).

It seems pretty random, and I scanned for bad blocks on the HDD
(badblocks) and found none.

The other thing different is that for me it didn't completely freeze the
mouse, but it did lower the sample rate to like 2hz, so the mouse moved
very slowly (and typing was very delayed).

[Bug 1801386] [NEW] nm-openconnect doesn't allow custom routes without a gateway

2018-11-02 Thread David Lawson
Public bug reported:

The OpenConnect VPN configuration page allows you to define manual
routes rather than using pushed routes from the VPN server, however if
you don't set a gateway for the route you can't apply the configuration.
This should be a completely valid configuration, the route should be set
up to route out the VPN interface (vpn0 typically) and routed
automatically after going out that interface.

You can replicate this by setting up an openconnect VPN connection,
turning off automatic route propagation and filling in the network and
netmask in the route table, the apply button will be grayed out and the
gateway field will be bordered in red until you fill the gateway field
in.

[Bug 1701068] Re: motd.ubuntu.com currently shows media item (HBO's Silicon Valley using Ubuntu)

2017-06-29 Thread M. Lawson
While I agree this shouldn't be seen as some sort of conspiracy, there
are a few things I want to comment on:

1) This shouldn't happen in the first place. ubuntu.com is not ad
supported, and neither should the OS. Canonical makes its money through
support services and should not need the ad revenue. If for some reason
they do, a formal statement needs to be released

2) This is kind of sneaky to put in to the motd

3) Regardless of where it's coming from, ubuntu.com is the domain.
That's where the onus lay.

[Bug 1902960] [NEW] Upgrade from 245.4-4ubuntu3.3 to 245.4-4ubuntu3.2 appears to break DNS resolution in some cases

2020-11-04 Thread David Lawson
Public bug reported:

The systemd upgrade 245.4-4ubuntu3.3 to 245.4-4ubuntu3.2 appears to have
broken DNS resolution across much of our Azure fleet earlier today. We
ended up mitigating this by forcing reboots on the associated instances,
no combination of networkctl reload, reconfigure, systemctl daemon-
reexec, systemctl daemon-reload, netplan generate, netplan apply would
get resolvectl to have a DNS server again. The main symptom appears to
have been systemd-networkd believing it wasn't managing the eth0
interfaces:

ubuntu@machine-1:~$ sudo networkctl

IDX LINK TYPE OPERATIONAL SETUP

  1 lo loopback carrier unmanaged

  2 eth0 etherroutableunmanaged

   2 links listed.

Which eventually made them lose their DNS resolvers:

ubuntu@machine-1:~$ sudo resolvectl dns
Global:
Link 2 (eth0):

After rebooting, we see this behaving properly:

ubuntu@machine-1:~$ sudo networkctl list
IDX LINK TYPE OPERATIONAL SETUP
  1 lo loopback carrier unmanaged
  2 eth0 etherroutableconfigured

2 links listed.
ubuntu@machine-1:~$ sudo resolvectl dns
Global:
Link 2 (eth0): 168.63.129.16

This appears to be specifically linked to the upgrade, i.e. we were able to
provoke the issue by upgrading the systemd package, so I suspect it's part of
the packaging in the upgrade process.

** Description changed:

As part of a larger scale plan to manage traffic to the main archive
servers it would be useful if apt could provide a facility for us to
identify interactive vs. non-interactive traffic on the server side,
ideally via a header of some kind.

As part of a broad plan to improve our ability to manage traffic to the

several hours, the next day for unattended-upgrades runs, etc.

I've replicated this on the mainline kernel, though the stack trace is
slightly different. I imagine that's to be expected.

[Bug 973953] Re: euca-describe-instance returns error VolumeNotFound

2012-04-09 Thread David Lawson
It was fixed by James nuking the volumes from orbit from within a
database shell, it still needs to be investigated and fixed in the code.
I'll redact and upload logs.

[Bug 973953] Re: euca-describe-instance returns error VolumeNotFound

2012-04-09 Thread David Lawson
So, I can provide a nova-compute.log from a random compute node, but I'd
imagine the problem is actually on the API/manager node. Can you give
us a little more direction about where to look/snag logs from? I don't
see a nova-volume.log anywhere.

[Bug 953687] Re: gnome-control-center display doesn't detect VirtualBox display resolutions

2012-04-04 Thread David Lawson
I run a script when I log in that adds the resolution, then select it
via the display manager. There's an equivalent to add the 1680x1050
resolution for the other display, though that one seems to stick around
at least until the next kernel update once its added.

#!/bin/bash
xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00" 172.80 1920 2040 2248 2576 1080 1081 1084

[Bug 953687] [NEW] gnome-control-center display doesn't detect VirtualBox display resolutions

2012-03-12 Thread David Lawson
Public bug reported:

The displays panel of g-c-c fails to properly detect the display
resolutions of VirtualBox virtual displays. I can manually add a mode
for the proper resolution, refresh, etc. and select that, but the
display panel offers a set of what appear to be completely resolutions.
It seems to know there's more than 1024x768 there, but is having trouble
getting a handle on what. I'm sure there's all kinds of fascinating
debug output that would make this easier to diagnose, let me know what
you need.

[Bug 927662] Re: Mouse cursor traversal between displays is too "sticky"

Has this behavior changed in unity 5.6? The version I'm running

there's an actual fix or whether it's a quirk of my current (new)

[Bug 955470] [NEW] unity "loses" second monitor returning from screen saver

2012-03-14 Thread David Lawson
Public bug reported:

Unlocking my machine from screen saver/power save, my second display had
disappeared. It showed the global menu bar, with the name of the
currently focused application on the main desktop, but none of the
applications that had been running on that display were visible, nor did
it have a desktop background. Oddly, if I took a screenshot, the
applications and background show up in the screenshot. Opening display
preferences and mirroring the displays did not change this, the second
display continued to show a black background and nothing but a menu bar,
however reverting to the previous configuration rather than keeping the
mirrored configuration fixed the problem.

[Bug 957402] [NEW] libghc-filestore-data dependency not installed

2012-03-16 Thread Matthew Lawson
Public bug reported:

Installing the amd64 version of the gitit package on Ubuntu 12.04 (Beta
1) no longer seems to pull in libghc-filestore-data as a dependency. The
program then complains of a missing file (found in libghc-filestore-
data) when run to create a repository:

$ gitit
gitit: /usr/share/filestore-0.4.0.4/extra/post-update: openBinaryFile: does not
exist (No such file or directory)

Installing the libghc-filestore-data package manually resolves the
issue: gitit creates a repository and starts as normal.

[Bug 1413388] Re: [SRU] upgrade of MAAS removes local config for bind and breaks DNS

2015-08-17 Thread David Lawson
When upgrading from 1.5 to 1.7.6+bzr3376-0ubuntu2~14.04.1 using maas-
region-controller-min it's not clear when we should be running "maas-
region-admin edit_named_options --migrate-conflicting-options", should
this be prior to the upgrade? As it was, I had to edit
named.conf.options and remove the forwarders option manually, then
reload rndc, running the migrate-conflicting-options command post-
upgrade resulted in rndc failing to reload because forwarders was
defined in multiple places.

2012-05-19 Thread Bhil Lawson
I have a Packard Bell dot s f3711 and am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I
encountered the same problem but could solve it by adding "reboot=e" to
the kernel command line. So do:

- edit file /etc/default/grub as root (sudo gedit /etc/default/grub)
- add reboot=e to the entry GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
- save file and exit editor
- run update-grub as root (sudo update-grub)
- please note the problem won't disappear before the 2nd reboot

"reboot=e" tells the kernel to use an EFI function for reboot instead of
the default keyboard controller mechanism.

Cheers, Bhil

[Bug 997664] [NEW] This package is unusable.

2012-05-10 Thread Dougie Lawson
Public bug reported:

The current version was built before Twitter changed from Basic Auth to
Oauth. So it is 100% unusable.

You need to update it to the latest code base: python-twitter-0.8.2.
which includes all of the Oauth2 stuff.

Even the simplest python script:

import twitter
import ConfigParser

if __name__ == '__main__':
conf = ConfigParser.ConfigParser()
conf.read("/etc/twitter-proxy/twitter.ini")
api = twitter.Api(
consumer_key=conf.get("twitter","CONSUMER_KEY"),
consumer_secret=conf.get("twitter","CONSUMER_SECRET"),
access_token_key=conf.get("twitter","TOKEN"),
access_token_secret=conf.get("twitter","TOKEN_SECRET")
)
print api.VerifyCredentials()

fails to run.

** Affects: python-twitter (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
